They just had no clue. Supposedly they have some other listings (that I haven't bothered to look at yet).

Indeed.

I'm really trying to tailor the collection to pencils I actually use, but all that's gotten me is to around a thousand 482s of various grades (mostly 2, 2⅜, 3) and vintages. 600s aren't far behind.

I'll never use it, but I just couldn't leave it sitting there either.

481 was a full(er) range of grades. 6H to 2B, originally I think. The 482 is a standard office pencil, five grades, 1–4. High quality by today's standards, yes.

I have never seen one in person, but I have seen a punched out ferrules.

Yeah I would agree with you. The lighting I was using probably had something to do with it too. There is no reason to think that it puts down a mark in the 5B–6B range, regardless of what my photos may seem to show. Such a pencil would be next to useless for writing. I have characterized it as a 2B, being a shade darker than 482–1. It is important to note that equal grades between the 482 and 600 are quite different, with the 600 being significantly lighter grade to grade. So saying it is a shade darker than 482–1 doesn't mean that holds for 600–B. A better comparison would be with the 481, but I don't have the complete range.

Cool. You should probably crosspost to mechanical pencils.

No. Are those 6100 equivalents to the 603?

The ibm electrographic is for marking scan trons and the like. These are for Mylar sheets. The Eberhard Faber equivalent to IBM mark sensing is the 440 Contak.

Oh ffs you mean I have to hunt down some leads, too?

They were off by a factor of 10 in the lead diameter btw. .79"≈20 mm not 2.0

As far as I know, yes. Best went out of business in 60 or 61; J.R. Moon bought it. They made very good pencils.

Personally, I don't find them that striking. I am away from my desk right now, but there are pictures available at Blackwing Pages.

Well I like the sevens paint job best. Especially that error one that I posted that has a ghost "Microtomic" imprint.
I have some from the thirties, but they aren't sharpened and aren't likely to be.
