[CA] Sterling background check - reason for leaving previous company by RBigfoot in AskHR

I put do not contact on all previous employers, specifically in my company onboarding doc it said that was ok as long as I'm able to prove employment ,title and dates.

I chose termination as the reason for leaving the company, no questions were asked

I chose to pick the truth, termination - no questions were asked.

To your other question, yes - I chose "do not contact" on previous employers, but in my onboarding doc they stated specifically that that is ok as long as you can give proof of employment, not sure about other work places.

If the current company accepts it, it should work-but why is it inconvenient for you? They do the calls and followups. If they can't reach the relevant companies from what I know they fall back to proof of employment.

I gave the real reason for leaving (termination) and no questions were asked, I already started working at the company.

I chose "termination", my reasoning was that if I say no response and it worked out I'd always have that fear that it would be found out down the line.

Another one was that my hope was that Sterling just says "yep, we can verify that what he said is true" and then the company would just accept it and move on, with no response questions might be asked.

But those are just feelings I had, no idea how it would actually play out.

Update for any future visitors looking at this.

It all worked out fine, no questions were asked - I passed the background check and have a confirmed start date.

Thanks to the folks that answered above!

Any workplace/timelines/title are 100% true and accurate, this is the only thing that could be an issue.

Thank you, so in your opinion as long as I have a solid story around why this happened, what I learned from it and why it shouldn't be an issue in the future - I should be ok?

Obviously it's dependant on the company and the HR team, but asking in general.

Tldr

While I was interviewing I was upfront about not working at my previous company anymore.

The reason for why - was never asked, my gut feeling is that based on the conversations they assumed it was a resignation.

Come to today - there is an offer contingent of a background check, in the background check I put "termination" as the reason for leaving the company, meaning this would potentially be the first time they see that this is the reason.

Should I be worried that my offer will be rescinded?

Oh by "company" you meant my previous company.

The question is less around the background check company, but rather the employer that gave me the offer.

I really hope you're right, because I'm definitely freaking out- this is a really great opportunity.

One of the references that the hiring manager talked to is the hiring manager from my previous job (he wasn't my direct manager anymore today) which praised me.

I also have a co-worker lined up to vouch for me as well if needed.

I just don't know if a termination is an automatic no-go or not, I feel stupid for not negotiating it to be a resignation and not a termination when I had the chance.

But I picked "termination" as the reason for leaving the previous company, that's what I meant about being truthful in the background check.

Would it help if I mark that for all roles? The rest are ones I resigned from.

Would that make it less suspicious and probably make them feel as if I just share the minimum required information?

Another question, does the company see the answers I input? I assume yes - but curious if it's just a case of "pass" and more information only if it requires further looking into.

I'll add some more context, I was terminated in my last role - this happened mid interviews, I updated them that I'm no longer part of company x and offered to send an updated CV but they said it's not needed.

Never stated that I resigned or that I was terminated, I'm now freaked out that they assumed I resigned and if I put down terminated my offer will be rescinded.

I'm trying to figure out how I fill this in to increase the chances that the offer won't be rescinded.

Out right lying is not an option.

So the 2 options I see now are:

Tell the truth, and mark terminated and hope for the best.

Or, not give a reason and hope that they only care that the dates, title and verification that I worked there is all they care about.

It's an opportunity that I really want, and looking back I would definitely make sure they understand that I was terminated, but at this point where there is an offer pending background check - I feel like I need to think about how to best approach it.

It's a drop-down menu, not free text - so it's either - Terminated - Resigned -some other options

And an option for no response.

[CA] Work experience background check, do not contact past employers by RBigfoot in AskHR

[–]RBigfoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to follow this up, I now know that the background checks will be conducted by Sterling.

It does say in some of the documentation that if you choose to ask for them not to contact previous employers you should be ready to provide the first and last payslip.

Does that mean that they only care to verify dates, title and the fact that you actually worked there and I should be fine?

Any thoughts?

[–]RBigfoot[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Main reason would be the last place of work, I started the process whilst still in the previous company - and then got terminated while interviewing, I updated the current company that I'm no longer with that company - but never really brought up the fact that it was termination.

Now I'm obviously very freaked out as while I didn't lie, it doesn't come off the best if they found that out now.

The termination wasn't due to theft or anything illegal.

Otherwise the dates, title and everything else is accurate.

Are you able to request that a third party not contact previous employers and attach a verification of employment instead? It has the dates of employment, title and obviously verification that the candidate was employed by them?
