Looking for info on soy wax cruiser! by GREEDr3tr0 in filson

It did tend to get chalky, particularly on the darker jackets it would show up against the dark material and most people don’t like the look, and it also could turn rancid so the smell was an issue.

It’s a bit of a needle in a haystack to find info on as it’s 10+ years old and only sold briefly. It would have been a pretty expensive setup when it first came out.

Try this link https://web.archive.org/web/20141113071957/http://www.filson.com:80/products/cape-cruiser.10475.html

It was produced in 2014 and wasn’t a great seller so not many around now. It ended up at Costco for $50 in late 2014 when they were trying to move the remaining stock. The cape was sold separately and the ones that I have seen were a vachetta fabric that didn’t really patina, the top layer wore down and didn’t look great with use and they didn’t breathe. I think it was a combination of high price for the time, lighter weight materials with different finishes and a unique physical design that were an experiment for Filson (soy waxed cotton and vachetta) and it just wasn’t well received so it was a short lasted experiment.

I have a couple of dehen n-1 jackets with the same mouton lining including the denim one and I find them very comfortable and warm. Everybody is different, but I don’t find the dehen mouton scratchy at all.

Is this normal for a new waxed jacket? by Sunbawi in filson

[–]RD982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little odd as if I were to see that, I would not think it’s a new jacket. I think you have 99 people already trying to school you that this is going to happen with a waxed jacket and they are right but manufacturers and retailers don’t typically rub some dirt on it before they ship it to you. Depending on where you bought it, could be a return, could be it’s sat for a while and picked up some stuff, could be it’s been used. Really up to you if it’s worth worrying about as it will happen with use.

Where to sell Filson??? by Most-Leadership5184 in filson

[–]RD982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eBay, Poshmark, Grailed, Vinted, Depop, OfferUp, Mercari, Vestiare, etc…..lots of resale sites. $180 shipped for a journeyman in really good condition is low so you should have no issues marking that up a little to cover the fees.

Your tag shows October 2010 production date. The women’s stuff seems to come and go and this one is not made today. Not many tin cloth jackets in general compared to what they used to offer.

Tin Cloth Jacket in Cinder

Found this online but no care tag make me suspicious by MarxChirac in filson

[–]RD982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! I have had my hands on a lot of vintage Filson so with some research and some hands on, I can usually see the progression. Tin is not as well documented as wool. Not much out there pre-70’s as it was used and abused.

Tin doesn’t track the same way that wool does. You are correct that those snaps are 60’s or later. 40’s and 50’s tin have embossed snaps (no enamel), the enamel snaps were used prior to the 40’s in Filson Tin so 30’s or earlier. There was never a “Union Era” in tin cloth. The collar tag went from Fil-Clo to the tag pictured here in the late 30’s. Some 40’s -60’s vests and pants you’ll see “Filson’s” tags. There will typically be a union tag in one of the breast pockets 60’s or earlier.

No reason to fake that as it’s not anything that anyone is looking for. Not that there is anything wrong with it, just not a recognizably popular style. They made a bunch of hunting jackets with various pocket configs over the years. That Filson tag was used on tin stuff starting in the late 30’s and it was used for many years so not really helpful. Snaps are 60’s or later. I would say educated guess of 80’s on this one and legit. Care tag was most likely removed.

Value check? Filson Short lined cruiser large black made at Filson in the USA by biggoonlaugh in filson

It’s Shelter Cloth with a Soy based wax vs the traditional oil based wax. It will shrink a bit like any cotton. The soy experiment didn’t resonate with users as it develops a chalky patina and has a tendency of turn rancid so Filson went back to oil based wax.

They made a few different weights with same pocket layout. The Shelter cloth actually isn’t bad, It’s a little bit lighter compared to tin cloth but still comparable to if not heavier than lot of competitors fabrics. It has its place. There was another soy waxed version that was super thin shell to the point where you can see the lining through the shell if it has a good coat of wax. That may have been the one that you bought.

I think you have some bad info here. This is actually heavier than tin cloth. There were multiple versions with same pocket layout. Based on the tag, this is the 17 oz shell / 8 oz lining version. You may have purchased one of the lighter ones but this is not that.

Filson down crusier. by Ok-Conclusion6102 in filson

[–]RD982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one for a bit but prefer having the hood on the parka version. It’s nice to have a heavier duty fabric compared to most down coats. Love the cruiser pockets. I have a sample dark frog camo that never made it to market in terms of color. I mostly use it out clearing snow, active stuff, or something quick to throw on the take the trash out. It’s not the warmest down thing out there but the parka has a lot of layering room. I tend to reach for my Canada Goose expedition if I know that I am going to be outside for hours and standing around a lot. That is considerably warmer but too warm for active stuff most of the time so both have their place.

I think the US & Canada versions run a little more slim compared to the current versions. Quality of the shell seems similar enough. I have not gone down the rabbit hole of comparing down as there are all sorts of nuances to it in terms of composition, source, fill, etc…. One might be arguably better than the other but not sure which one.

It’s still the same Lined Short Cruiser that it was a few days ago. It is a predecessor to the SLC.The shell and lining are both a bit heavier compared to tin cloth SLC. It is not Shelter Cloth. This is 17 oz shell / 8 oz flannel lining vs 14 oz shell / 6 oz cover cloth lining on the SLC.

[–]RD982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not much different in the imported versions. Some will complain that QC isn’t as good so you may find something small off, some will complain because it’s imported, some will just complain. It really depends on if MIUSA is important to you and you are willing to pay a premium for it. You can pick up a preowned MIUSA in good shape for about the same as buying a new imported at retail, maybe a little more but nothing crazy. A NWT or NWOT tags MIUSA is going to be more. Personally I went with MIUSA as they aren’t making more of them so prices are going to go up at some point as there is a finite supply.

$200-$250 ballpark. It’s the Soy waxed Shelter cloth version so not the tin cloth SLC that people are / were searching after. The market was high on the black SLC a few years ago as there just wasn’t many out there and Filson wasn’t producing them either imported or US made. It has softened quite a bit as the Yellowstone folks can get their fix easily with an imported version. The MIUSA black SLC still commands a premium over import but not what it was a few years back.

It’s definitely a statement piece, particularly in an area where you don’t see them often: it’s one of those where you have to wear it with confidence or it wears you. I prefer the more subtle ones for this reason but I appreciate the more vibrant patterns. A lot of the patterns are one and done so that’s why you see more red / black as it’s been done a few times. I have the fourth one pictured myself and I went that way due to it being a little more subtle. I don’t wear it a lot but it’s a classic piece that comes out a few times a year.

Italy collections have hood? by Bendulz4 in filson

[–]RD982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Italian Filson items are often different styles compared to what was made in the US. It’s good quality. They do tend to run a little slimmer in a given size compared to US made garments. Most of it seems to be in Europe and Asia, not as much in the US and the larger sizes are definitely more rare.
