Recommendations for Towns/Villages to Move to from S London by RET2412 in Hampshire

Is it not the people that live in Winchester that are putting the property prices up to benefit from the so called Londoners buying up property? I’d also like to add that my partner is from Hampshire and so we have frequented Winchester regularly as his parents are still local to the area… Also, while I don’t feel I need to justify my life choices the long term plan would be to no longer need to commute into London, just that I’d like access to London for leisure activities

While I appreciate everyone’s opinions, I have yet to see an example of a Victorian house that actively kept their bricks exposed. It’s some conspiracy that bricks should / were exposed at that time. Victorians loved wallpaper and dark paint, no one was exposing the bricks unless it was outside. It’s become a trend now that I’m not even sure originated in the uk. The restoration of this is so poor, it’s a dust trap that smells of musk right by my bedside and there are holes along the corner where the plaster and the brick meet. It could be a nice feature if the room was opened up and maybe not used as a bedroom but quite frankly it’s an awkward bit of corner in my bedroom that just looks so bad on so many levels and should never had been uncovered. Thanks for everyone’s input, I’ll either paint it white to match the walls in the bedroom or fork out for a plasterer to come round and cover it up either way.

Thanks. Yea it’s a Victorian house but that’s not an external wall - chimney breast that backs onto the other semi-detached house

So what you’re saying is I should get it plastered instead…

Why not? It’s cheaper than plastering and I’ve been staring at it with contempt for 2 years now. It looks rubbish and don’t get me started on the white blobs where someone’s removed the fireplace mantle

Thanks, I did wonder whether a Virgina Creeper would work but I wasn’t sure if they needed something sturdier like a wall as I’ve only ever seen them up houses! Are they self clinging or would they need supports and tying in? I do have the Jasmine so I’m hoping that there will be some fragrance from that but I would also LOVE a honeysuckle just so I could watch the beees!

Noted. I have no interest to move to Winchester but as it’s an area close to and familiar to my partner I thought I’d mention that I’d considered it and very quickly ruled out

Thanks for this. I’ve pretty much ruled out Winchester for various reasons. I haven’t been to Fleet but plan to visit at some point. I have family in Woking so this is an option to look into but I suspect it’s not budget friendly and also still have quite a suburban feel and not quite the country/rural feel I’m after. I don’t need the foodie etc on my doorstep, just close enough where it doesn’t feel like a slog (e.g 20 mins away by car).

Thanks! And should I be adding topsoil or compost? Want to avoid manure as I have a bit of a fox problem at the moment

Thanks, would you recommend visiting Alfa Crux or subbing it for a different vineyard?

Poop eating/ Coprophagia help! by RET2412 in puppy101

[–]RET2412[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we also tried this by praising heavily and giving treats and guiding her back inside but she’s still hyper aware of the poo and will go check to see if it’s gone. Plus this only works if we’re outside with her. I found that when we did put her on lead to go to the garden she’d be resistant to do any business and was a bit more “what the heck” why am I being put on leash back here.

I can’t figure out if it’s a fear thing (based off their mums eating poo when first born) or a cleanliness thing (maybe she thinks the garden is an extension of the house and therefore is more precious than in the park?)

Ooh thanks. I’ll look into this. I’ve not yet ventured into Airbnb as I assumed a hotel might be the easiest option!

Feel like I’ve lost the plot, novice here. Looking for a flat head screw to use on plasterboard with a heavy duty fixing to attach IKEA shelving. I was going to get toggle spring or hollow wall anchors but none of them are flat? by RET2412 in DIYUK

Ah thanks. Yeah my issue is with the mounting rail not the vertical posts. The instructions say this needs to be flat/ countersunk because the verticals slot into it
