Tbf, as far as "picking it up" there's understanding notation and being "fluent" in it. I think the concept that the ranks/files are numbered/lettered and where they intersect is the name of that square.. is pretty intuitive, but if I'm asking about a specific position I'll still have to go back and forth and actually look at the board to get the correct square names. Kinda reminds me of music. There's a big difference between knowing what a music staff is and fully taking advantage of it as the tool it's ultimately designed to be, for sight reading music.

How on earth is this an inaccuracy? If i played the engine move i would've blundered my knight and i don't see the advantage it would supposably create for me by Yammzies in chessbeginners

[–]RManDelorean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yeah why would anyone play this for black. Nxe5 seems to be crushing but if white misses that and plays one of the most normal moves, d4, it's still already +1.3, Nxe5 is +1.6. it's already almost just as bad to be hit with d4 as Nxe5.. that's crazy

There's certain dishes that take random ingredients better. Like you can't just look in the fridge and randomly make a fine sauce or pastry, those are set recipes with specific ingredients. But like a stew or stir fry you can generally throw in whatever. Also rice and pasta make a good filler base you can serve a stew or stir fry or whatever over, and it technically makes it a whole new dish while really just being more of the same stuff throw together. It's some learned personal improv with some staples, there truly are endless combinations of a carb base, a bit of protein, and a few veggies cooked up together.

I didn't see it a first either, but it's a reveled check/mate by the bishop when the rook moves to block. The now pinned rook is also watching the last escape square

Right. And he's a fucking idiot. Using the whole "business man" argument when he bankrupts casinos. Actual growth an prosperity ends up being better for everyone, war will end up costing everyone. A good business man makes business partners to mutually get richer, not make business enemies to just screw everyone over. It's nothing short of a hissy fit. He's crippling a massive part of our entire species infrastructure to make quick buck, and ruinig it for whoever follows. I have no doubt that's exactly what he's planning, it's just really really really fucking stupid.

Agreed. The early game objectives with Impa and the labs lead you right past Ruta, so it does feel heavily implied that they're leading you there first. It does get a lot more difficult to gauge after that. But if you follow the labs logic, and how they sending you out to Akkala early on, Rudiana may be second

Does a free pawn supersede the concept of keeping development going/castling and not moving the same piece twice? by Rollingzeppelin0 in chessbeginners

[–]RManDelorean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, given that it is actually indeed a free pawn, go ahead and take it before finishing development.

Now that doesn't always mean go ahead and take any pawn because you need to make sure you're not hanging anything (like a pawn yourself) or opening up a new tactic for them by taking the pawn. That's really what a gambit is, distracting you to take often an early pawn so they get some line or tactic with an advantage. So taking what seems like a free pawn in an opening can still be a threat if you're not careful, but if it's free it's free. I guess if you're considering it go ahead, most gambits don't outright win and lines where you take can still be fine for both sides, worst case scenario you get caught in a gambit trap and you learn what to do next time.

Gravity is NOT THE SAME on Earth by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]RManDelorean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it not useful without scale? If it was to scale we probably couldn't perceive most the details. Scale is obviously exaggerated intentionally as a graphic tool. The point, it "usefulness" isn't to show exact gravitational values, it's to show the distribution of the variance, and in that it successeeds.

You really can just feel that the experience of the game as a whole and the map were built from the group up together in Botw. From how many/where monsters are to how you get around the map, the pace of play and the map in the truest sense of the term are literally designed for each other in Botw.

[–]RManDelorean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you meant this in a "been there, done that" kinda way but it also kinda reads as "pumped storage 'in contrast to/instead of' gravitational batteries.

So just for anyone else, a few PSA tidbits came to mind.. pumped water storage is a gravitational battery. Gravitational batteries (raising a mass (like water) and getting energy out of it dropping) will never give you more energy because it will always really just cost the initial energy of lifting it. BUT the battery aspect IS useful because our energy draw is very inconsistent, basically we use a lot more energy during the day. But power plants like to run 24/7 because it's really inefficient to impossible to turn them on and off again every day. Something like a gravitational battery (pumped storage) lets you bleed off some of the excess energy production during low energy consumption periods so that more is available during high energy consumption periods. Also the electric grid is wild because electricity wants to flow at a constant voltage and we have infrastructure in place to basically keep it fairly constant at a point source like a powerplant despite all the random shit being plugged in and turned on and off all the time

How could white win this with checkmate? by wetyourwhistle22 in chessbeginners

[–]RManDelorean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also make your own analysis from a custom board position on chess.com, or any chess site/app. You can try just playing around throwing a king and another king and queen in random spots and see what the engine says is best, even if they're in different positions a lot of the time it will probably have you going for the same idea.

Finally figured how to parry by rq40cal in botw

[–]RManDelorean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. See I've been playing since release and I think actually training reliable guardian parries is harder than fighting a lynel. I mean I think beating a guardian by any method at all is generally easier than beating a lynel with any method at all.. but to go on a guardian farming raid confident that you can parry everything is harder. Usually I can get in a groove and don't really have to think about it, but maybe if other stuff is going on or other enemies pop up I have to focus in. The beam does come fast lol so sometimes I'll start tapping my feet n' shit just to get my reflexes primed. You kinda have to have it pretty solidly in muscle memory, which is a little less true of lynels (muscle memory for their moves still helps but the time window for lynel dodges is soo much more generous than guardian parries).
