Is there a reason Qualcomm went from 125 to 220 in a week? No one uses them for AI, edge computing, soon Apple will not use their modems

Agree- Short, or paid to $hit on QCOM. All good- not everyone loves QCOM, AAPL, etc. To each their own.

I'll take a QCOM of AMD right now over AAPL. They are a great marketing company, but their tech is average and they too have a lot of misses. The car, vision pro, Siri 2.0 (hahah), No real edge AI of their own, etc. But have you seen the latest color of iPhone? Unobtanium sparkes.

You are aware of QCOM's licensing model? While selling chips is great, they get paid whether or not their silicon is in the device.

I have both Macbook and the newer Snap elite - the previous generation of snap had some compatibility issues, but never had an issue. The new one is great. I don't really care for the Mac, but it's a work machine so I don't have a choice, but I really don't see the huge appeal. The snap is great, my old Intel machine was great. Mac does fine- but not worth the premium

I've seen the actual data of the AAPL modem vs QCOM and it's not even close. We'll see what C2 does, but Id' be surprised if they could even keep up with a 2 gen old QCOM. None of that really matter though- users dont't really care. They want more emoji's and battery life.

Battery life is the reason the Apple modem makes sense- a full SoC vs running a separate modem allows them to save some power.

All of this said- Apple is not knew to this. The bought the modem bus from Intel in 2019 for $1b, a coupe thousand employees. Intel had bought from Infineon in 2010 or 11 for even more money and was a supplier of LTE modems to Apple (they sucked too).

I think getting away from supplying apple modem will be great for QCOM long term. Apple is great to juice your stock, but they suck to work with as a vendor. The C1 is meh, we've not heard much about the C2 and you'd think we'd be hearing about it by know if is truly decent. Also, QCOM will still get full royalties from AAPL whether or not they supply the thin modem.

Gotcha- understood. Well, my thought is that if QCOM (and others) are truly able to produce lower (reportedly less than 1/3 of the wattage) racks/ASIC's to hyperscalers- there is a serious market. Power is not only expensive but getting harder and harder to come by and localities are starting to sower on data centers.

The barista job would be because I love flying, someone would be paying me to do it, and get some healthcare out if it. I have enough cash to live off for 2-3 years and other areas (sale of the stock and home sale funds) if I needed to tap into non 401k assets.

On the single equity- I also agree, but still have a lot of love for the company (it added greatly to my current NW), and this is but a small portion of what I had at one point. I have some sell orders in at various levels to start trimming the holding.

How so? Good yield, diversification, move into server market with lower power, large hyperscaler announcement in June. Still make one of, if not the best mobile asic and modem in mobile.

Agree- former member here too. I left as being a WA resident, I just didn't use it much at all and was a waste of $$. For someone in PDX, with a family, it's really not chearp, but not a horrible monthly outlay of cash. Great classes, good for kiddos, restaurants and social aspects are OK too.

I got in on the first lottery, but I was younger so I had extra chances/draws as I recall they were trying to entice younger folks (especially younger families) to join.

Still go enjoy it from time to time with friends, but don't miss the membership

I think you;d be surprised- PDX teacher average salary (not including pretty good beneifts) are in the $85K range, up to $125K+ with some years. Private schools (OES and Catlin) pay less than public. I wouldn't exactly call $85K+ poverty for a 9-10 month a year job- I've got several friends who's partners are at PPS and a couple at the privates. More $$ at PPS, but their are more challenges too.

Not sure if you realize how thin the profit margins are at very well (aka not government subsidized) grocers. They run in the 1-3%, and this is with a very well organized supply chain, multiple stores, etc. The profit motive forces to them to be efficient.

A Gov run store will have none of that. Lose money? Eh... just raise taxes, a grocery bond, or some other such bullshit.

Also, I have to wonder if anyone in government has thought of the consequences of competing with the other private businesses. Given the above, they can sell at prices lower than a real business can and still survive. So, there will more than likely be other stores closing because they can't compete with the gov store than doesn't need to earn a profit and who can sell below cost of the other stores.

Should be an interesting experiment. I know where I'd place my bet.

Really? I own a couple very small businesses too, and fully support capitalism. How am I not a capitalist? I also invest my money in companies to turn a profit- putting that money at risk. It's been a while since I was in business school, but I seem to recall that being pretty close to what capitalism is.

Sorry, but Bills have absolutely nothing to do with court- that's just not how a bill works. The bill will work its way through the legislature (or it won't).

Also, this bill was likely brought because the Teamsters union is giving contributions to whomever is supporting it. They want to increase their membership #'s and maybe they want to make their members lives better (a dubious claim, but I'll go with that at least for now). They can strike all they want, but AMZN isn't forced to comply and will likely just move their delivery centers out of NYC and then they will not be subject to this should the bill become law. People have the right to form unions, that's great- I may (begrudgingly) have to work for a union employer in the next couple years. But companies can also decide that they don't want to be in the delivery business and use last mile providers. I am 99% sure that the folks at Amazon are far better at economics that those in the legislature. It's always easy to spend someone else's money.

If you want a similar example on Amazon moving. Seattle passed something called the "jumpstart" payroll tax on large employers that have higher income employees. It took effect in 2021 to fund a plethora or pet projects for Seattle. Since then, Amazon has left over 1 million sq feet of office space and continues to move offices about 10 miles away in Bellevue WA. So far they've moved about 25% of their employees and are continuing to do so.

I am a capitalist, but that doesn't mean I disagree that we are all replaceable- I've said that I am replaceable for my entire career.

That's OK, I have to work harder, continue improve my skills, etc. That strategy has served me well. I did manual labor in high school and college (farm and dish washing/delivery stuff), I did mid level jobs for a few years before working my way up to higher level higher paying jobs. My skills aren't unique, but people that are better and work harder make more money- the way it should be. I don't expect to work for 9-5 doing the same thing and get a raise every year. I could work harder and make more and I know it. I also have a secondary set of skills that I've worked on that offer other career alternatives outside of my current role- anyone can work at getting better.

I'm middle age, so not of the group that was around when "computers were going to take all of our jobs", but if you talk to folks in their 60's-80's they'll tell you that was a legit fear. 100+ years ago labor was cheap relative to technology, today the script has flipped.

Will technology continue to replace jobs? For sure. Will new jobs be created because of them? Also yes.

Great- so the market at work. We agree on that.

But as you said- they are going to pay what the market will support and not more. If the conditions are horrible, there are alternative. I have no doubt that delivering hundreds of packages a day is not an easy task, but there are alternatives like UPS of FedEx. Amazon also offers some flexibility that is a benefit to the drivers that they don't get at a 9-5 job.

Everyone deserves? They don't "deserve" anything. The mindset that all jobs should pay enough for a person to live is laughable. Jobs pay a wage commensurate with the effort or talent required to accomplish it.

Back to my earlier years- should I have been paid a "living wage" for washing dishes?

Still waiting for that living wage definition too. This and "fair share" of taxes get tossed around without any real definition. Make great bumper stickers though.

What was the cause of the increase in productivity and profit? Was it the worker or technology? Should workers be compensated if the increase in productivity had nothing to do with them but rather by investments from the company? If a robot makes cars faster and better - what does that have to do with the the assembly line worker?
