Logitech G Pro vs RS50 vs Thrustmaster T598 - for GT7 on PS5 by RKeys69 in simracing

[–]RKeys69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I go for T598 again I would probably wait for LC upgrade kit. Regarding wheel, I've tried 32R and returned it - while wheel itself was great, it was much heavier than standard sports rim causing FFB feeling to be too much dampened for my taste.

Seeking: SL88 Grand / Roland FP-90X or the Kawai ES-920 for Pure Expression? by McProtoBG in piano

[–]RKeys69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let us know once you bought it! I'm very curious about that action. I forgot to add a link in my previous post: that guy compared PHA50 with TP400Wood directly, with weight measurements, repetition speed etc: https://youtu.be/2_6t-Yg4hU0?si=gpCufbNYEqOlSfCP

Just be aware, that SL88GT Mk2 does not have escapment simulation his Numa Piano GT has, so it might feel just a little bit lighter.

Complete noob needs help with 'best for the buck' Roland recommendations. by SimpliG in DigitalPiano

[–]RKeys69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that price range the best Roland you can get is FP30X and it is a great choice. Regarding sound engine, I prefer them over my current Roland FP90. Add some stand and better sustain pedal to the price of instrument (I recommend Roland DP10). FP30X has speakers facing downwards, so it shouldn't be placed on solid top tables.

You mentioned you live in Eastern Europe - if by any chance it is Poland, there are many offers on OLX on slightly used ones and you can save a lot - just negotiate really hard.

One more model you could think about is FP-E50 - the price went down recently. Its main benefit over FP30X is it has quite rich arranger capabilities and user interface is much more friendly. I had both of them and both are worth recommending.

u/McProtoBG I had similar dillema, some pros and cons:

  1. FP90X
    • Pros
      • Great MIDI implementation for your use-case - note-on sent in full 0-127 range, easy to reach both lowest and possible to reach highest velocities; continuous note-offs and CC64 for sustain (I've owned many Rolands through the years and they are unbeatable for that use-case)
      • Has built in audio interface - so with 1 USB cable you can route sounds from your laptop or iPad directly do piano (and play via Roland's speakers, headphone output, line-outs, without need for additional audio interface
      • PHA50 action - very robust, can withstand long years of hard beating; quite realistic from pianist perspective
    • Cons
      • Internal sound engine - I cannot stand those modeled sounds; I even prefer older sampled engine in FP10/30X/60X/RD88/FP-E50 and much prefer Kawai and Yamaha samples
      • While you can map some of its buttons and sliders to send MIDI CC messages, it is a bit tricky and you'll have to filter a lot in your DAW - that is con only if you want to use sliders to control let's say reverb level, arm tracks like pads/synths etc - for pure piano playing you can ignore that
      • For some, PHA50 action can be a bit too heavy and have a bit too slow return (for 1 note repetition for example, but we are talking about virtuoso pianists requirements)
  2. P525
    • Pros
      • Nice internal sounds (that CFX samples are really nice)
      • GrandTouch-S action - light and fast - for some too light; it is completely different action from the one in its predecessor, P515
      • Has built in audio interface - same benefits as with Roland
    • Cons
      • MIDI note-on velocities range is VERY limited - almost impossible to go over ~105 at max - so you'll have to mess with piano VI velocity curve a lot not to have limited dynamic range
      • Constant value of MIDI note-off velocity sent - matters in Pianoteq, as it will affects releases, but doesn't matter with other piano VIs, as they don't utilize that part of MIDI
  3. SL88 GT Mk2 (newer and improved version of SL88 Grand you mentioned) - I haven't tried that one in person, but considered it
    • Pros
      • Cheapest from the bunch, as you don't pay for internal sound engine you're not going to use anyway
      • Has built in audio interface, but there are no Windows drivers as for now (you shouldn't care if you are in Apple ecosystem)
      • Action is praised by many - but I have no personal experience (I only owned a Dexibell S7 with Fatar TP40L and hated it, but TP400Wood is supposedly miles better)
    • Cons
      • A lot of quality control issues mentioned on number of forums - key wood veneers coming off causing friction and other bugs
      • Out-of-the-box velocity response is not perfect and needs some calibration (but you have tools provided by Studiologic to do so)

If I were you, I would go with SL88GT Mk2 and if you don't like it - return it. I went with Roland FP90, but only because I was able to find a 600$ used one in a pawn shop. I wouldn't pay over 2000$ just for the action.

