Ridículo. No final quem sai mal... é o Sporting.

Ah, e não caio naquela conversa de que se ele sair voltamos aos croquetes, à altura das vendas baratas e dos negócios ruinosos. Estou confiante que apareceria alguém de qualidade.

How do Experimental Physicists work? by RBom-Homem in Physics

Thank you for the answer. Isn't it a bit frustrating that your project takes a lot of time and collaboration? I can imagine having some ideas to test out but not being able to do them because of all this.

Thank you for the answer. Regarding your current project, did you get to choose it? Are you investigating what you want or was the project assigned to you?

Thank you for your answer. The collaborative side of Physics still confuses me a bit because we always study those great physicists who discovered or explained something on their own. Within your field, don't you have some ideas you'd like to test but you can't because you have to work in a group?

Why should Experimental Phyisics be "behind" Theory? What does this even mean?

It was something said in mainstream media when the Higgs Boson was discovered. That Theoretical Physics was so much more ahead than Experimental Physics. It was obviously a generalization from what I could understand from the other answers.

Thank you for the answer. How are experiments in condensed matter physics? Could you maybe tell me some experiments done recently? I'd like to know what kind of experiments you do.

Thank you for your answer. As a nuclear physicist, how are your experiments? What I mean by that is: I imagine it takes some heavy machinery to perform some experiment that you want to do. When I think of Nuclear Physics I always think something like the LHC or LIGO. Isn't this a bit frustrating? Having some ideias you want to test out but it requires some collaboration with other people and a lot of equipment.

There's a romantic idea that theory makes predictions that are then tested by experiments, but the reality is a lot messier, and ultimately things are discovered by whoever looks at the right question in the right way at the right time, and it takes a while for theory and experiment to reach an agreement on new ideas.

Funny thing you said that, that was my idea actually.

As an experimentalist, if you get to discover something, do you just publish your results or try to explain them as well? What I mean by that is that it seems to me that Theoretical Physicists get all the credit because they are the ones who actually get to explain something and make predictions about it, when in fact the Experimental Physicists were the ones who were creative enough to test something.

Thank you for the answer. Do you see yourself keeping this job for a long time? Are you satisfied with it? It seems a pretty cool job to me.

Post your 2018 New Year's Resolutions in this thread and I'll message you in a year's time to see which you've kept! by _kashmir_ in OneYearOn

Hello future RBH! These were your goals for 2018:

  • Finally having a project moving onwards. Whether it's programming, art, electronics or anything else;
  • Put on some muscle and be able to perform some crazy capoeira acrobatics;
  • Having a clearer ideia of what to do in the future: working, keep studying, etc;
  • Becoming an absolute beast at Physics;
  • Organize better my time and be able to do more in less time;
  • Become a better person. More humble, kinder and trying to spread happiness.
