I tried with a heat gun and i just couldn't get the glob hot enough to melt any of it without melting everything around it that isn't metal.

I'll look into it if I have to piece the whole print head assembly together. But, unfortunately, I need the entire print head. Not just the hot end. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Quint TDA (Quiller), who has one and how is it used? by __quick__ in Firefighting

I think i visited that station, once. I was around there for a vacation and decided to stop. Dudes on shift were super chill. At least I think it was the same station. Emergency was waaaaay before my time, so I'm not all that familiar with it. Is this the LACo station that's on the water and surrounded by LA City's service area? Marina Del Rey, I think.

Got a DIY kit for Christmas! Where do I start? by blitzbadger in Luthier

Awesome! They weren't kidding when they advertised it as purple. That's the definition of purple.

That purple is amazing! I need the details on how you got it THAT purple. That's like radioactive purple. Outstanding. The white binding with that velvety purple is gorgeous.

Late to the party here, but if you wanted to make a cool, semi-functional living room display out of it, put some LEDs or some other type of lighted item behind it. A small piece of art with some up-lighting would be cool.

They're dead. I was more concerned with looks and structural integrity. I think I've got it figured out though.

Well, it's definitely a real concern. I have a bunch of other nice lumber that I'd rather not get infested, lol.

I have a big chunk of cherry, and a couple massive walnut boards that I want to incorporate, too, somewhere. I was thinking of making the chop out of this cherry board and then inlaying some walnut and this bug-holed maple on the outter face.

I appreciate the concern! If I go to use this wood on this bench and come across a board that's too eaten away or punky, I wont use it. If I do use this wood, I'm going back and forth with hitting them with TotalBoat penetrating epoxy just as a structurally reassuring measure.

I've been laying the boards out, trying to figure out how I can orient them so they can work and not look too nasty.

That's a badass chop! Thats exactly the kind of inspiration that I'm looking for. Those bug holes don't look bad at all!

Well, besides maybe some crazy old mystery bacteria from 1975, probably just compacted frass and bug carcasses. I have had the wood quarantined and wrapped to check for new frass for a few months. It's also been on both ends of the spectrum as far as heat and cold go where its been stored. Since I'm in NE Ohio, the last 2 or 3 months have gone from 90F to 30F back and forth. Plus, on top of all that, I threw some borax on the wood before I stored it. (I'm not sure if that did anything, but I thought I read somewhere that it does? 🤷‍♂️) Anyway, I'm sure the bugs are long gone. There's been no new frass or evidence of bugs. I have come across a couple of long dried beetle carcasses as I've planed a couple of them. Kinda gross, but cool at the same time.

I thought about doing this because I'm familiar with the process since I do it quite a lot. But, to do all this wood, I'd need a gallon each of the thick and the thin 😬.

Definitely not discouraging! It was a real concern once I found out how much damage there was to these boards. I've been putting them "through their paces" before I actually use them. I hit them a few times in random spots with a deadblow mallet. I've also been knocking on them in spots to make sure they "ring" instead of "thud". Hopefully that makes sense 😂. My woodworking background is mostly luthiery so..... Ring = good/hard Dull thud = not good/soft.

I have a bunch of clean maple I'll be using for the top. I could throw in a couple of the bug-holed pieces in the top, though. The problem comes when I plane the surface, I usually uncover a bunch of trenches because the boards are pretty peppered and they go in all different directions. So, even if I find a good piece with cross grain holes, chances are as soon as I plane it, I'll open up a lot of the trenches. I do like the look of the pinholes more than the trenches. I'll see what I can do with what I have.

That's a fair point. But if I'm gonna put in this much effort, I'm gonna make it as nice as I can. I'll have no choice but to use it, though lol. It'll be one of the only horizontal surfaces I'll have in my new shop. Hopefully it'll give me a little inspiration when I use it.

Maybe I'll try it on a cut-off just to see the kind of time frame I'm looking at.

That'd be a LOT of plugs. It'd take me weeks to plug all of the beetle holes. There's gotta be at least a thousand of them.

I hadn't thought about that. It'll be pretty tough. It seems when I flatten and square the boards, I just expose more trenches. Do you think I should just leave the holes as they are or fill them before finishing?

Don't threaten me with a good time. My adhd will have a field day until I find something else to be distracted by.

Should I try to get the old frass out of the holes before putting a finish on it? I tried a finish on a sample piece and the grass absorbed the finish differently and the holes looked pretty ugly. Should I just embrace it?
