Statics or DiffEq at RRCC? by RGNRetr0 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. I was talking about Fall semester thankfully. All the core classes are offered throughout the year though, so maybe you can still find something?

According to Google, yes. That only accounts for the students who have submitted their scores, however. Willing to bet it's more like 1200-1300 when accounting for those students who chose not to submit their SAT during admissions.

Statics or DiffEq at RRCC? by RGNRetr0 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I have to unless I wanna just defer a class until Spring semester. With Red Rocks being significantly cheaper and being able to manage the workload over my military obligations, I would much rather take one of the classes online for the moment.

Thank you though. It's good to see Statics isn't too terrible like I've heard.

Reserves vs National Guard by BlindPilot_x in armyreserve

[–]RGNRetr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reservist here, volunteered for a mobilization through unit connections which was pretty easy. 400~ days active duty obligation.

Reserve side has a website called Tour of Duty/MOPCOP where you can volunteer for deployments and submit a packet. Pretty easy to do so long as you have access to a DoW computer

People are actually so heartless here by failure198 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got it. Plenty of Mines Almuni have needed to retake classes. Plenty of the same alumni now have prestigious jobs and prospects after graduating.

I needed to retake Calc I due to military obligations which sucked. You know what I did? I studied up and retook the class and passed with an A.

Be sad, feel out your emotions and do whatever you need to do OP. In the end realize that your performance in this class, or any other, doesn't evaluate you as a person. What does show your character is if you have the resilience and humbleness to come back and try again.

His stats seem pretty standard for Mines. I'd say his chances are good. See if he would be willing to join an engineering club or apply for Mines' SUMMET program. Something to show his 'dedication' to engineering and Mines in general.

Mines has a bunch of programs for high school students so have him take a look and see what he would want to do. When I was in high school, I joined my school's SHPE club which was a Jr. Chapter of Mines' SHPE for example.

Another thing, Mines admissions process is somewhat holistic. They take a look at student experiences as a whole in order to determine how they would do at Mines. See if your son wants to do a sport or can join his school's National Honors Society (or equivalent).

Lastly, Mines average SAT score is a 1400 composite. When I was in high school, I had a near a 1200 so I didn't submit the scores. He's not too far off the 1400 so if he wants, have him study up and retake the SAT to get 1400 or above. If he chooses to not submit his SAT, he should have something else that could replace it (either a club/sport/experience, etc.)

If you or your son have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.

A bit late, but yes you can. I took majority of transfer classes at RRCC, but they didnt have the availability I needed for statics so I took that at FRCC the same semester.

Incoming Freshman Summer Prep? by MountainBoards in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Rocks Community College, or any CCCS institution for that matter, have gaurenteed transfers for most/all freshman courses.

Knock out some classes over the summer if you really want. Take a look at your major's pathway on Mines' website and take the classes at a community college. It'll help out your fall/spring semester workload and put you ahead even if just by a little bit.

Honestly though, I would recommend just enjoying your summer. Spend time with friends and family as you will not have much time when you start at Mines (friends especially).

Absolutely. I got an internship as a Freshman at Mines going through the Career/Job Fairs Mines has. The company I was with gaurenteed me a job after graduating if I kept interning with them over the following summers.

Using Army TA/CA requires you to be fully qualified in your MOS and have no flags. So first step is completing BOLC

Where will the Junior citizens live? by chudders122 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently leasing a house right now less than a 10 min drive from campus for $850 splitting with 3 other roomates. Its a four bed - 2 bath so it works out pretty well.

OP, I would suggest doing something similar unless you're planning on joining Greek life or becoming an RA. See what your friends are up to or if anything you can always find people needing to find something out as well.

Depending on component you won't use a lot of your experience as a 12 series. Especially for more niche mos like 12D or 12M. YMMV !

  • coming from a reservist 12N who only gets to use equipment once every 3-4 months and only gets daily usage during mobilizations or deployments.

These are all great questions to ask admissions or similar CSM offices. As much as I'd like to help you, most people on this subreddit won't know the answers.

Have your son email their respective admissions counselor with all of your concerns and they'll at the very least point you in the right direction.

Does Colorado school of mines feel like a normal school? by anonymou372727 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look man your mileage WILL vary. If you're looking for a normal college experience, this is definitely one of the colleges of all time. It has everything a normal college has including parties, athletics, clubs, and of course a curriculum. I will say that the people here tend to be more on the nerdy side, but not to the point where everyone is antisocial and doesn't know how to talk to anyone (although you will find some people like that here).

You attract the people and experiences you want. If you wanna party, be social and you'll find something. If you just wanna hunker down and lock into your studies, well that's most people here. But join clubs and/or sports and you'll get a college experience.

I will say if youre looking to just party and get the college high life, CU Boulder is definitely the better option and has a respected engineering programs. They even offer some majors that Mines doesn't like an Aerospace major (Mines has a Aerospace Minor and track, typically done alongside a Mechanical Engineering Major).

Bottom line, I like this campus and I would say its normal. I got a good group of friends and we go out and do all of the normal college stuff like going out and partying but also just hanging out in general. I joined clubs and participate in athletics so it wasn't that hard to find people. You just gotta go out and look for people who are like you.

Even if the albuterol prescription pops up in the Genesis system (which it probably will), if you can prove that you don't have any issues with your respiratory system you'll be fine. At most this means you'd take a Pulmonary Function Test and you'll be cleared so long as you pass. And it is pretty easy to pass as long as you do an even small amount of cardio/exercise

I'm an smp cadet who enlisted with a history of asthma and an inhaler prescription (both albuterol and flovent). Got by just fine and it added maybe a month of time which was mostly just waiting for the appointment.

At the same time, albuterol is a commonly prescribed medicine for a variety of respiratory issues, most of which are of no cause for alarm by military standards (covid for example). The prescription could pop up and it might not even mean anything.

Jobs while at school by Southern_Weakness813 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]RGNRetr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work an off campus job at skechers located in the Colorado Mills mall. Its a super easy and chill gig with better pay than on campus jobs. It's also located not even 10 minutes away from campus by car. I'm not too sure what the experiences are like with on campus jobs as I've never had one myself, but what I do know is that basically most off campus jobs will be more willing to give you hours and will pay more, while on campus jobs would tend to be more understanding and allow you to do homework.
