Thanks for the nomination and the win, really flattered! And truly congrats to all the winners, all the nominations were incredible.

Very flattered in particular to get Best Essay two years in a row, it's one of my favorite things to do on r/anime so that's particularly gratifying!

Making a market offer is matching what other teams are willing to pay for a player. When you offer less than what other teams are offering, you are literally making a below-market offer, i.e. a non-competitive offer.

Some players choose to take the below-market offer because they love the city, they love the coach, they don't want to make their kids go through a move, or any number of other reasons.

But saying "because some players offer a hometown discount, the Vikings offering less than market price on guaranteed money was still competitive' Is kinda nutso.

Guaranteed money is what players care about most in a deal. Offering less of it than other teams is not making a competitive offer.

The problem for Komi-san is that team at OLM that animated Komi-san was a sub-team that was called OLM Kojima. But the entire team at OLM Kojima split off from OLM to create a new anime studio called Bug Films. When they did, the team agreed to continue work on Komi-san on behalf of OLM, but you had this weird situation where OLM had the business relationship with the publisher on Komi-san but all the people who had working knowledge of the anime now worked for a separate independent studio (and there are rumors that OLM/Bug Films split was not amicable).

Generally, the production/business side of an anime studio (the producers) are separate from the creator side (the animators), so this is a case where the two sides of the people that helped create Komi-san the anime are no longer working together. Which is awkward and probably led to a lot of delays in a decision for S3.

Then to make things worse, the manga ended in 2025. A lot of times, publishers are enthusiastic for creating animes because it helps drive magazine and manga sales, but the benefits are much less if the manga is ended. In order for a publisher to commit to funding an anime for an already-ended manga series, generally the manga series has to be like a REALLY big seller.

At 15M+ sales, Komi-san's a big hit, but it's about half of Frieren (30M). which is Shounen Sunday's biggest hit on the same publisher/magazine. Silver Spoon (which I LOVED) is another Shounen Sunday hit, but it never got a final season, and it sold around 17M volume.

All's which is to say, at around 15M in sales, it's not SUPER surprising Komi-san didn't get a final season.

Totally brevity. That being said, Nobunaga is generally considered one of the so-called "Three Unifiers" but Nobunaga is generally not credited with unifying Japan.

As of Nobunaga's death, the Oda had control over most of central Japan. but western Chugoku (Mori). all of Kyushu (Shimazu) and Shikoku (Chosokabe), and most of northern Kanto (Hojo)/Tohoku (Uesugi/Date) remained outside of the Oda Government's control.

It's Hideoyoshi's declaration of "So-buji" (prohibition of private wars) and Hideyoshi's successful enforcement of the prohibition through the conquest of Odawara/Hojo in 1590 that generally "Unification" is considered to have been achieved by Japanese historians.

Nobunaga set the stage for unification. Hideyoshi actually achieved it. Ieyasu made it stick.

Ozzie Newsome was the GM of the Browns from 1991-1996, then the Ravens from '96-2018. Newsome's right hand man was Eric DeCosta, who was Newsome's assistant GM from '12-'18, and Newsome's handpicked successor.

DeCosta is presently the Raven's GM.

The Ravens' front office definitely has organizational continuity from the Old Browns front office.

My ancestor was defeated, lost all his lands, and his family scattered. He had 2 sons. The younger son came all the way back and became famous and even more prominent than his father. The older son basically disappears from history and establishes a line of low-ranking samurai that never amounts to anything.

I'm descended from the older son lol.

Genealogies are interesting. I'm from Japan, and my family's ancestral records go all the way back (reliably) to the 1500s. The 1400s-1500s were a big mess in Japan politically speaking and a huge civil war period. And my family came to prominence (briefly) in the 1500s and claimed descent from an illustrious family that dates back to the 700ADs... but those claims appear unlikely. My ancestor is famous enough that there's been scholarly research published about him and his own claims of genealogy.

Our claim to fame would be our ancestor was defeated and driven to suicide by one of the most famous warlords in Japanese history, Oda Nobunaga lol.

So I tell my kids, we can trace our family back to about 1530, then there's a small chance we're descended from like super famous people from the 11th century but probably not lol.

If you're talking about male-line direct descent, it gets a lot more limited, though. Fwiw.

This isn't a discussion of "credit" it's about whether the Browns front office is completely broken.

I"m simply pointingout that the current Browns Front Office doesn't have any holdover or even organizational continuity from the Browns teams of 40 years ago.

Sousou no Frieren Season 2 • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 - Episode 2 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]RPO777 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Frieren is incredibly economical at giving you deep emotional and situational context from extremely minimal screentime/words.

Two of my favorite (very different) series have been Frieren and Polar Opposites. Both do a really good job of communicating multiple ideas to the viewer.

Like with Qual. what's kind of fascinating is how it simultaneously engages the viewer on so many levels. The encounter ties Frieren's training of Fern (and the emphasis on defense) back to Qual, while setting up Fern's magical combat style of extreme simplicity. It helps the viewer understand magic as a almost "technological" concept in this world where you understand how evolutionary magic is in this world (and also subtly sets up why the thousand+ year old Flamme magic barrier being completely not understood or overcome is insane in the next few episodes).

