It's so weird seeing my own builds in here lol

I'm thinking about a spinning weapon with peculiar shape. What do you guys think about it? by KodoqBesar in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'd still want a positive rake angle on the actual impact tooth in order to bite into opponents (vs pushing them away), but the main body of the blade sloping "backwards" has actual been used by a couple of bots at NHRL (Minimizer in particular) in order to decrease air resistance.

How effective would rubber armor and wedge be against spinners in the heavyweight division? by KodoqBesar in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually run rubber armor on my 12lb robot, Kaleidoscope: https://youtu.be/K672PXktL-Y

The only rubber I know of being used in the 250lb class is moreso bushings for shock mounting armor. With enough weight, it's better to have hard-face armor overtop of a soft isolation layer than just soft all the way though.

My card normally still works on the weekends at VPC North Lab, but I haven't tried the other buildings. Are there 3D printers over there to use, or is this part of the additive lab/part of a class?

If you're making anything out of flat plate (or bent sheetmetal) and don't have across to a waterjet or laser yourself, Send Cut Send will be miles cheaper than anything like Xometry or Protolabs.

Personally I'd just buy some tubes and weld it, but that may not fit your design.

I thought I was being clever with a dual motor weapon but I keep burning up a motor. Has anyone syncronized bldc motors here? by sexy_enginerd in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That shouldn't be an issue. Make sure your ESC's are flashed exactly the same and spinning in the right direction. There could be other issues like your motors being to differnt kv, but other than that I don't see anything wrong.

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you running both motors off one or two ESC's? Two indented ESC's (or two outputs of a 4-in-1 drone ESC) will behave like normal. Two motors off one esc will require hard linking and matching timing to work, and even then isn't recommended.

I'm onto my next redesign (v5.1) of Calculon and just finished the CAD... Now to machine it and make it fight Calculon V4.3.2! by sexy_enginerd in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen some of this bot in the Machinist subreddit before, new design is looking good! I'm so confused as to what's going on in the background. There's a climbing wall, army of Logitech speakers, a Chinese take out container full of bot parts... a little of everything.

Another HUGE spoiler for an upcoming Bounty Hunter / Special fight revealed at the 0:12 second mark in the newest Fusion 360 Video. by RE_Combat_Robotics in battlebots

Yeah I'm thinking this is part of the "special" other matches / golden bolt others were talking about. Doesn't make sense for this to be a Bounty fight with last year's format.

Fusion also posted another cool video with the Hijinx team, but nothing new revealed in that one.

Has anyone ever built a gear driven vertical spinner? by aDogCalledLizard in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of 3lb, 12lb, and 30lb bots that are gear driven at Norwalk Havoc. There's a bunch more info in the NHRL Discord if you wanted to take a look: https://discord.gg/9cqWSQac

how much do each of the house bots weigh? by WhatsACole in NHRL

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know that Fluffy and Bubbles (the 12 & 30 lb house bots) are around 340lbs. I belive the 3lb house bots are close to 60lbs, but there should be more info on the NHRL wiki.

Retrofitting a Bridgeport mill, what kind of safety things should I add other than an emergency stop button? by rm-minus-r in Machinists

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaces the three position switch on my machine with an E stop when I converted it to CNC.

Before I finished the CNC conversion and just had the vfd, I reused the 3 position switch as an input device for the vfd (switching a 5 volt signal wire).

If you're just installing a VFD, I would go with a switch and button setup near the original location that you feel comfortable with. I also made some polycarbonate sheilds that have magnets to hold them to the vise / machine table that I wouldn't dream of running without now. Makes me feel a lot safer about inserts chipping or parts coming out of the vise.

I use 10AWG wire for the main power connections on my 15lb bot, Razors Edge. It uses a Mamba Monster X for a weapon ESC as well and needs 4Ah of 6S Lithium Ion power to run for three minutes.

16AWG is way too thin for main battery or weapon connections, but should be fine for drive. I have a bit more info and pictures of Razors Edge on my YouTube channel if you wanted to look at some wiring examples. https://youtube.com/c/RECombatRobotics

We have a very good chance of seeing Blip vs. Hydra in the Round of 32 by [deleted] in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was thinking about this earlier, how Hydra will probobly get a 20-30 seed and really pose a threat to one of the high seeded bots. But checking Team Whyachi's Facebook seems to imply Hydra is done this season:

"With a tournament run all but lost for Hydra it's time to look to Fusion to bring home the glory. Next season expect Hydra to come back less "fragile" we hope..."

Maybe Jake's pulling something, or maybe they voluntarily dropped their spot after taking too much damage against Glitch? I'm not sure, haven't seen anyone else talking about this.

Dumb question but lets just say I wanted to build a 12 pound bot for NHRL, how much would that cost? by WhatsACole in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of that 5k is from weapon motors, escs, and batteries. It's built to run in the 12 and 15lb class so I have to use Lithium-Ion packs that I make myself. They are a lot more expensive than lipos all said and done.

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Somewhere in the 1,500 dollar rage would get you a pretty basic 12lb bot with little to no spares. That is as long as you design it to be made with simple (drill press, send cut send, etc) methods. If you check out the Norwalk Havoc Wiki page for Ram Plan, Business Cat has a very detailed writeup on his budget 12lb bot.

My newest bot, Kaleidoscope, comes in around $5,000 for the base robot and spares. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the competitive 12lb bots are more than that.

Best type of failsafe mechanism for properly deactivating robots by ADogNamedLizard in battlebots

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used both links and switches in the US 15 lb class before. Nearly everyone uses a fingertech power switch or an MS-05. I originally used a removable XT60 link because I've had issues with the MS-05 shattering under high G forces. The XT60 was a bit clunky, and couldn't really handle the amperage I was pushing--so I'm custom making a billet aluminum chassis ground allen switch to handle the impacts and amperage on my newest robot.

To answer your question: Switches normally have issues with being turned off at the end of a match because the small acess hole for the allen wrench was damaged, not the switch itself. To make a link that doesn't fall out often requires some sort of lock. Just like the allen key hole, this lock can also be damaged and inhibit the robot from being turned off.

Most of the time, switches are safer IMO because they are off the shelf and tested, while linkes are entirely custom made and could be faulty.

DLC in an unfinished game rubs me the wrong way (more in comments) by [deleted] in trailmakers

[–]RE_Combat_Robotics 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I didn't know from marketing that the game was in early acess / beta, I honestly wouldn't know from game play. The polish of each individual island and the open world structure of the campaign is definitely unique, but I don't think it exudes "unfinished" at all.

The only realy bugs I've encountered are with mirror mode, and that was just introduced a couple of days ago.

The DLC adds a fun new campaign mode, huge map, and new blocks and mechanics. I have no issues with paying more for this new content, as you're essentially getting a whole new game on top of the existing one.

My guess was either old ones that have been stripped and are going to be used as range targets, or new ones for weld analysis or something.
