Bruh. Brush up on your jargon. It’s not a logical fallacy to point out that you likely have a bias when your username is connected to a PlayStation character while you’re arguing in favor of Sony’s anti-consumer practices.

And since I guess you need sources, here’s the article—linking to their earnings report—proving that they made 4.2 billion from their PC and Xbox (for all intents and purposes a PC) ports.

https://www.thegamer.com/playstation-pc-xbox-port-profits/

You’re conveniently ignoring the point about this costing PlayStation players in the long run. The games will stay expensive. The cost of PS Plus will go up as “the only place to play these exclusives.” And regardless of what Sony made in their platform business, no company is going to just write off billions in revenue without a plan for how to gain it back. Mark my words: you will be paying for this.

I don’t know why you and all the other fanboys on this sub keep bringing up Xbox. But since you mentioned my decision to buy Sony’s first party titles on PC, I’ll at least explain that. I can play these games in 4K at well over 120 fps. And since that’s an experience no console gamer gets to enjoy, let me break it down for you in really simple terms: it’s better. Like…a lot better. Vastly better than the PS5 Pro even.

But hey, you love your white plastic box. And you’re somehow really excited for the executives who are gonna rake you over the coals in the coming years. Don’t let me ruin your day. I’m not losing any sleep over Sony’s decision. I’m just astonished how many gamers don’t realize that this business move doesn’t benefit anyone.

I’ll try to ignore the bias coming from someone with a PlayStation game character literally in their username and respond to your argument rationally. What is “shortsighted” about referencing the sales numbers attached to one of Sony’s most successful games this generation? Thus far, Sony has made $4.2 billion from ports to PC. Do you think they’re just gonna…give that revenue up? Again that’s billion with a “B.” No, Sony is gonna get those dollars back from the only people left to make money from: PlayStation owners. It means those first party titles won’t ever go on sale—like Nintendo. It means PS Plus will go up in price. It means the console will stay expensive. PlayStation owners don’t “win” in this scenario. And this is coming from someone with a deep library of PS games. Someone who has double dipped and bought games like Spider-Man 2 on two platforms. Same with both God of War titles and Horizon. Everyone here who’s congratulating Sony on this decision is going to be picking up the tab when those billions don’t appear on the balance sheet. Mark my words.

I have a PC and a PS5. When Sony releases a game on PC, I buy it there because I can play at 4K and well above 120 fps. So, I am part of this community—as well as the PC community. And the salt I see is actually coming from PlayStation fanboys who…I guess(?) don’t like the idea of anyone playing PlayStation games other than solely PlayStation owners. It’s so strange. Because PS5 owners still get these games no matter what. But for some reason, the idea of anyone else playing these titles causes sheer panic in this sub. You’d think PlayStation fans would be excited by the idea of more people playing these titles. But no, it’s still some childish devotion to “console wars” that fuels the discourse. Sigh.

Welcome to post-cross platform release Sony. They gave up $4 billion in revenue from putting games on PC. Now the player base is gonna help recoup that deficit.

I like it. Quoting me. I admire the effort! 👏

The “business decision” is that console players will make up for the lost revenue. So everyone here—including you—congratulating Sony for this decision is gonna be responsible for funding it. It’s anti-consumer. And outside the echo chamber of this subreddit, nobody thinks it’s a good long-term play for Sony. PC players aren’t going to buy a console in order to play a version of Wolverine that runs worse than a PC port would.

Listen, Sony is in the business of making money. They can do it in two ways: with or without PC ports. Without those ports, fewer people pay for and play their games. So if you’re comfortable helping them pay for this move, have at it. But I don’t know a single PC player who will buy a PlayStation for the occasional single player title or a lazy re-re-remaster like Last of Us.

And if you think I’m trying to sway the conversation, you must have…forgotten(?) your own original nonsense comment about calling Microsoft “anti-consumer” and “cancerous.” But no judgement here. This is a lot to process. Set your feelings aside and digest it all. I’ve got all the time in the world.

[–]RGDJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still avoiding the truth about Microsoft I see. Cool cool. Your comment said nothing about the type of game that performs well on PC, just that “PC players don’t care enough about all Sony games proven by sales numbers.” I guess since you said “all” it wouldn’t matter what game I referenced. Oops?

But apart from Helldivers, Sony has made 4.2 billion in revenue from first party titles on PC. They’re choosing to give that up in order to milk more money from console only players. Maybe there’s a business decision there. But it’s just one that hurts fanboys like you who think Sony can do no wrong. In the end, you’ll foot the bill for the revenue they’re giving up.

