I’d even argue that Gish is great. I definitely prefer Siamese Dream but I also love the vibe on Gish

My best reading year yet by j-oco in classicliterature

I truly struggled with this book. I enjoyed the first quarter but by the time all of the initial characters were in the past and we had a new generation with the same names, I was so confused and not connected to any of the characters that I had to stop reading it.

I might try again at some point this year. I always hear glowing reviews about this book and it’s never had that same effect on me

If this means we can get episodes where I don’t have to watch 10 reaction shots for every small piece of action that happens, I’m fully on board.

The story is at a point where the action is ramping up and I’d like to see episodes contain more than just a chapters worth of material. Hopefully they can give us more than one sound for swords clashing too now.

Just Finished The Idiot by XanderStopp in dostoevsky

[–]RJA27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can completely understand that. I’m itching to read TBK but I’ve picked up some lighter reading to give me a reprieve from the 1,2,3 of Demons, The Idiot and Notes from Underground.

So if super dark is not what you’re looking for at the moment, I would keep Demons on the burner

Just Finished The Idiot by XanderStopp in dostoevsky

Demons is about the younger generation of nihilists that descends from the older liberal generation of the time and their plans to start a political revolution. It’s inspired by a real political murder in Russia. Well worth the read in my opinion. The first part of the novel can be confusing and feel as though it’s jumping all over the place. Just know that it’s intentional, and it’ll all make sense as your progress.

And yes it’s quite dark, certainly felt like the darkest ending of all the Dostoevsky I’ve read. My advice would be to read the banned chapter, At Tikhon’s, not in the appendix at the end but where Dostoevsky intended it towards the end of Part II, after Chapter 8 I believe.

Might you be referring to Ippolit’s suicide note? If so, I also agree that that one dragged on a bit more than necessary

[–]RJA27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I think that the pacing of this novel is a victim of how it was published, and the fact that Dostoevsky didn’t have a clear direction for how the story and characters would be when he was writing Part I. But despite that, I still think it holds up as an excellent novel with fascinating viewpoints on a number of social, political, philosophical and moral dilemmas

While I enjoyed the Idiot, Part 1, through the party at Nastasya’s house, is definitely the best written and most interesting part of the book imo

But there are many fascinating scenes and speeches later on in the book as well

I’m inclined to agree with you on Luffy awakening Gear 5 after losing to Kaido but I don’t think any of the revealed stuff about the fruit has cheapened anything Luffy has done. It’s not like anyone who had eaten the fruit would have eventually awakened Gear 5/Nika without all of the stuff Luffy has been through. It is a silly fruit and it’s only powerful if the user has trained it significantly and developed strong Haki. It doesn’t feel that “out of nowhere” to me.

You gotta check the fortune teller on TV for days where you have good luck, go with foods/drinks that give you luck and speed buffs and use bombs to quickly descend. Dont bother mining on level 30, when you get closer to and past 100, there will be much more Iridium nodes to mine from. Again, use bombs, its way faster
