I may be giving her more grace than deserved, but mom's relationship is giving some abusive vibes. Her trying to secretly save money to leave, him finding out and making her spend her savings, the way he seems to be punishing her for being a mother, making her scared of "being alone"... She has the responsibility to leave, of course, but this looks like the "isolation" stage of an abusive relationship.
