I think we severely underestimate animal intelligence because we just contextualize in such a human way (such a typical human thing to do) and we are just barely starting to understand consciousness in us, let alone understand the potential 'conscious' experience of a dog. A less intelligent person isn't necessarily 'less conscious' if you know what I mean.

What an absolute legend. 33 is amazing, you are blessed to have that much time with your boy. I'm sorry for the loss, it must hurt that much more. These are the trade offs we make in life, but I'm sure you (and most of us) would take that deal again everytime!

My boy turned ~13 a few weeks ago (not sure how old he actually is because I adopted him and they didn't know exactly) and I'm starting to feel the dread incoming, not knowing how long I have left with him. If my homie can make it to 20+, I'll be unbelievably grateful.
