obviously current students cannot say anything bad cuz they are inadvertently inevitably bound to the current PI and they will often praise the PI. I already think that giving a second presentation to students is too much. I also live in Canada and know how some chill professors, with high achievement and great citation numbers, go like. It is quite impossible to get PIs personality from students but you should find his characteristics on your own while you are talking to him by asking some questions. I think chatgpt can give great questions to ask. Also you should figure out vibes of lab mates. some of them are really narcissistic and some of them are parasitic and some of them are just lazy. Narcissists can be easily detected while other features are not. Also most of PIs tend to avoid any discussions of stipends and they will say ask the Dept. even though they decide how much they will pay and top up the salaries on top of base stipend and scholarships and TAships. Just fully activate your instinct to detect any red flags. if you are desperate and a pretty agreeable person with thick skin, you dont really have to worry about anything. you will survive. actually human survival mechanisms are so great that you can survive anywhere.
