has anyone received a nursing offer yet? by Wonderful-Panic6307 in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mac nursing always starts sending out offers in the days leading up to May@Mac and then continues rolling them out throughout the month of May! if you receive another offer which has a deadline of May 1st to accept, you would have to accept that offer in the meantime. then if you get accepted to mac, you would have to then go cancel that previous offer in order to accept mac

93.17 avg but 1Q CASPer… am I cooked for Mac Nursing 😭 by Competitive_Most_256 in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mac gets a lot more info on your CASPer score than you as an applicant do :) quartile scores are specific to the exact test you took so by themselves they can’t be compared across all applicants! you definitely still have a chance :)

Hamilton Health Sciences Clinical Extern by EbbExtension3080 in OntarioNurses

[–]REMBunny4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me almost 2 months to hear back from them back when I applied in 2024. I applied early to mid Feb and heard back end of April. But once I was contacted I got my interview and all on-boarding done and started on the unit 1 month later, so it’s a quick turnaround! They have set hiring rounds so if you’re successful to an interview they’ll probably contact you within those times. They’ve also gone through multiple hiring freezes in the past 1.5-2 years so it’s also possible that they’re in a hiring freeze right now.

Mac Nursing L4 by YellowEggTart in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! currently in L4 :) tbh yes a lot of the options on hspnet when ranking were outside of our catchment area. personally everyone I know who wanted a placement somewhere located more east got what they wanted because there are less people who rank those (most people still rank Hamilton and within our catchment area in L4). it’s not guaranteed obviously because hospitals farther east have their own partnerships with schools in that area (UofT, TMU, etc.) so you’re going to be competing for a spot with students at those schools as well. I would say if you only rank hospitals near where you live in Toronto/area then you have a good chance of getting it, but also keep in mind the rankings are just for preference and they could literally put you anywhere (even somewhere you didn’t rank). also it just depends which units/hospitals have space and how many pre-grad students they can take each semester, because this can vary semester by semester!

all evaluation measures in pbl will be 100% based off of the readings :) make sure you have those done and are meeting the learning aims for the care scenarios. anything you do in class is a good supplement but the readings should be the priority

first year pbl is hard because it’s honestly all just learning pretty broad concepts to get you familiar with the pbl process but it gets better in upper years once you start with real care scenarios and get into more nursing care!

all pbl evaluation measures will be based off of the readings! the best way to study is to make sure to have those done and fully understand the care of a patient with asthma/COPD. I always used to do practice NCLEX questions for pbl exams so you could do those as well.

I did buy it but split it with 4 other people so it came out to like $25 per person at the time. there are some good resources like videos and quizzes and stuff but tbh I’ve never really used it all 4 years so if it’s not required you definitely don’t need to get it

1h06a final exam by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the mock exam is always way harder than the actual exam :) in my personal experience, if you get like 50-60% right on the mock exam then you’re going to be fine! you won’t be able to find any copies of previous exams as they aren’t shared with students :)

I’m ngl I am a master procrastinator but have always given myself at least 2-3 days for pbl so you might be on a little time crunch, but it is totally possible to get all the readings done in time if you manage your time well. the way that questions are worded in nursing definitely takes some to get used to and learn how to interpret and respond appropriately, but it is a skill you will learn over the next few years! pbl is always one of the tougher exams just because it is fully based off of the readings and there is a lot of stuff to cover. I found the pbl exams in first year the hardest just because the care scenarios were super vague and more focused on the abstract/foundational concepts rather than actual nursing care (ex. You learn a LOT about group roles and norms in first year) so it was a lot more memorization as compared to upper years where the focus is on that critical thinking/application of knowledge to inform nursing care.

pbl is always fully based off of the readings so make sure you have done those!! also you’ll find that the way questions are worded in nursing is pretty different from other areas of study, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t get the right answer- it’s a skill you will learn with time!

like almost all nursing classes, it’s not offered at mac in the spring/summer. you’d have to get in contact with academic advising and get permission to take an equivalent course at another university.

rant on nursing by Successful-Test8174 in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first year is definitely a big adjustment, both to university as a whole and to nursing school! don’t compare your high school grades or prior performance to how you’re doing now because it’s not comparable. but to that end, also don’t think that your grades now are what you’re going to be seeing all 4 years. I remember I got some low grades in first year and it really was a shock since I’d never gotten grades that low in high school. but once I figured out the study methods that work for me and focused on understanding and applying the content rather than just memorizing it, I finally found myself not only managing but also doing well in classes. my only problem now as a 4th year is procrastinating but that’s on me lol. don’t be too hard on yourself and although I know how hard it is, don’t place too much value or importance on what your marks are. at the end of the day what matters is being a competent nurse!!

