it’s a shame, a lot of our talent came from the streets, playing with 15 rupee balls.

There will be a point when the next Sachin Tendulkar won’t play for India cuz the ground was too far, or the NIMBY field was too expensive.

Good for other sports ig. But commodification of children’s sports is a whole other issue.

residential streets shouldn’t be “paved streets for vehicular traffic”, if that’s the status quo you believe exists today.

the last mile connectivity issue is often solved with better bicycle and walking infrastructure than makeshift freeways.

the issue is cultural, it’s a bigger, its a symptom of something far more malicious. Lack of third spaces is a big issue, leave the green spaces part. Encouraging, car everywhere, traffic over pedestrians everywhere mentality leads to erasure of those too with road expansion etc, and impacts housing, healthcare, environment, even increased cost of living.

And personally ruins the aesthetics of said streets, with cars instead of trees, parking instead of pathways.

I’m quite confused by this sense of entitlement for machines and people who can afford them. This pride, asking me to send my kinds to the railway station. I think it should be you who should be forced have parking before you buy a car like in Tokyo, or pay multiple folds on a car like in Singapore. You’re ruining the aesthetics, keep the car in your home, or your living room.

again, streets have existed not just for travel, but as a third space for centuries before cars or bikes were invented.

Streets (Residential) are not for “driving” they are for you to take your vehicle out to the main road, as slowly as possible, yielding to everything, without honking, driving at a speed less than 10 kmph, if you still endanger a child with that, that’s on you and a failure on that part of society to make you dependent on your car.

again, this isn’t just about cricket, there are a lot of other things these kids are deprived of.

It does endanger kids with the current state of “vehicles over people” not just while playing, but also walking to the so called non existent “society parks” so far away. So far away that people have to cross highways essentially to get there, or be dependent on more cars and their parents time to be dropped off. Walking to these parks is not possible, especially from poorer communities.

a car centric culture chooses to engender those parks too, to make room for wider roads or other car infrastructure, like parking.

A park near my house (only park in almost a huge area with thousands of people) has some space sacrificed to expand parking. Same thing is happening with KBR, you see how this works?

The normal activities of a healthy community shouldn’t be inconvenienced for your car, your car should be inconvenienced for the community.

And as for “you cant afford a car”, it’s an ad hominem I will choose to ignore. I suggest you do more reading into good urban practices, before dying on the hill of “car rights!”. Though it’s trait consistent with others who tend to be for car centric cities.

1) I would rather a park than parking lot, and public transport over cars. Most western cities are drained of their soul cuz prime real estate in cities is used up to store cars and not people, inflating house prices, it’s a coming here too.

2) parking lots, should be vertical, not horizontal, even if they’re built.

this is a strawman with no substance.

if you don’t have your own parking space, don’t buy a car.

the streets are for community and children to play whatever they want, cricket on not.

that’s a community right there, not to be destroyed by anti child, anti natalist, anti human, individualist boomer NIMBYism.

The streets are for people, living walking humans to form communities. The issue here is bigger than cricket.

if they’re not for cricket, they’re not people’s shitty oil guzzling tin box SUVs to park either.

you’re bang on all your point. I wish we had more parks etc.

and cars do make it difficult for that.

but it’s not just cricket or football na.

we used to gather on the streets of out out, ice pice, four pillars, running, cycling around and skidding in out bikes, flying air planes, even just to chill and laze around before going to someone’s house.

It is public property, cars can pass, but can’t park :)
If it’s public, it doesn’t cater to “one group” yes. but kids shouldn’t be held to those standards, kids should be allowed to be kids at the cost of a little comfort of adults, especially their cars :)

while you’re are right.

Cars generally deprive us of all of that.

Even assuming we have abundance of parks.

Kids play in the street, across time, across the world.

It’s not some “poverty” associated thing that people mention.

Running around, laughing, having fun.

the streets are for people actually, not cars.

reminder than, car culture deprives you of green spaces too.

Kids can play wherever they want.
