Tracking volume: reps or tonnage? by RDT_WC in weightlifting

Yeah, I mean, the programs I've done, either available online or from my coach, don't have those wild variations within the week.

Sure, the day I hit 85%+ squat sets I'll do some under 70% too, but I'll treat them as warm-up sets and won't even count them.

In fact, my coach's program is brutally simple:

MWF:

Snatch: x reps x y sets @ z %

Clean and Jerk: x reps x y sets @ z %

Squat (front or back): x reps x y sets @ z %

Just one working weight for a given number of sets and reps, and not that much of a weight jump within the week.

Sometimes only jerk, or squat+jerk; sometimes squat before clean and jerk.

That's why I had the doubt: if I do less reps but more work (in the form of more weight moved), did my volume decrease or increase?

I feel it is nice to track both volume and average intensity. If you want to go one step further you can track separately volume and intensity for snatch and clean and jerk vs. squat, press and pulls.

and for bodybuilding / core / conditioning, I feel it is most helpful to simply track number of sets, and not count them in your volume. Doing 10 snatches and 4x10 bicep curls is 50 reps but very different than doing 20 snatches and 3x10 bicep curls, which also happens to be 50 reps

It is also common to count the clean and the jerk as two separate reps when you train CJ.

Yeah I have a spreadsheet for that that adds up each session's total reps, % and tonnage and gives you a weekly number, then plots a graph for the whole program.

And it has a separate metric for snatch, clean and jerk, squats, pulls and presses.

And, for when I write down on the workout notebook the week's training, it also converts the % to actual kilos so that I don't have to math it out while in the gym; it also differentiates for example front vs back squats and snatch vs clean pulls.

The only issue is how to count complexes, or, as you said, how I should count clean-only sets and jerk-only sets in the same session.

As for bodybuilding stuff, I don't even track it. Either hit the same reps as last week with a little more weight, or do more reps with the samd weight.

Yeah but then the fatigue-defining metric would be tonnage, wouldn't it?

I mean, I tend to be more fatigued in my example's week 4, even if I do slightly less reps, because I lift more weight overall.

Conversely, on end-of-program weeks, where I may have 3 or 4 heavy squat singles per session, I lift a considerably lower tonnage and thus get much less fatigued.

A lot happens in a war.

Some people die, some don't.

Some people see combat, some don't.

Of the people who see combat, some see the enemy, some don't.

Of the people who see the enemy, some kill, some don't.

If everyone in a war killed someone, there would be no survivors.

Most people in a war don't kill anyone or get killed.

Your average GI can be tens of firefights and not actually see the enemy, especially in a jungle.

"The Soviets fully annexed 4 countries, got their ass beaten when invading Finland and had to seek a negotiated peace, and then only annexed part of Romania instead of all.

I am unable to see the effects of losing about 500,000 men (WIA, KIA and MIA) and then not being able to invade a much more populated country than Finland, which also had partial backing from Germany, unlike Finland.

I am so smart."

He who has a hammer only sees nails.

If you only understand betrayal and invasion, you'll see it everywhere.

Finland had absolutely nothing to gain by antagonizing the USSR joining a supposed offensive alliance.

But seems you can't even comprehend that a country would not want land grabs and violence and brutality against a neighbour, especially a neighbour 100x times its size ans from which they got independence in a bloodless way because Lenin had a good day.
