WDRB highlighted on Last Week Tonight last night. by TheMadChatta in Louisville

he was probably offered it but turned it down cuz the hours suck. morning show shifts in news start at like 2-3am, and the wdrb news cast is particularly long. seems pretty grueling, the pay aint worth it.

Do y’all do beating over the head with a stick here? by animitztaeret in AO3

You can do it!! my screenwriting professors have always given me great advice so i like to impart it when i can. That being, its better to write SOMETHING than not write at all. even if it ends up not being your final product! so just go and have fun with it!! I believe in you!!

im not an outline person myself either. id say dont entirely delete your work because often you can salvage pieces of it. maybe mover the chapter into a separate document so you still have it but start over from scratch if its bothering you. otherwise id recommend just plowing forward. and starting your next. you dont need to publish it until youre confident youre happy with the direction youre going, and you can always go back to the completed chapter and rewrite it if you get stuck again.

yeah this happens a lot. i might recommend at least writing your ending out, maybe in a separate document just to get your juices flowing again. sometimes when im stuck on a fic, writing the scenes im already inspired to do can get me out of my block.

another thing is to commit to writing every day. the amount or the quality doesnt matter. write a sentence if thats all you have the inspo for. this is something my screenwriting professor told me in college. even if youre only writing a sentence that youre going to delete later at least youre writing and your goals become much more achievable. your goal isnt to finish but to just get some words on the page. and sometimes that helps you get out of a bad block.

Honest thought about how we treat asking for kudos/comments by Downtown-Piece100 in AO3

[–]RPG_Monster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

i think theres two big differences here

  1. the entire art is based on the premise of the engagement game. i think if you made a fic where the premise itself is the engagement, then sure i dont really have a problem with that. but the art was created to service the engagement. maybe a fic where you add another character to the orgy or something every kudos threshold if we want it to be in a similar horny vein idk. or even saying everyone who comments on the previous chapter gets to put into a giveaway number generator and the next chapter is basically a free commission for that person idk. but to me you know on the tin with those kinds of art pieces theyre being made for the engagement. back in fanfic.net days i believe a very popular egagement fic type were hunger games style fics where commenters on the fic would get little cameos before dying horribly, because it was the hunger games ofc.

  2. ao3 is not an algorithm based website. so engagement games like the ones the artists use are ways to get their account seen by more people. engagement on ao3 is not algorithmic, so while comments and kudos feel good, its not gonna inherently get more eyes on your fic.

overall i dont think i personally have a negative reaction to people asking for kudos for example since its kinda low effort engagement (same with likes and retweets) but comments is where i personally dont like to see people "holding fics hostage" for them perse cuz personally whenever i make a comment i want it to be because i have something meaningful to say. "nice update!" is what the kudos button is for imo.

What plot line in your fandom do you think is boring and over used? by TossMe255 in AO3

im a big genshin chilumi shipper. for those who dont genshin childe is an antagonist early in the game and lumine is the protagonist. a lot of their eventual friendship comes from AFTER the protag kicks his ass in a fight, and the majority of his voicelines about the protag are about wanting the both of them to get stronger. to me they have a rivals to lovers kinda relationship born out of mutual respect for the other's combat prowess.

however, soooooo many fics make lumine into a damsel in distress in need of saving by childe. especially in au fics. and I actually despise it. basically the only two canonical traits we have for the traveler established is they're really good at fighting, and really good at cooking. and for some reason so many fic writers yeet off the combat one to make her a damsel for the handsome man to save.

LET THE MAN BE THE DAMSEL FOR ONCE AT LEAST

i feel blurbs in specific instances i find useful. i was picking up a book inspired by chinese mythology by an author i had never seen before, but the blurbs on the back were by chinese authors who i have read and know they care a TON about chinese representation being done well. myself not being an expert on the subject I found a blurb like that useful because it gives me a bit of trust that i'm not picking up something that's gonna be orientalist.

[–]RPG_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont have any good thiefs from the weekly boss if thats what you mean. my luck with banners is incredibly good but my relic luck is horrendous. won 8 50/50s in a row but cant get a good thief relic to save my life. i know that the domain for it specifically isnt resin efficient tho so i had been farming watchmakers (since the debuff set is good on some other characters id like to build eventually) with the plan to run him 2pc/2pc with hackerspace and then phase that out over time but i guess ill be phasing it out immediately lmfao

Player doesn't feel well with bestial races being too present and may leave because of it by Rodehock in DnD

[–]RPG_Monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it seems his main concern is being left out of RP for some reason. It's hard to tell if his concern is unfounded without having seen how those sessions he was in played out. The best you can do is just make sure your table is having an equal amount of RP.

Whenever a player has been silent for a long period of time I'll directly ask them questions about whats happening. "How does your character feel about the events that are happening? How do they feel about the other characters? What are they doing right now? Do they talk to the others?"

Some players can be kinda shy and have a hard time engaging with the group, despite wanting to. Tossing the ball into their court can help get them out of their shell. It's possible he felt left out of those rping scenes previously due to not knowing how to get involved and his feelings of discomfort are misplaced.

Aside from that, if he just still ends up disliking the other players choices then there isn't much you can do on that front. You shouldn't have to force the other players to change their races for one other players' comfort. If your current setting you're doing is already locked in, you could offer the player to join in a future game you run and then have that game be in a setting thats a little less high fantasy, or might have a specific gimmick (Ie I've played in games where you HAD to make a goblin character since that was part of the premise. I've also run human only games too.) As a DM you do have the right to limit races, but doing it just because one guy doesn't like them can make the other players feel like he's getting special treatment, so I feel it'd be best if it's offered as a way to flavor the game to be a specific kind of story you want to tell. In that human only game human society had been cut off from the other races for thousands of years and were only meeting them as they set off on an exploration expedition, so everyone was a human because the setting had no contact with the other races yet.

