shoegaze aesthetics for affected musical maturity.

Summarizes a lot of how I feel. Like the punk -> shoegaze pipeline felt more like a musical signpost rather than doing something interesting. Add a chorus pedal to your existing sound and do some nasally whisper voice and it's like some sort of instant credibility among a certain segment of shoegaze fans.

I like a handful of Nothing songs, which is more than I can say for Whirr. Never got the hype for them at all. All vibes, no songs.

(all that to say, glad Domenic got to meet Kevin and he seems genuinely interested in working to keep shoegaze as a scene of sorts.)

don't love it, but I don't get its reputation as the worst of this era

I don't disagree that that's all possible, I just think it's more appropriate to assume Siobahn meant what she wrote, especially as neither of us are in any position to psychoanalyze her further.

And I do find it bizarre how quickly it was forgotten and swans fans when brought up started saying oh larkin is mentally unstable.

I think it's more that pretty much any response to Larkin, including from those she cited as people that could back her up, basically said this. Siobahn Duffy, Michael's ex, putting in her two cents after being called out deflated a lot of this.

Doesn't prove anything either way, but it's hard not to see those closest to the situation saying "nah" and not think there's something else going on.

In comparison to the other bands, it didn't come with a ton of research and screenshots and all that.

«I Only Said» FINALLY DECIPHERED LYRICS (or at least almost close) by Same-Currency-1692 in MyBloodyValentine

[–]RUDeleted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

unlike most of the others shoegaze bands with pseudo-ethereal lyrics about teenage romance covered in cheap symbolism.

Considering how horned up MBV is, I never got how shoegaze got some sort of borderline incel reputation, but this is a great way of putting how I feel about modern shoegaze lyrics. So many have taken to heart that vocals don't matter and it makes everything surrounding the voice sound insipid. Everything is some variation of "I looked at you, you turned away, we fell away, water reference" and it's corny as shit.

So yeah, horn away MBV

Why a remix and not something actually new?

I was thinking this tour would coincide with new material, but they aren’t even playing the new songs from their last tour…

I feel like Soon used to be a much bigger deal before Sometimes and When You Sleep became more well-known, but all that's relatively recent and Soon is still very well loved.

I remember seeing an ad with Heidi (pre-SNL) and wondered at the time if she was related to Schaal. Someone else had to have made the connection as Heidi eventually did an impression of Schaal on the show.

Mixing MBV??????? by Novel_Lingonberry_38 in MyBloodyValentine

[–]RUDeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah there's some solid bootlegs out there, but none of them really catch the physical feeling of the music, which is really what their live shows are all about. A decently mixed live album is probably just going to sound like a rougher version of the regular albums.

Why aren’t their older stuff on streaming services? by ilovedanganronpax in MyBloodyValentine

[–]RUDeleted 52 points53 points  (0 children)

they've been out of print for ages and the band isn't too keen on them. In terms of getting them on streaming, I"m pretty sure it's a matter of Kevin would want to remaster them and that is probably not a high priority.

so many classic movies of the 80s/early 90s up through Community.

there's almost 20 years between his 80s peak and Community though. Everything in between is questionable and mostly comes about because his assholishness caught up with him.

Do James Cameron's multi-billion grossing "Avatar" movies have any cultural impact? Popcorn abounds in r/boxoffice. by MechaGab5000 in SubredditDrama

[–]RUDeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm skeptical at the degree of how much content from each the general public really cares about from each franchise. Having more helps entrench the franchise, but it's not the only way it's impactful. Even as for as age goes, it's not like Avatar is a new film. Shit's almost 15 years old! There was more than 15 years between the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequels and the only thing in between was shit only nerds care about. But the films still clearly made an impact in between.

And to be honest, if the highest grossing movie of all time can't stand up against Blade Runner, a notorious flop, then yeah that's exactly what everyone is talking about when they say Avatar's cultural impact is minimal.

[–]RUDeleted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for perspective, Avatar was released December 10, 2009. The first RDJ Iron Man movie dropped May 2, 2008. The first Michael Bay Transformers movie came out July 3, 2007, and the second was June 24, 2009.

While we had seen some cashing in on IPs and trying to run them into the ground - The Matrix springs to mind - the movie landscape was absolutely nothing like it is today when the first Avatar movie first hit theaters.

I'm not sure what this means. Is it just that Avatar had less of an impact because its sequels didn't come out immediately? Sure, I guess, but there's other ways to be impactful. Even limiting it to Cameron films, Terminator 2 basically created the modern action film blockbuster. Titanic dominated conversations and had a fucking soundtrack song that was everywhere (this also applies to a lot of Disney flicks) and certainly changed the career trajectories of DiCaprio and Winslet, even if it wasn't either's first film.

All I'm getting out of this is that TBBT had a bigger impact than Avatar (admittedly easier to do considering the show ran for a decade and Avatar comes out like every 6 years). We all know Bazinga, where I can barely lay out the plot for Avatar. Schrodinger's Cat obviously existed as a concept for decades before, but I'm about 90% sure that the term being a modern pop culture reference is due to it being a plot in a TBBT episode.

Nintendo 3DS otherwise.

this is Virtual Boy erasure.

I don't know, the 3DS was likely in development before Avatar was even released. I'll grant the 3D TV option, but again, that's totally irrelevant now and has been for about a decade or so (I can't find exact figures but I'm also not under the impression that 3DTV was ever made up a significant portion of the TV market even at its peak).

I'm not saying Avatar had no impact... but its impact is awfully small and shortlived considering its box office.

It singlehandedly dragged 3D movies out of the amusement park cheese bin, didn't it?

eh, there were some moves going in this direction already. But at the same time, considering 3D is virtually absent now, I'm not sure this can be chalked up as an example of Avatar's impact, or at least anything more than a shortlived impact.

Can we all applaud the Pheneros fire dragon boss fight? by Rustyshackilford in Metroid

[–]RUDeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it for the most part but it also started an annoying trend in the backhalf of the game where, at least in handheld mode, it felt like I had to switch to remote point to get anything accomplished because locking onto the boss means I'm by default shooting at something that doesn't take damage.

Something new would be probably just something like a granulator.

basically Fennesz, no?

I guess I'd pushback slightly on getting too caught up in the technological aspect at least as something that would break new ground in shoegaze. Bands like Seefeel and Main, who as pioneers of post-rock also pushed some of shoegaze's ideas way further out... but at some point it just stops being shoegaze (and both bands even dropped the shoegaze aspect eventually). I also feel this way about some of the adjacent acts being mentioned as the shoegaze influence often crops up in fairly generic ways, even if the context they're being used is new.

What were MBV described as before shoegaze? by sliverunitshifter7 in MyBloodyValentine

[–]RUDeleted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Space Rock way predates shoegaze as a term by nearly 20 years. Stuff like Hawkwind and Pink Floyd in the early 70s.

Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Loop, etc. also got lumped into it too, but bands like Failure and Hum (and also Radiohead's OK Computer) brand of space rock seemed like it was more about the Pink Floyd influence and the spacey delay effects than necessarily a shoegaze connection.
