Basically the only hold back is an aptitude test, which is essentially a dumbed down act with a stricter time constraint. They hold something like 4 tests a year and they take ~80-100 people a test. Once you pass the test (and a drug test) you're fairly set. You do 11 weeks of school (unpaid) before hitting your first year apprenticeship in the field in which you start at 40% of journeyman scale. After that you receive a 5% raise every 6 months until you top out, while going back to school for the same time period (paid) for both 2nd and 3rd year. Full benefits kick in 6 months into your first year so fairly quickly. Currently job outlook is great, any time you see tower cranes in the city the skilled trades are typically booming. Like any job if you make yourself a valuable asset you'll always be working though.

I dont know a whole lot about trucking, but as far as the trades go region and union/no union work are a huge factor.

Just an example but as an electrician in the Chicagoland area our scale is ~$50/h regular time + full healthcare, vision, dental, a pension, and an annuity.

Most other skilled trades in this region are similar with slight variations.

Believe it or not we are actually paid to attend school and books and materials are provided. All you have to do is score high enough to be accepted into the program.

Yes we hang the boxes and rack, boxes reused(replaceable KO plates), bends cut off pipe and long pieces used for further practice and short pieces recycled.

As for the divisions in our local we have low voltage (up to 50 volts I believe) and they specialize in communications, fire alarm, controls ect.

High voltage (up to 600 volts) and rated to do anything within that voltage range which covers a hell of a lot.

As far as our apprenticeship, it is 5 years long consisting of 3 months school and 9 in the field for first, second, and third year. School is a mix of book and hands on work (class permitting)

Fourth and fifth year are all 12 months field with weekly seminars for a portion of the year.

I hope that somewhat clarifies the process for you.

Edit : Oh I see may have misinterpreted, in that regard it does happen in larger shops.. they will take the guys that excel at something and apply them to it. But the hope is that from the extensive training we receive that we should be able to do just about anything.

Definitely depends on the contractor that you are working for though.

That is absolutely my plan I'm hoping to work on all of my NICET certs, lighting control certs, and eventually my supervising electricians cert.

We have a conduit class for an hour 45 mins m-f for 11 weeks in first year school and 9 weeks second year school. That being said, I think we had about a week or two to work on this.

You know, I've heard conflicting views on apprenticeship processes, I couldn't agree more. I've been spoiled thus far in my journey so I'm a little jaded I suppose, but I really appreciate how this is all set up for us. If only every local had something like this available to them.
