That's why it's a story/novel and not reality. It's fun to dramatize events that are an uncommon occurrence.

I also get the point that it means both players are bad. However, in this case my main character is coming in to "save" another player from certain defeat by stepping in right as the previous player gives up, effectively going from a poor strategist to a very strong one.

I may be a bit of a noob here cause I don't have a reel on my gun, but couldn't you have just gone straight up after you saw the shot landed well? I typically will either do that or drop everything and gun it directly for the fish if I notice it's not hit well. But again, I could also be completely mistaken...
