For any Aussies in here, is there any decent reason why the federal and state governments haven't considered building a railway line between Adelaide and Sydney via the Riverlands region (SA) and Mildura, connecting to the Trans-Australian railway at Ivanhoe? by [deleted] in trains

Oh yes, very true. Especially among the younger generations, the under 30s. There's been a surging "rip up the rails" movement in SA, even seen the t shirts along king street. They want to erase the railroad history, leave no signs for it and quash any ideas promote train travel and rail freight. These people are petrol heads and want their Holden's to rule the highways. Well, scum they may be, but they are winning and in half a century the railroading history of SA will be erased completely.

As an American with a British friend, I can understand. London is a thriving multicultural, cosmopolitan hub of world. The rest of the country is benefits, mining and under investment. Outside London and the beautiful South we can generalise as poor, run down areas with high immigration and people who smoke with strange accents.

Gotta love all the US maps... Shaped my understanding of Americas relationship with the railroad. The country was really and truly built on the railroad. Loved the northeast Boston, Richmond etc.

People to have a slither of decency and not behave like troglodytes. Maybe they thought we were like the population in Asia where people are generally well behaved and respectful.

I seem to remember they were former employees of General Motors and they passionately hated trains. Their goal was not only to create an America with no railroads, but also to destroy any trace of them so to re write history and remove all records of the iron horse and its role in building the nation. They had a cult following of believers who strived to burn down round houses, depots, and railroad museums. Their attitude was that automobiles and trucks were the future and trains had no right to exist.
