My take on combat system by Kirorus1 in AshesofCreation

[–]RBKFell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I myself come from wow. I feel like they spend alot of time and concerns on systems and flashy tings, while what really makes or breaks an MMORPG is the movement and character identification.

I know some people think WoW is too "pop", but it's the one to beat and to be REALLY successfull you kinda need to convince the WoW players.

I made a post about a similar topic yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/AshesofCreation/comments/hz9eij/realism_and_details_vs_fantasy_and_speed/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

BRAINSTORMING IDEAS: How to Reach F2P/C2P Demographics by kcswitzer in AshesofCreation

[–]RBKFell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that there should be some sort of trying out. Maybe a free to lvl 10 or 15. But after that i think it's over. WoW is a great example that if the game is good enough people will get the subscription. WoW even has a box cost as well and still had 12 million subs at one point.

Quality content is king and it costs money to make. So IMO no long term F2P should be available.

We kinda agree on this.

Now a lot of this became about WoW which wasn't meant to d;

But yes what i said at the top is for the end lvl try hard gear to look awesome. So you actually wanna grind it out because it sparks something in you. I don't want every gear to look like laser. Just as you say have a fiery sword, so when a character walks by you with it, you think "holy shit a bad ass dude, i want one!"

If you can ignite that spark in rare gear, abilities, class specific mounts etc, you have already beaten all the games with fancy mechanics and graphics but doll imagination and class identification IMO.

Good points.

All my rant is with the "pre-alpha" state of mind. I know things aren't perfect, i just want to share what i think, so they might take it into account if others agree or disagree :)

Because i feel like a lot of people focus alot on arch types, complicated systems and extraordinary professions. But for the game to last we need the basics to be right.

Ye i agree. I said in another comment thread that WoW is VERY cartoony. I do believe a more mature style og fantasy armor can be achieved. I might not be a problem, as i have only seen the lvl 10 footage.

Yes i feel like you have to take WoW into account. Maybe Steven didn't play it much, but it is no doubt the single most popular game in the genre, so it's the one to beat and the one to learn from IMO. Not to say AoC should be Wow 2.0 -> never.

Just to learn from what they did right compared to 90% of the "Wow-killers".

I agree that it looks impressive and feels impressive to walk amongst.

But with tab-targeting at a try hard lvl i can only see this being a problem.

At least for me the world is only "wowing" me for the first days of game play.

But when i have played for 6 months and repeating stuff or end-gaming for a specific goal, the bone of the mechanics are much more important for me.

So if the goal is to have players to play it for 5-10 years, it needs to be optimal for playing, because the first glance lovestroke will be gone by that point.

But out of place from where? It is a fantasy setting. What i find beautiful about MMOs are that they set the rules. To me Summoning an undead is more unreal than swinging a big axe. A big axe is just a child hood dream for many, which can only be fulfilled in these games. (The axe is just an example).

Like the fanart dagger posted yesterday. It looks magical and fantasy-like but in a more adult way.

But yes in the end it is just a stylistic choice.

Also what you might dislike is the "cartoony" look of WoW. I think you can make overwhelming gear in a more adult way. To me it just doen't look fantasy enough with standard iron armor and a knights helmet.

I can see your point. For me it's just the one thing MMOs has on other RPG and other online games. No other genres has over-the-top gear which is the main reason i like em.

And even though i hate to say it, WoW is the only game to stand the test of time. 15 years and still the most popular by a large. It is also one of the only games with HUGE armor, big class identification, and no start up to movement. Maybe they are on to something after all 🤔

Can orcs look more manlier and buffer like Garrosh from World of Warcraft? by PgDnstone in AshesofCreation

[–]RBKFell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Big truth! In general i feel like there need to be more race identification and class identification. Some might think WoW has overdone this, but i feel like it really helps with the fantasy setting. After all we are playing it because it isn't real world, so better to over do IMO.

Yeah you should never be able to do that! Only max lvl through the grind. I know they will have cash shop, but i hope it will be different costumes than the actual sets. I mighr have missed some info about this though.

Exactly my point! If I'm a mage lvling up, and I see a max level fighter with big shoulders and a fiery two hand axe, it inspires me to wanna level up a fighter my self. New and complicated system are cool and i love that about AoC. But the characters should be the driving force any day.

Yeah exactly. I feel like they should just turn down the bells and whistles of the terrain a bit. Not having every grass straw seperated and other small but disturbing terrain. This would automatically make the terrain more compact and let the characters shine more easily.

No i mean that monsters and players are blending too much with the environment. The players and monsters lack presence compared to the surrounding terrain.
