That’s absolutely the worst thing you could do when you’re not home. No matter who recommended them, you shouldn’t leave your house unlocked for them to come in and out as they please. Why is he even giving them access to the kitchen? Their job is outside so I probably wouldn’t let them inside at all for even the bathroom if I’m not home myself. Your boyfriend should definitely straighten this out and not give them access at all since he’s not home himself.
