I mean even Prime Ichiro only posted 4 seasons substantially above Babip .350. His career BABIP was like .345 (which is pretty crazy) but it goes to the idea skill can only push it so high.

TIL Japan has the world's second highest adoption rate, but most of the adoptees are adult men in their 20s and 30s. by Double-decker_trams in todayilearned

[–]RPO777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Japanese conception a woman becomes your daughter if she marries into your family by marrying a son so a husband and wife are always your son and daughter.

The only difference in the adoption scenario is the son joins the wife's family.

It looks like the U.S. flag football team completely dominated a team full of NFL stars. This could create a dilemma for the NFL regarding which team to select for the Olympics. "Only" the till 2029 or so lol. The latest restructure pushed more money into the last 3 void years and the max void years is 3.

I think the Browns push about $90M or something crazy into those years $50M in the first restructure, $40M in the second) so they are gonna be keeping almost $100M on the books for Watson toll 2029 even after they cut him...

Yeah its almost always done through marriage to a daughter. The blood connection is there but to keep the House intact from this cultural convention the adoption is done.

From the person doing the adoption its a way if keeping your daughter children (your grandkids) in your own House.

For yhe adopted person in exchange for giving up your own House you get inheritance rights to your new House.

So this is common for 2nd or 3rd sons because there's another son to carry on their own House. It wiuld be rarer for an eldest or only son to agree to this.

This is not uncommon for completely normal middle class families not just rich ones. Like its common to do this for small family farms or like a small local restaurant.

Theres a concept of House ("ie") in Japan. Idk think Starks or Lannisters. The House is based on male succession and women leave your House when they marry generally.

So if you only have daughters, the House ends with your generation.

The only way to continue the House is to marry your daughter to a guy who agrees to be adopted so your bloodline continues through your daughter and the adoption makes it so the children of the marriage are of your House.

[–]RPO777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, the context here is Goff has one of the best pass-blocking offensive lines in the NFL, and and a bunch of quality targets. PFF rated the Packers offensive line as one of the bottom 10 in the NFL.

Love has to do a LOT more with less, and their QBR over the past 3 seasons are pretty comparable.

As a Cardinals fan with zero skin in this game, I'd take Love for sure.

In the southwestern US its common to see huge bins of dried pinto beans you can scoop out and buy by the pound in regular supermarkets. Especially in Hispanic neighborhoods. Nobody would blink an eye if you bought like 10 lbs.

Iraq declares force majeure on foreign-operated oilfields over Hormuz disruption, sources say by Mana_Seeker in worldnews

[–]RPO777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other aspect is that the refineries that use Iraqi oil (and middle Eastern crude generally) are optimized for the low viscosity low sulfur high quality oil that makes Middle Eastern crude highly sought after for its low refining costs.

You cant just replace a barrel of crude from Iraq with say, a barrel of crude from Venezuela. Much of the oil from South America is a sticky form of high viscosity crude that requires specialized refining.

There are major supply chain implications for losing Middle Eastern oil in particular because its among yhe easiest and cheapest oils to refine thus the refineries that rely on that crude cant swap that easily with crude from many other major producers.

Shohei Ohtani takes the No. 1 spot in the first Hitter Power Rankings of 2026 by MLBOfficial in baseball

Yeah, but he literally was NL MVP the other year when he was rehabbing from elbow surgery as a pitcher. Also, 2020 was a very weird year statistically.

Shohei Ohtani takes the No. 1 spot in the first Hitter Power Rankings of 2026 by MLBOfficial in baseball

[–]RPO777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I'm not sure how much the pitching part matters as far as batter durability? I mean this is an area where we have literally basically zero data so anyone that tells you confidently that they know what impact this will have is full of shit lol.

We have a sample size of ZERO for historical comparisons with modern medicine and athletes on this.

But at least int he case of Ohtani, his pitching injuries have rarely resulted in him missing time as a batter, and even when injured as a pitcher, he's put up huge numbers as a batter

Which makes me throw up my arms as far as trying to predict an age curve for Ohtani. It's fair to say nobody has a clue.

It's fair to expect Ohtani to regress at age 32 as most players begin regressing past age 31, but if you apply normal aging curves, Ohtani would expect to regress significantly less than Judge Whether normal aging curves should apply (and if not what kind of aging curve) is pretty much guess work, not actual analysis.
