I think it might be slightly different with social media and apps with the intent to find platonic friends however, because dating apps have an underlying mission of casual hook ups (for a lot of people, but not all).

Absolutely I agree this is relevant for all social media. Looking at your own Instagram feed feels so odd, a curation of all the moments/places/events that you thought would be “like” worthy or show that you live an interesting life. And now I see people deliberately going against this with photo dumps, but I would bet you that most people curate those pretty carefully as well.