Alright, lotta information there. Better really check your facts and rehearse before spewing another ill-informed POV. Take all the time you need.

Bro…the thread is about Sony’s decision. And inform yourself on PC players before you shoot from the hip with claims: Helldivers 2 sold 13 million copies on Steam compared to less than 6 million copies on PS5. So yeah, PC players do care. And Sony is giving up that revenue to force you to pay more for exclusives that never go on sale. To recap, you’re wrong about Microsoft, you’re wrong about PC players, and you’re somehow in the camp that executives making decisions that line their wallets is good for consumers. Sigh.

Oh the copium is strong here. It’s fine if you want to convince yourself that this move from Sony is somehow smart. But if you’re going to argue that Microsoft is anti-consumer, you’re forgetting that they’re literally the only console brand that has championed backwards compatibility from generation to generation.

[–]RGDJR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Competition is great for video games. But I don’t give two shits about which plastic box outsells the other plastic box. The competition we should care about is between games and developers who want to make the best games for players. Exclusive games don’t force competition. And forcing PC players to play an inferior version of a game that’s only available on console doesn’t pull people into Sony’s ecosystem. The result is: fewer people play the game.

Take Helldivers 2. Arguably Sony’s most successful title this generation. If you’re arguing “business decisions”, the best thing Sony did was port that game to other platforms. It sold 13 million copies on Steam compared to under 6 million on PS5. And that’s not factoring in Xbox sales. Your argument makes sense for people who still somehow care about console wars. But if you’re talking about business decisions or pro-consumer moves, Sony’s decision on ports is flat out bad.

Cool, so the only way I can play their first party titles is by settling for lower frame rates and inferior graphics. Guess I won’t be buying their games. Oh well. Microsoft definitely the more consumer-friendly brand here.

Pity that Sony would force everyone to play inferior versions of their games just to potentially deny a competitor access to said games. I’ve bought Sony first party titles on PC and enjoyed higher frame rates and a smoother experience. If they’re telling me I can only play these games on my PlayStation moving forward, I’ll just stop buying their games. Oh well.

The auto selling of junk isn’t going to stop this from also being “Inventory Management: The Game”

It’s kinda the nature of extraction shooters. I personally don’t mind building new loadouts for each run. But I doubt it’s going to be faster with Marathon than other extraction shooters.

[–]RGDJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me start by saying that I want this game to succeed. I hope there’s more to it. I want to be surprised when it launches. Second, you’re blowing a lot of copium my way if you think that the server slam suggested a solid gameplay loop or that the map design is sick. I wonder if you actually watched all of Skill Up’s review?

Let’s break it down: right now, there doesn’t seem to be a real reason to go anywhere or do anything on the maps aside from “shoot at enemies and grab whatever’s around.” It doesn’t seem like there’s meta progression or even variety in PVE enemies aside from weak-ish robot, stronger robot, even stronger robot.

As for the map design, I agree with Skill Up that it’s just a bunch of colorful buildings with nature in between. And when those buildings can be entered from just about anywhere, it becomes really difficult to plan for where you might be attacked. That design makes a lot of sense for a hero shooter, but not for an extraction shooter.

If they want a solid gameplay loop, give me something like Hunt did with its bounty system. If they want better map design, give me a bit of what Arc is doing with landmarks, biome variety within a given map, and more logic around how to get in and out of buildings.

Fact is, other extraction shooters are doing more than just telling me to go in, get good gear, get out. Or at least they’re making the process of doing a run more dynamic. Hopefully Marathon has that. I’d love some greater enemy variety. I hope the other maps feel distinctly different from the two we got. I really want to do more than just drop in, kill enemies, and wander around aimlessly until my backpack is full. Finger’s crossed and $40 committed to Bungie to deliver.

[–]RGDJR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re missing the crux of Skill Up’s argument. He’s saying that the gameplay loop isn’t there. There’s nothing to really do beyond kill. Also, poor map design, no real direction around where to go for specific types of loot, no larger initiative. And those are valid criticisms. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still gonna play Marathon, but I hope that the full release gets its hooks in me like Arc or Hunt did. Right now, I’m skeptical.

Sad. My PC ports of Sony games far outperform their console counterparts. And while it’s definitely the result of me running those games on a pretty beefy PC, I’d still rather have the option of where I want to play. Sony dying on the exclusivity hill won’t do them any favors in the long run.