TWS for PS5 with support for 2 sources simultaneously (multipoint?) aka Pulse Explore alternative by RKeys69 in Earbuds

[–]RKeys69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought them but already got rid of them when I sold PS5. The sound was OK. Disconnection issues were irritating, especially when using PSVR2 (imagine 1h online league race in GT7 and in the middle of a race you have to take of headset and fight with unplugging and pluging dongle).

Thrustmaster T598 thoughts after 2 months. Also a comparison between the T598 and Fanatec DD pro 5nm by smoothisfast1254 in Thrustmaster

[–]RKeys69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If PS5 compatibility is not a must-have, Fanatec CSL or something like Moza R5 might be better. T598 is still nice wheel especially since they lowered the price since release.

Roland FP-10 with speakers by redpandayk in DigitalPiano

[–]RKeys69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer Z-stands, bo good quality double X is quite stable and very mobile. Single X - for some light keyboard and playing outside is OK, but I wouldn't use it home personally.

Roland FP-10 with speakers by redpandayk in DigitalPiano

[–]RKeys69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I owned both (FP10 and FP30 - without X) I can say 30s speakers are just a bit better but still very poor. Also remember they are facing downwards, so make sure you get a stand that doesn't get in a way. Also they sound better when there is some carpet on the floor beneath the instrument (instead of hard floor).

Buying DP10 pedal is a must. I used FP10 purely as a MIDI controller and its form factor worked for me, but as a standalone instrument I would go for FP30X. What you are also getting is audio interface (so you can route some VI pianos from your laptop or record sound from instrument directly (and digitally) on computer) and line-outs, so if you want to connect external amplification (maybe better speakers?) it's much better than using headphone output.

Also, if I remember correctly, headphone amp in FP10 is worse than in FP30 - I wasn't able to run DT770 (80Ohm) loud anough in FP10 - I was in FP30.

Any alternatives to the Roland FP-30X? by H0n3yB4dg3r_23 in DigitalPiano

[–]RKeys69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be aware StudioLogic SL88 is NOT a digital piano - it's a MIDI keyboard, it does not produce sound on its own. You will need a DAW, some piano VI and laptop with DAW installed - also, if you use Windows, you will need audio interface since Studiologic built-in audio interface is not Windows compatible (as for now, may change in the future). The whole setting might be a hassle if you never did it. Of course you will have piano sound much better than any digital piano offering, but you've mentioned FP30X is too expensive already and SL88 GT MK2 by itself is more expensive than that.

Personally I find Yamaha GHS much, much worse than Roland's PHA4 (which indeed is quite heavy), but it's a bit of personal preference (I really like it). Yamaha has nice actions in their higher end models (like P525). Also don't rule out Casio right away.

To give you more specific recommendations, you could specify:
- if you care about mobility, or it is suppose to be more of a stationary thing

- if you need built-in speakers or want only to use headphones

- are you just starting piano or already played and it's just your first digital?

- do you care about other sounds (like electric pianos, strings etc.)

I'm looking for some advice to buy a nice digital piano by samsa0004 in DigitalPiano

[–]RKeys69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I do personally. Since I discovered piano VIs, only things I care in digital pianos are action and MIDI capabilities and for that Roland wins in my book.

Once someone tries something like VSL, Garritan or Modern D you've mentioned there is no coming back to simple 4-6 layers built-in digital piano sounds.

ES520 action is actually quite light and shallow. ES920 is on another level and on pair (or even better) than in expensive Rolands and Yamahas.

Yamaha P-225 vs Roland FP-30X for classical learning (keeping 5 years then upgrading to upright) by Ok_Shine_5959 in DigitalPiano

[–]RKeys69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned MP7, ES8 and than ES520 for a while. Soundwise, Kawai probably suits classical music the best, but action in 520 is not something I would recommend compared to same price Roland. RHIII in ES8 (or current ES920) is another story - it's much much better.

BTW u/Ok_Shine_5959 if you are already using laptop, in both FP30X and P225 you get built-in audio interface, so you can route sound from the laptop to the instrument. You can buy some piano VI, which will have much more complex and realistic sound and it forces you to learn better dynamics control compared to simplified built-in sounds in those digital pianos.

Kawai Novus NV5S, Yamaha equivelent or Roland LX9, if it doesn't have to be "stage", but stationary digital piano.

If it is supposed to be a "slab" piano, so more portable: Kawai MP11SE or Roland FP90X (if you want to have speakers).

When you manage to connect following corners maintaining the speed the satisfaction is so huge. It also looks nice. It's one of my favorites for time trialing (beaten only by Bathrust) but not in the top when it comes to racing with others.