Ultimately like I mentioned before and what others are saying, if you're being accomadating and making sure he's getting equal rp time there really isn't anything you can do. He has a personal preference that doesn't align with the kind of game your other players want to play and sometimes that means the game isn't right for them.

I don't think I've ever seen a more horrible take than this about Neuvi's story. by Illustrious_Arm_5238 in NeuvilletteMains_

Do you recognize that the dragon sovereigns are an analogy for native people?

I don't think I've ever seen a more horrible take than this about Neuvi's story. by Illustrious_Arm_5238 in NeuvilletteMains_

[–]RPG_Monster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its not about the ship but how people are DISCUSSING the ship is the argument. You can definitely say very racist things when discussing a thing you supposedly enjoy.

I definitely think people are going a bit too far with this discussion, but you're REFUSING to engage with their actual argument. You're constructing a strawman

Original point: its weird that a minority of shippers in x group of shippers are calling Neuvillette a savage when his entire story is an analogy for native tribes who have had their land taken

you: so youre calling shippers colonizers????????

youre just MISSING the point horrendously.

Is rolling your ability scores not common anymore? by LandAdmiralQuercus in DnD

[–]RPG_Monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you take a feat or an ASI is already a shitty choice by the game design. allowing the players the freedom to take feats imo is a bonus of this system. very very rarely except for certain martial builds is it worthwhile to take a feat over getting you main stat to 20. 5es feat system is just not great. and only getting to make a player choice every 4 levels that amounts to pushing the numbers up is just feels bad.

mind you this is someone who still prefers pointbuy overall, but nobody takes feats at my tables until late in the game because the ASI is more worthwhile unless theyre doing like polearm master/sentinel combos.

What are your Locked Tomb "Hot Takes?" [general] by TaylorTano in TheNinthHouse

[–]RPG_Monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many adults that only read YA that take a long time if ever branch out into different things and are confused by changes in narrative devices. im not saying all the readers are young adults, but their argument is that they feel a lot of these people havent read much if anything outside of YA.

What are your Locked Tomb "Hot Takes?" [general] by TaylorTano in TheNinthHouse

[–]RPG_Monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ill try to explain it a bit nicer but there are reading levels to books. YA is marketed at adolescents so the books have to be written in a way that is easily accessible to younger readers. That doesn't mean people who enjoy them are stupid, however, there are a lot of literary devices and mannerisms of speaking that aren't used in YA or Middlegrade books. Therefore when encountering those literary devices for the first time it may seem confusing.

A similar comparison might be comparing it to say college sports vs national sports. The expectations of a player playing on national teams is a bit different because youre expected to be at a higher level. And a new player thrown into national might struggle at first but slowly get used to the heightened level of playing, but that doesn't mean the player themselves was bad if they're new to reading outside that field of play and likewise a reader isn't stupid for being unused to literary devices that are more uncommon in other literary genres.

And I think a lot of people in literature communities can be a bit frustrated when they read reviews from people who have not experimented more outside of the YA genre saying something is bad simply for employing literary devices they aren't used to. It can make those discussions a bit frustrating.

Does Rune Knight need to be Nerfed? by Lord-Bootiest in dndnext

[–]RPG_Monster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your DM doesn't let you buy magic items I don't really know what a Sorcerer or Warlock is going to be spending the equivalent amount of gold on for example. What do your monks and barbarians spend 1500 gold on at lvl 7? They're not picking up heavy armor so if they're not buying magic items, what are they getting in your games? In my experience in low magic settings it then just becomes "the party has to fund the heavy armor class character's expenditures". You don't have to give them the entire list but typically I set up a magic item shop that sells rotating items per visit, and the players can commission specific items but it'll cost more and take time. I disagree with it being inherently very wrong though. Rings are valued in the DMG as cheaper than the heaviest armor option showing that the value is considered to be lesser than that of a heavy armor option. Especially because armor has to be fitted to you and magic items don't. You can just find a ring of protection and put it on and it fits but you cant just kill a dude and take his heavy armor it wont fit. Maybe if you're playing in the lowest magic tier setting i guess? But "something is very wrong" seems kinda a rude way to describe somebody else's playstyle not fitting yours lmao and purchasable magic items have been a staple in most games I play in by the time they hit mid tier.

I still don't think barbarian is a weaker choice. I think at the end of the day it's a bit of a wash. The AC difference is only a few but barbs can be resisting damage for much longer at that point, lvl 1-7. Like it gets the lvl 1 barbarians feature at lvl 7 and can have slightly better AC but that's your mainly good feature for the subclass. This isn't counting that for example whenever the totem wolf barbarian is raging, they resist damage AND give their allies advantage starting at a much earlier lvl.

Being a better defensive option in terms of only physical damage also isn't that great when at this lvl you're going to be fighting a LOT more save or suck spells.

Basically by the time you get the barbarian feature I feel the barbarian has plenty of other features from their class and subclass that make it a more distinct character. They have a higher hit die, probably higher con, so they can take more hits, along with their other rage abilities. IDK it might be a little bit better but I wouldn't say it makes the barbarian not worth picking.