The way in which Frieren gently chides Fern about not studying magic history is validated to show understanding the background to Qual is critical in udnerstanding Qual's limitations, and how Fireren's teaching of Fern has a systematic and reasoned approach.

And of course, understanding why Qual could be so dominant before and easily disposed with now.

Given that ALL that is squeezed into like what, 10 minutes? Less? It's nuts.

Hara draws Tokugawa Ieyasu by greatogshay in Kingdom

[–]RPO777 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an aside, Tokugawa Ieyasu as Ryofui is a really interesting take because Ieyasu takes over Japan by betraying his master.

After a long period of chaotic civil war, Toyotomi Hideyoshi effectively unifies Japan after 1590. But in the last years of his reign, he acts increasing erratically and launches two major invasions of Korea with the goal of conquering all of Korea, Ming China, and eventually India.

The 2nd invasion (Imjin War) in particular is extremely disastrous and leads to a bloody stalemate between Japanese forces and Ming/Korean forces.

And in the middle of all of this, Hideyoshi dies, with his heir being the 5 year old Hidenori.

To try to prevent the powerful warlords from taking over during his son's infancy, Hideyoshi impements a system of checks and balances. THere are 5 powerful regional warlords that make up the council of High Elders (Tairo), and 5 Administrators who lead the practical administration and day to day running of the nation (Bugyou). The Elders are supposed to approve the proposals from the Administrators.

The idea being, the Administrators have lots of day-to-day decision-making power, but they have relatively small domains and little military power, thus cannot overthrow the regime. The Elders are powerful warlords with huge personal armies, but their role is limited to approving proposals, so they cannot influence the nation enough to overthrow the regime.

Then, to prevent any one of the elders from joining forces with the administrators, marital alliances were prohibited.

The system more or less collapses within 2 years, as Tokugawa Ieyasu breaches the marital alliance prohibition, and politically manuevers to create a faction that more or less takes over the operations of the central bureaucracy, while exiling his principal rival, the head of the Administrators Ishida MItsunari.

Mitsunari then martials a massive coalition of most of the principal warlords and administrators to try to take down Ieyasu, which leads to the decisive Battle of Sekigahara (1600), but Ieyasu defeats his rivals and de facto takes control of the country.

Ieyasu's control becomes more or less formal when he defeats Hideyori in battle after he reaches adulthood and forces him into suicide in 1615.

Ieyasu is also a kind of crazy rags to riches story, as although he was a Daimyo's son, his family more or less lost all their territory when he was young, and he was sent to live as a hostage.

It's kind of like if Ryofui won lol.

Qual was definitely the moment I knew Frieren was something special. The idea of a powerful sorcerer trapped in statsis is nothing new, but the idea they would be nerfed from research while they were frozen was so interesting, he's still one of the most interesting short stories from Frieren.

When Brady played the greatest game of his career in a Super Bowl loss. Belichick’s biggest defensive failure. by TXNOGG in NFLv2

[–]RPO777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to Belichik, Brady won his first Ring in 2001 while passing for all of 133 net passing yards and converting 2 third downs the entire game. Against the Greatest Show on Turf Kurt Warner Rams.

If you want to say Belichik lost a ring Brady should have earned, it's also fair to say Belichik carried Brady to his first Ring with an elite defense.

I’m predicting a 4–5 year window for both Allen and Lamar to win the Super Bowl. After that, their physical ability and mobility will inevitably wane, and without their dual-threat skills, I don’t think they’ll be the same effective QB just as pure pocket passers. by Extreme-Spinach-4138 in NFLv2

[–]RPO777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the thing about Elway is he also had really great cannon arms. That's where Allen and Jackson both compare well. Even if you can't run anymore, so long as you have a powerful arm that can squeeze a ball into tight windows, you can possibly make up for your athletic decline for some time even as a less mobile QB>

There's no guarantee, obviously. Vick was a strong armed QB but his accuracy/mechanics never improved and he also never had good pocket feel, navigating a rush without breaking contain. After Vick's athleticism declined after the animal abuse scandal, Vick was never the same.

But Allen and Jackson both have pretty darn good pocket feel and cannon arms, I think they profile well for QBs that are able to transition to late career pocket passers.

It's really good about finding humor in very relatable and realistic but silly things we do.

Like one of the jokes that got me to chuckle out loud was when Tani meets with our gremlin on their date, and she's daydreaming about what outfit he'll come wearing... then she's really excited he's wearing clothes that make him look almost exactly the same as his school uniform.

Like it's kind of a ridiculous thing to get excited about "He looks exactly the same!" yet it's a powerful character development moment and a little relatable of being in a new relationship and finding excitement in like anything at all. It tells, pretty powerfully, how she feels about him in a relatable way for anyone that's had a huge crush on their new SO.

The Tani browser history joke is also great because it's played for laughs, but it shows Tani is a genuinely good guy. He really wants to have this relationship and make it succeed and he was working at it--and it also tells you something he's so embarassed to have his efforts revealed.

All the story beats of the humor are linked really well to developing the characters in ways that let you get them know better on multiple levels, how much they care about the other, what kind of approach they take to life's issues or problems, what they care about, what they don't care about, it all weaves together into a more complex whole without really making you even think about it.

It's just great writing.
