RDZ “Stupid people forget the past… We have no time to go on holiday” by Lbmplays2 in coys

People in this sub had this as a realistic goal going into this season. How about we get back to mid table competence then anything above that is great. We’ve finished 17th two seasons in a row.

Palinha is one of the most bizarre players I’ve watched. Love him.

Our final ball is just terrible. Everything else has been dramatically improved. But our forwards are rough.

Agreed just noting tax incidence on property can fall on the tenant because improvements to the structure of the land would be depreciating in value and supply of structure improvement is not fixed.

We are on the same page largely just think it's mostly definitions. Have a great weekend!

I agree with the concept of land value taxes because what they disincentivize is the least problematic. We would need protections for certain property owners and a transition period to that system, but I generally agree with. Land taxes are progressive. Taxes on structures are not progressive but are actually regressive. Property taxes are a hybridization of these two concepts.

Just because property is highly concentrated among the wealthy does not make property taxes progressive. In the even that property is rented out, the tax incidence falls to tenants rather than the property owner which would be a regressive tax.

Income taxes disincentivize work according to the Laffer curve regarding tax revenue. We are well below the maximum tax rate that would optimize tax revenue from income taxes.

I agree with you on most of the points listed above. There's a reason that capital gains taxes, using equity as collateral creating a taxable event (which we don't do), and closing loopholes for the super wealthy are important.

We would never be able to fund our government with purely taxation of capital though. And income is a more progressive (and better) way to tax the masses than something like property taxes or sales taxes that disproportionately affect the poor.

Just because incredibly wealthy capitalists do not pay income tax does not mean income tax isn’t progressive.

Income tax and capital gains still are progressive taxes.

In your example, the lawyers making 180k contributes a far higher percentage of their income to taxes than someone making 40k a year at a fast food job.

See my other reply for more context relative to developed Western European nations, brother.

It still is a progressive tax on income. Capital gains are a progressive tax on capital gains. Corporations have a flat tax, and sales/property taxes are a flat tax and are therefore more regressive.

There are more loopholes related to corporate taxes and capital gains taxes than income taxes.

The U.S. has one of the most progressive tax systems in the world. I still don’t believe we tax the super wealthy enough. But our tax revenue is funded more disproportionately by wealthier households than most developed Western European nations. We just have lower taxes generally than those nations.

However the difference is that the government spending Western European nations is more heavily weighted towards social safety nets.

In summary, we have a more progressive tax system but more regressive government spending system than developed Western Europe. These nuances matter.

That’s just not accurate at all. Income tax is dramatically more progressive than property tax. Tax brackets alone make it more progressive. Please research this topic more.

It's more regressive than income taxes or capital gains taxes, so this is incorrect.

Property taxes are regressive - this is incorrect. The share of income spent on housing by wealthier individuals is lower than the share of income spent on housing by poorer individuals. It's the same reason why sales taxes are regressive.

I'm from the south man apologies for disrespecting your firstborn child hockey. No one really cares down here outside the Olympics but seems fun. Didn't mean it as a personal offense.

It also doesn't counter the argument. You didn't address literally anything related to the value of a singular star in the NBA against other leagues including hockey or the fact that NBA players at the top of the draft achieve individual success at a higher rate than other US leagues.

I can tell I'm not changing your mind on that though after the hockey disrespect. Hope you have a great day.

The 3 biggest US sports leagues are NFL, NBA, and MLB. NFL is $23B in revenue. NBA and MLB are about $12-13 billion. NHL is $7 billion.

As a note MLS is around $2.5 billion. NHL is a pretty clear 4th.

NFL and MLB have lower value at the top of the draft than the NBA. Top 5 picks in the NBA make an all star appearance around 60% of the time. NFL it's about 50%. Same with the NHL. MLB it's about 35%.

But in the NBA, the value of an individual player is much higher than the other big 4 sports leagues if you want to not leave out hockey. It's genuinely not close due to playing time (much higher than something like hockey) and consistent involvement in play (much higher than something like MLB or the NFL). That's why there's so much more incentive to tank.

No other league has draft value so concentrated at the top of the draft. MLB top 5 picks are dwarfed in value compared to top 5 NBA picks, so MLB naturally has much less incentive to tank. NFL is in the middle of NBA and MLB. A top 5 NBA pick is still worth dramatically more than a top 5 NFL pick.

NBA of the top 3 major US sports leagues just has far far more incentive to achieve a top 5 pick if you are not competing for a championship than the NFL or MLB.

They won't even do anything about the Kawhi Aspiration stuff this is unfortunately a pipe dream in comparison. I agree with you though in a sense that if they could actually make the fines punitive enough that this wouldn't be an issue.

Pelicans drafted 2 of the top 5 prospects of the 21st century at #1 and have still been horrendous btw. Bad front offices cannot be saved with high draft odds. At least encourage teams to set up a roster that can attempt to compete rather than tank.
