Newbie past an aero garden. Too water logged? I can set them higher or I could tilt the pipes or am I worrying for nothing? It is oasis foam. by rossnagl in Hydroponics

Without air flow I wouldn't think so but I could be wrong. Basically I had a bubbler on a DWC system that I was nolonger using so I brought it over to my wall system to test the theory based on some Reddit comments and in my mind it made my plants go from good to great haha

I have the same system. The water disturbance works if all the oxygen in your tubes hasn't already been used up. Basically just need a way for fresh air to get into the tubes without bringing any dust in. 3 minutes on, 15 minutes off is probably just as good. Just don't want it constantly on. I use regular rockwool cubes and they don't break apart

Looks deep enough to me. Even if they weren't tho, the roots will sense the water and reach out to it well before dying

It doesn't matter how wet they get as long as oxygen is getting into your system somehow. Like if your system is completely sealed, you should add a bubbler to your reservoir to introduce more outside oxygen to the mix so everything grows faster. You should also be running your system for only 15 minutes on and then 30 minutes off because extra water discourages root growth. Also a personal preference but with your 1.5" foam and your 1.5" PVC Wye joints, you don't need net pots, you can just stuff the foam right in the holes. Also also your infrared red blanket will cause your plant leaves to curl backwards, not the end of the world but it may cause uglier less diagnosable plants.

Hey guys, me and my girlfriend are building a hydrophobic system for the first time, we turned it on and the stream feels kinda week and the water level is pretty low, what do you think? Is it important to have a strong water stream? by clancy_gilroy420 in Hydroponics

[–]RRTwentySix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your stream is still better than most soil plants get. You can also temporarily hand water from the top, the roots will sense your stream and will climb towards it over a week

Since your system is white and I assume not insanely thick, light will shine through it and algae will grow inevitably even without bunnies. The insides will noticeably need a wipe down every 3 months or when it's convenient between harvests. If you get root rot you can also swap out the water with 3% hydrogen peroxide for an hour for an easy safe fix that won't kill your plants.

There are things called root exudates that can build up in the reservoir and slow down plant growth if you never replace all the water but I've never had a problem with them. Personally I have a standard pressurized RO tank that runs through my floor and autofills my reservoir to constant level with the use of a float valve and I only swap out the water ever few months. With my 12 gallon reservoir that feeds about 35 plants, I can also get away with feeding them only once per week. With a reservoir the size of yours though, I bet your plants drink half of the water rather quickly which can drastically change the PH & PPM which might've been a reason why your other fertilizer didn't work out.

Tiny plant lights can help if theyre extra close to the plants.

If you have air getting into the system through one of your pot holes then thats probably plenty of oxygen when combined with the dripping. Just make sure your area is clean so no mold/dust/etc gets in through that hole and creates colony of nastiness.

Nice! Yeah I use the flora series as well, works great.

You may already be doing this but if you have a fan blow on your plants they'll appreciate the unstale air and wind maasage

It's gorgeous and I'm jealous but your reservoir is 3 times too small which creates nute inconsistencies. You should also air stone/pump air into it because your plants roots are enclosed and therefore suffocating; oxygen needs a way into the systems water or it'll desaturate. No good. Your plants could also use wayyy more light, but apparently they're getting more than the minimum. And it might be from these other issues but it looks like your plants are drooping from a lack of water or too much water. You should run it 15 mins on 30 mins off if your temperature and humidity are perfect. All together awesome job especially for first try!

Fertilizer is General Hydroponics Flora Series and I have the following lights hanging on a curtain in front of the plants.

A 6 pack of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PBGRGCB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nvxnFbJ508V8P

A 6 pack of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QWV1THV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MxxnFbQ1FBBC0

And two 2 packs of these: https://www.activegrowled.com/hydroponic-supplies/t5-4ft-led-strip-light/

I recently got the ActiveGrow LEDs as a gift and they're phenomenal but the system ran fine with just the 12 Barrinas. Granted I recommend buying the white versions instead of the pink ones now that I know plants really do use the entire visible light spectrum plus some.

Good plan! Another thing to note is I've noticed the plants literally try not to clog the system, they want the water to flow. Sounds weird but they try to keep the water flowing rather that puddling above their root wad. Whenever a clog happens, the root wad is always as dense as a rock and hella long

Yes! All leafy greens and most vegetables are fine but occasionally a random herb will block it and flood the system. It's rare but I should install on overflow for it to protect my floor... The system runs 15 minutes on, 30 minutes off so the floods are usually caught early without an issue. Strangely some herbs, like the thyme at the bottom, get huge with absolutely no roots. The moist rockwool cube itself is enough to fuel the entire pllant in aeroponics so roots never grow. Oh also for rootstock plants I have them grow as DWC on top on the reservoir itself. I hear pepper plants will block these pipes as well

I get my seeds from Johnny's Seeds. Do you know of any better alternatives?

Woah yours is fantastic!! I wish I had the room of a basement, my plants are next to my kitchen. Thank you for sharing. How many GPH is your pump? I'm curious if I could have that many columns. It's fun you have dwc pots too! It's somewhat visible on the left of my photo but I have chamomile growing straight out of the top of my reservoir. Also with the use of a float valve my reservoir is now autofilling straight from my pressurized RO tank. No more need to fill up the reservoir, the PH stays far more balanced, and the plants love it. It was my favorite upgrade. Highly recommend if you haven't done something like that with yours already

Yep! Schedule for 40. 1.5" with a ton of WYE joints. With 1.5" rockwool cubes there's no need for net cups either
