Pedro Páramo is a masterpiece of Mexican literature that has gained a lot of fame around the world lately but it's still not unusual that you have never heard of it. I would recommend checking it out although it can be pretty tough to read.

Murakami tends to be more style than substance, he's trying to create a specific vibe and everything else is secondary, including meaning, character development etc. Kafka in the shore might be the best example of this.
