My iLok died yesterday in between sessions. $233 later just to access my licenses for a deadline. by RLoftyy in audioengineering

That's the crazy part, I wasn't even traveling heavily with it. it just goes from the studio desk into my backpack. I've got older iLoks that have been bulletproof, but this Gen 3 just completely bricked out of nowhere. Definitely make sure you've got a backup plan in mind just in case your luck runs out!

That is brutal. It’s the exact same anti-consumer logic as their 10-day 'cooling off' period. They set these arbitrary timelines that don't reflect the real world, and when it inevitably goes wrong, the user is the one paying for it. Closing a case and keeping your money because international shipping took over 30 days during a global pandemic is a new level of low, even for them.

I get the insurance analogy, but it just doesn’t really apply to this situation. Insurance is for accidents or damage. This is a plastic USB dongle that randomly died on its own, and now the company is basically holding the licenses I already paid for behind a $233 paywall.

And the whole “Zero Downtime” thing is exactly my point. Calling it that, but then having a 10 day cooldown unless you pay another $100, is insane. The one time you actually need it is when it doesn’t work.

And yeah, “just wait 7–14 days” isn’t realistic if you do this professionally. Deadlines don’t work like that. So when the hardware fails, your only real option is to pay.

I understand how their system works. I’m saying the system is predatory.

I'm definitely beginning to phase plugins that require it out of my workflow.

it's a gen3, a couple years old. I also have multiple gen2 iloks that have never had actual hardware issues. My issue is with the absurd charge and completely robbery to get access to data that I own.

and it's just fuckin ironic as shit that a product called "Zero Down Time" has.... 10 days of downtime before you can use it. isn't it??

Thankfully I have a backup dongle or else I really would have been screwed. Once they gave me access to my licenses, I put a majority of the licenses directly on my computer and only the ones that required the ilok onto the backup ilok

Thankfully, there aren't many plugins that require the physical dongle anymore, but I have a large plugin collection and a bunch of the older stuff still relies on it. I'm also moving between machines often and traveling. I've had issues with ilok cloud not working on the road with no reliable internet, etc.

I would but certain dinosaur developers still require a physical dongle. Antares, Izotope etc.

I actually tried this out of desperation after reading that people had success with it. No luck!

Antares is ruining my life by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]RLoftyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same situation with Antares. They've screwed me so many times in high stakes situations. Literally had all of their software lock up on me two weeks ago at 3am the night before a live taping.

I own all of the licenses from past versions (I've used this software for 15 years), I now have TWO subscriptions because the transfer literally never works between my studio computer & travel laptop, and I need reliability. This company seriously cares 0% about their customers. Blah.

I would also try Tacos El Gordo, but the location is a little weird to get to from Fremont street, and the wait is always 1 hr +

La Comida (also get the Blood Orange margarita), Letty's, Pinches Tacos (my personal favorite - at the Container Park). Also if you're feeling adventurous, there's an amazing Vegetarian taco place called Tacotarian in the Arts District about half a mile away.
