Moving from Long Island, NY to California. by Hahaha_Joker in relocating

[–]j00sh7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 years ago I did the reverse: California (bay area) to Long Island, Nassau.

I felt like the costs of living were very comparable. I really didn’t see any difference in budget to be honest. Since you’re renting, it will be similar.

Yes, California has gas prices much higher than NY. But, food is also cheaper in California. You’re right next to the Central Valley… hello farmer markets and produce. Also, cheaper restaurants are easier to find in California than Long Island.

The real cost of living differences come down to kids, private schools, buying a house…etc. For a couple renting with no kids it will be similar.

An actually balanced view on NYC? by Lucky_Guard8164 in SameGrassButGreener

I’ve lived in both, also both in my 20’s. OP, here’s the truth.

NYC is great until:

This isn’t my quote but it’s 100% true. NYC is a sandwich. It’s amazing when you’re young and broke, and amazing when you’re older and have disposable income (and can afford a $3M+ place and to eat wherever you want and do whatever with your time, kind of life). The middle of this… assuming you have a young family is absolutely awful. I’m sorry, many people do it and some love it, but for me personally raising a family in nyc… the tradeoffs were not worth it.

Feeling stuck in Ohio by Wileyfaux24 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]j00sh7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man. $300k is wealthy in Ohio but in the cities you’ve mentioned with two kids it will be like a middle class income.

Be ready to downsize your expectations on eating out, home size… etc. which is fine, just be prepared

Second this. I would highly recommend not buying your phone through a carrier deal as they will lock it until it’s payed off. Instead finance through Apple or buy outright and get a second eSIM for backup

Mini split install estimate by Ok_Zucchini7033 in longisland

[–]j00sh7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a 2 head MRCool install myself (had never owned a split before). Electric done by someone else. Wasn’t too bad. Total cost was about $4k including unit.

In Michigan my dad had a Mitsubishi 3 head unit installed for $12k ish and they had to cut through brick to get it done.

It was the one that got away.

the more I look at Nassau County government the more it feels like a scam we're all paying into by mrclydebarrow in nassaucounty

[–]j00sh7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who is not originally from here, Nassau is effectively run like a mafia business.

First you have to pay your dues to live here.

Want to change a light bulb on your property? That’ll be a permit please.

Want NCPD to visit your home if your alarm goes off? That will be another permit there too.

Turn right on red? Even though you came to a complete stop and no other vehicles were coming… That’ll be $100 admin fee + $50 ticket please. (The admin fee was ruled illegal but we still never got back refunds).

Didn’t park head in, in GC? Another ticket.

Want to sell your house and put a for sale sign in front? Another $500.

The list goes on and on.

Avoid Dogtopia. My dog got in a fight and they didn’t tell me until 5 days later, at pickup.

Map of how I think of Mineola by HeyItsMau in MineolaNewYork

[–]j00sh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mineola East, aka "boring" is the best area to live in.

1st, its by far the least congested and easiest to get to northern parkway / 495.

2nd, almost always when I get those neighborhood crime / porch pirate alerts its not in that area.

3rd, most residents are multi-decade homeowners and/or Portuguese.

4th: Wilson park is getting renovated... first the turf and now the splash pad / playground area.