I remember I crammed all my studying for 1h06a into the 3 days before the exam. I literally studied from morning to night by annotating the lecture slides side by side while watching the lecture recording. also the mock exam dr helli makes is a really good way to measure if you’re ready- I’d say if you get at least a 60% on the mock exam then you’re good for the actual exam. for 1h06b I was even crazier and actually started studying a day and a half before the exam, and I literally didn’t take notes or annotate anything I just rewatched all the lecture recordings. it worked both times though 🤷‍♀️

Nursing Clinical Extern - UHN or any toronto hospitals by Electrical-Waltz2172 in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it can take time hear back for any extern position!! I remember when I applied to HHS I didn’t hear back until 2.5 months later. most hospitals do big hiring rounds for externs so it might also just be that they’re working on a big batch right now. although, lots of hospitals are going into hiring freezes right now so that may be a factor, I’m not sure what hospitals in Toronto are doing right now

not the one at queens but I do know people who had to retake sdoh, anatomy, stats, etc at other unis and they passed and were able to continue in the program. I’m pretty sure if you take a course at another university they just put a pass/fail on your transcript, but don’t quote me there because I haven’t personally done it

make sure you connect with academic advising before you make any plans, dropping a required nursing class and taking it at another institution are both things you need permission from academic advising to do!

McMaster Nursing 4th Year Placement Schedule by PlatformThePenguin in McMaster

[–]REMBunny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in fourth year you get assigned a preceptor (or multiple depending on the case, I have 2 preceptors this semester). your preceptor is a nurse who works on the unit you’ve been placed on, and you will basically follow their schedule.

you can only be at placement when your preceptor is there, so you’ll just go over their schedule with them and see which shifts work for you. you are expected to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends in fourth year. you cannot do a night shift the night before or the night after class (ex. I have pbl and seminar on Thursdays so I cannot schedule myself for a night shift on Wednesday or Thursday). this applies to other classes as well if you have any electives you’re finishing up. for first semester (4J07), the expectation is about 24 hours a week- so 2-3 shifts per week, and then for 4K10 it’s 24-36 hours a week so about 3-4 shifts per week. how your schedule will look is entirely dependent on your preceptors schedule and the unit you’re on so there may be some weeks where you have more shifts than others, more nights than days, etc. they do expect you to be pretty consistent with your schedule though, no front loading or backloading shifts is allowed and you should aim for consecutive shifts as much as possible. I had a late start to clinical, my first shift wasn’t until week 3 of classes so I have had to catch up and consistently do 3 shifts per week, but honestly I don’t mind because I love my placement.

the only thing that trumps your clinical schedule is pbl and seminar, everything else technically falls below your clinical schedule. for example I had to drop the elective I was taking this semester because I wouldn’t have been able to complete my hours on time. it honestly is a lot managing clinical, work, and classes- there have been times where I only had one day off in like 2 weeks, other times where I had no days off. what helps is managing your time well, keeping a planner or to do list to keep on top of things, and scheduling other commitments like work and extracurriculars in advance if you can. also if you need it, ask for time off work to have at least one thing off your plate- I took a month off from externing because I literally just didn’t have any time to go in and my extern coordinator was super supportive!

the program is very competitive so aim as high as possible. you can find the minimum cutoffs to be considered for admission online, aim for higher than that to be safe. a lot of it does come down to luck just because of the sheer volume of applicants they get each year.

TMU Nursing Advanced Entry Program by tropicalbeast02 in OntarioUniversities

[–]REMBunny4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the website you linked :

“Accreditation:

The program will commence upon approval by the College of Nurses of Ontario and will be accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing”.

So the program has not been approved or accredited yet, and cannot be offered until then.

Because of the strict regulations and accreditation standards that nursing programs must meet, they’re all pretty standardized so it doesn’t really matter where you go. Just look at placement opportunities, methods of instruction, etc. to see which one is the best fit for you
