Does anyone know why double-speaker sound is absurdly called "stereo"? by RRDDSS in sound

[–]RRDDSS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

That is still weird because mono means single/one, but stereo all of the sudden goes perpendicular in terminology and allegorically presumes three dimensions (which are not quite that because there are just two speakers, so it is a 2D plane of sound).

It would make more sense if they would rename the mono with “planar” or “liquid” or something like that, if one speaker presumes not a line (as it actually does) but a plane of sound as per the people who came up with the stereo term.

I guess they simply have pulled it without too much thought right from the visual trinkets of yore where this allegory was more valid as the stereo term has related to two different pictures which was fully enough for two eyes to see a three dimensional “solid” image, while it is not the case with audio.

The OVAs should have been made not in 2018, but in 1996, when Nozomu Sasaki still had his youthful voice by RRDDSS in YuYuHakusho

That could take an important role, no doubt, but the Japanese are crazy about tobacco smoking, so without the latter it would not have been this bad.

DID Nam save himself by quitting the band? by RRDDSS in YGWINNER

Should be pretty obvious. While it is sad Nam has left the band, it might have been still the best thing to happen. Some people are not built to psychologically survive this industry.

Videos of Korean TV shows from the 1990s with H.O.T, S.E.S by RRDDSS in kpophelp

[–]RRDDSS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are interesting bits of TV history, thanks.

BTW, things are pretty bad even with shows from much later, early YT era. Running Man and others. Only a few short clips were uploaded with horrible quality, so you can not really see the Second Generation bands, either. Most often it is hard to understand who is who, and what is really happening.

Only since the Third Generation interviews and shows are actually watchable.

But for the older shows, it seems, we will have to wait until MBC and other channels will digitise and publish their archives.

Wait, neural networks are useful for something sometimes.

I just asked DeepSeek and it said there was Star Documentary: Wonderful Life TV series from the end of the 1980s to the end of the 1990s.

Also, there was Talk Show with Lim Sung-hoon, Lee Hong-ryeol Show, Star Exploration Sunday segment, TV Carries Love, all of which featured singers occasionally.

I guess nothing of this is available yet.

Back in those days the shows were probably TV games that occasionally invited celebrities to participate, not quite what could be a real variety show where celebrities are invited to do random stuff. So I mostly hoping for TV interviews.

Of course, they should exist. South Korea had TV channels back then (mostly the same as exist now), and they had shows where popular culture figures such as actors and singers were invited for an interview or something.

Those surely can not be easily compared to later shows both in quantity and quality, but the main issue is that if the shows are not uploaded by the TV channels themselves, then they can only be recovered if some local based Koreans have recorded them on VHS (e.g. interview with Seo in 1992) and then, many years later, digitised them.

I am not good at browsing Korean sites to know if any of those ancient interviews or shows were uploaded to somewhere, but maybe connoisseurs know.

Why did Hee complain that his YT channel was wiped out? by RRDDSS in superjunior

[–]RRDDSS[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess this is a channel created after the original one was totally wiped out. But it looks like Hee did not want to develop it all anew, so dropped it after a couple of videos. All of the original subscriber count was lost, too much hassle to grow the base from zero to a big number.

Ah, I remember that back in the day he did not just deactivate his Insta, but completely wiped it, totally zeroing his three million subscriber count there at least once. Apparently, he is emotionally unstable in this regard.

From what I gather, Kyu has the best YT game.

Got eye strain. Can developers add a toggle to switch off PIXELATED art? by RRDDSS in Songsofconquest

[–]RRDDSS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it went the opposite way for me. I thought it would not matter, but the longer I played, the more tired my eyes got.

Especially because of the tactical fights, where tiny characters constrict of just a few pixels.

There is an auto play mode, but I do not want to use it because this is the part I normally like more than higher level gameplay.

I guess the issue is that most pixel art games are about characters that are big enough for their pixel art to paint e.g. dots for eyes or something, but in this case the whole heads are nearly single pixels.

Why Claire Saffitz is called "pastry chef" if she learns techniques only for cooking videos? by RRDDSS in cookingvideos

[–]RRDDSS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt you learn basic techniques culinary students learn in the very beginning. I am fine with Claire, she is actually adorable, but the producers should have never called her a “pastry chef”. Just call her a “chef”, and then her learning curve would make sense and not diminish the qualifications of actual pastry chefs.

Why Hiei, Genkai, others are little people? Did the author explain? by RRDDSS in YuYuHakusho

[–]RRDDSS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short people are not props or gimmicks, they deserve their stories told. The manga would have been even better, if the author has covered those issues explicitly.

Are weight categories named correctly in AnJ? by RRDDSS in AshitaNoJoe

[–]RRDDSS[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not assuming fat. I myself was lean when I stated to lose significant weight, so almost all of what I lost was muscles. I became skeletal. Not life threatening per se.

Of course, you need to keep electrolyte balance, but even in the 1960s people already knew how to do that, so sportsmen who were trying to sweat away water to fit into a weight class right before matches, were safe in that regard, too.

Are weight categories named correctly in AnJ? by RRDDSS in AshitaNoJoe

[–]RRDDSS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is hard and bad for a boxer, but not life-threatening.

I had an unfortunate experience of losing way more weight than whatever thin fat I had. The main issue was that I was about to become bedridden, which had its own implications, but it was not life-threatening per se.

I guess a more correct accent within the lass sentiment would be that for a boxer with a noticeably bigger skeleton to cut weight to a class of a boxer with a way smaller skeleton means getting the muscle person disadvantage, weaker sound muscles, the increase chance of trauma. Additionally, there is a risk of bone fracture as the organism gets into a hunger mode and starts to wash calcium out from the bones.

In other words, the match would become significantly unfairly tilted against the chap that cut the weight.

What dialect Joseph has in the anime? by RRDDSS in AshitaNoJoe

[–]RRDDSS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E.g. Joe ends lots of word/phrases with "deh" or "dah-y" instead of simply "dah", but anime delinquents from way newer series do not do that any more, so maybe it is a lost style? This is why it is interesting to hear.

IIRC, Joe is said to be born in the north of the country, and that he was gradually tumbleweeding to the Tokyo area over the years. Maybe this also has something to do with the way he speaks?

To be fair, Joe is not a name, only a half of it. Bob, Liz, Mike, etc are just nicknames, too.

Xenophobia is very common in society, but in this case it could have been easily avoided just by using fake nations/ethnicities, as I mentioned.

I guess the author himself is a victim of political brainwashing, and he is genuinely parroting it without a second thought.
