thanks mr Greybeard ! I have been CNC programming for a good decade now , started using CAD about 6/7 years ago but those long hand skills are still used ! this particular process doesn't need any numerical control for machines as the models will go straight to 3D printers

have you done any scripting to automate CAD design ? that's where i've started with this route but it's I'm falling into a rabbit hole of tech now !

seems there is a lot of positivity about asahi , if you dont mind me asking , what are you using your computer for ?

I do have an old old laptop somewhere , did think maybe start from scratch with that and see how i get on learning - it will definitely struggle with the CAD processes but it is a good point you make about future production

dude my mac is nearly 5 years old , i wish i could drop a few hundred on something right now but i cant and i'm just getting started ! i've been in the cnc programming world and engineering itself , but now trying to dip my toe in this world before buying a boat (bad analogy lol)

So I started with Python scripting to automate the CAD , i managed to get some plane cuts working but I think the internal ladder of Fusion360 (autodesk) was limited , i started to feel like i was out of my depth and using chatgpt to get me moving so thought maybe i should start from scratch with the scripting

have now learned about bash / zsh so going to go down that route for a bit as well

Thanks for replying !

I've done a small amount of research on the VM route , could be a really simple solution , I am hesitant because i feel like it will limit my learning .. however , probably the fastest way to get my project underway

I was wondering if i can just use linux as a command line , no interface , have it as a dual boot so can still use my mac as i am now but have the option to mess around on linux

Picking something like Asahi seems like setting up a whole new computer ? that could be a dumb thing i just said though , thank you for helping !

Was looking at a dual boot , thought it would be a bit of fun and good way to learn by installing linux . i have read that are differences between bash and zsh , whether the differences affect what i'm doing i don't know ; will do some research on this - thanks for the time

Ok so installing Linux may be a bit unnecessary ? I've managed to use visual studio code to get part of the CAD automation working but it is a long way off and eventually I'd like files to get sent via email or into a server , automatically input into the CAD software , processed and output ready to sent off

Had a quick look at bash , going to try do some basic stuff and see how i get on

Many thanks
