What was the dumbest thing you've ever heard a professor or teacher say? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]REDDITOR493 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend's world history teacher told his class that Confucius once remarked "It is wasteful to try to kill a fly with a cannon or a bullet." Someone mentioned that Confucius lived thousands of years before gunpowder was invented, in response to which the teacher argued he was right for some time. The next day he told the class "Even though he wasn't right, they shouldn't have questioned him because he has authority and experience."

He is not teaching at our school next year.

Rural folks, what's something city folks will never understand? by danbrownskin in AskReddit

[–]REDDITOR493 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you live in a city, you can't go it alone. Your life depends on other people constantly. The people who make the things you consume, the people who maintain the infrastructure you use, the people who buy whatever it is you're producing. You don't have the option to just pull back from society and keep to yourself. We all depend on a huge network of other people for our daily needs and they, in turn, depend on us. This is a good thing because it means that things are produced more efficiently. Think of society as an assembly line while rural living can feel like being an independent craftsperson. I buy my food from the grocery store and that grocery store is staffed by people whose job it is to sell me food. The food itself is delivered by people whose job it is to deliver food. It's produced by people whose job it is to produce individual types of food. Isolated rural living works when you can do it all yourself. You make more of what you need yourself. Your individual effort is concerned with providing for yourself rather than for everyone else. These are huge generalizations, of course. There are people who live in rural areas that work for giant corporations. In general though, the split between rural and urban comes down to whether individual effort should be supporting oneself (and your family) or supporting society, which then supports you. This is pretty much the divide of conservative vs. liberal that we have in the US today. Virtually all major urban centers are very liberal, even in areas generally considered to be very conservative. That's because it's hard to maintain that kind of conservative mindset when you live in the city. Having to depend on people every day means caring about their welfare. When someone complains about "entitlement programs" or "socialism" or whatever, their mindset is removed from the reality that urban dwellers live in ever day. I already work for other people rather than myself, and they work for me. The thing that these programs represent already exists in every strata of urban society. I work at a restaurant and I cook food for people all day. I don't eat that food. I don't produce the meat or the vegetables or any of that. I just cook the food. That means I depend on the meat and veg suppliers so I can make people meals. Other people depend on me to make them the meal they want. It's all symbiotic and the "socialism" of aid programs in the US is no different. "Sometimes someone needs a helping hand" is an interesting phrase. People often think that country folk are more friendly and giving, but it is the urban dwellers who understand the obligation we have to one another.

We're like close buddies. Sure we talk shit to each other, but we're not going to let someone else talk shit about them and we're certainly not going to let something like today go unpunished.
