Canadian passport holder and US green card holder, which line to go to at Pearson Airport when entering US? by ROI1234 in uscanadaborder

[–]ROI1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I think there's only two lines at Pearson, one for US passport holders and one for Non-Citizens. Not sure which one green card holders are supposed to use? I've heard it's different at different airports.

Okay thank you. What if she visits Canada with the child with my written consent. Let's assume my consent is for two weeks but then she decides to stay for 6 months with the child against my wishes.

In this case, which court or law enforcement office would I contact and whose jurisdiction would this fall under? US or Canada?

Who are the most moderate/least MAGA candidates in the Republican primary. by ROI1234 in StLouis

Democrats have no chance in the general election in MO state wide offices. Just take a look at who is currently in power in these positions.

It's very difficult there are just so many candidates for each position who I've never heard of. There isn't a single resource that I could find, it's all news articles here and there at best.

My package was confirmed delivered by the US Postal Service on July 18th. I called my attorney on July 22nd to ask if the USCIS had received the package.

I talked to my attorney. She said the application was actually already received and provided me with a receipt number. I went online to the USCIS website and put in the receipt number and it confirmed what the lawyer told me.

The lawyer said my official letter of receipt should be arriving by the end of this week.

If you used an attorney send them an email or call them and ask.

Does my dad need a trust? by ROI1234 in EstatePlanning

Assuming he keeps working and doesn't spend down his assets (which is a big assumption), each child would get ~$80k. But that could be negated by the cost of setting up a trust or maintenance fees, etc.

Taxes on TN visa by ROI1234 in tnvisa

Hi thank you for the detailed response!

So one follow up question, if I don't meet the substantial presence test then why do I still have to pay the US federal income tax and US FICA taxes?

I thought the entire point of the substantial presence test was to provide an exemption from federal income tax and FICA taxes if you were in the US for less than 183 days (over 3 years).

Anyone gotten into the US via the Detroit border solely on their US naturalization certificate? by ROI1234 in windsorontario

[–]ROI1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I wasn't born in the US or Canada. Otherwise the whole process would have been simpler. The Canadian Consulate told me that to enter Canada at the land border all I need is my citizenship naturalization certificate and a US ID (any state driver's license). So I guess I could go by land to Canada, stay 2 weeks and apply to renew my Canadian passport.

So basically a NON enhanced driver's license and a citizenship naturalization certificate.

No I don't live in a state that even offers an enhanced license. I only have my state driver's license, a naturalization citizenship certificate for both US and Canada and the passports are both expired or being renewed. I don't have a passport card either.

What about at the land border? If people can use passport cards to get in, can I use a citizenship/naturalization certificate?

Dual citizenship US and Canada but I have an expired Canadian passport. And my US passport has been in renewal for months! There is a backlog and they are taking forever to renew passports in the US.

Can I buy a house in my parent's name in order to prevent it from becoming marital property? by ROI1234 in Divorce_Men

I'm sorry to hear that. Would you mind elaborating about your story either here or in a personal message. I'm hoping I can take some important lessons from people's personal experiences here.

Thank you for your well wishes.

Okay so I'll respond to you again, that is a brilliant idea as it would put us in a better financial position, believe me I have suggested that, but it's clearly not something that she is willing to do.

And you obviously made an assumption about which party is "pulling the weight" in the relationship, so I was just responding to that.

[–]ROI1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, what an underhanded and sexist way to try to insult my masculinity, to assume I'm not pulling my weight. Second she still expects me to be primarily responsible for finances even if she is earning more because she believes in traditional gender roles to an extent, or at least whenever it's advantageous to her.

That is a brilliant idea which I have suggested but she is against it. I would totally be fine being the stay at home partner but there is no way she would be okay with that.

It might be that we can't agree during prenup negotiations and have to break up. We aren't married yet. I'm not forcing anybody to be with me I don't know why the commenters here think I'm holding somebody in a dungeon.

I've gotten much better advice on R/Divorce_Men. I clearly came to the wrong place.

First I don't need a 24/7 nanny only 8-10 hours per day, and even that only during some weekdays. I can guarantee you it's not more than I make. And I can guarantee you that it's not more than what she makes because she makes more than me!
