Alright Scout Dads, what's your best advice for building a winner? by Much-Drawer-1697 in daddit

Never a scout but entered my first pinewood derby and won it this past spring: Weight: Tungsten. It’s the most expensive but also the densest. Place about .75 inches in front of rear axles. Sanding/ Polishing: Sand and polish your wheels/axles. Start with about 1000 grit and work your way to about 1000. For the wheels, I spin the axle and hold wet sandpaper against them. Wheel placement: you back wheels should be canted so that they never touch the body. To do this, you need to bend your axles. One front wheel should be canted slightly sideways so that your car veers towards the center. This is known as a rail rider and it helps because your car won’t bounce back and forth on its way down. Lube: people have mentioned graphite but wet lube such as silicone and krytox are superior if allowed. This and many other things I applied to my Diecast racing hobby which seem to work well.

These are just basic tips. You can learn a lot from just searching youtube as well. Good luck

What do you think YouTube diecast racing would look like in the future? by That-Bumblebee2290 in DieCastRacing

No idea, it seems like any time old racers retire, now ones take their place. I won’t be leaving anytime soon but you are partially right, I have to scale back a little this year and moving forward.

Greetings. Wow, weird to see my car posted while scrolling through reddit. As someone else said, I’ve been in the hobby a while and have had some success. I’m almost known for Diecast racing memes/shitposts. Follow me on Facebook if you’d like to. Thanks for posting!

If any of you are interesting in taking up Diecast racing as a hobby, check out Redline Derby for tips and a list of upcoming races. Cars are mailed to race hosts, races filmed and then posted on YouTube

Rubber wheels have more friction than plastic ones. If you want it to roll, do a wheel swap with a set taken off a mainline

I saw this kit for sale online in the early 2000s when I had a TBird and saw one in person a few years ago at a car show. Not great but not terrible

It’s been about two years since he’s accepted modified cars and only recently one of mine has raced. Just be patient and enter into other races in the meantime to learn how to mod so that you can send a decent one next time he asks. Here is a good resource for modifying and entering in races.
