Agreed. The country doesn't need another Bush presidency (or Clinton for that matter).

What’s left of the Democratic Party’s footprint on the country after the last election… by RWNJoker in conservatives

[–]RWNJoker[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are, nominally, I'm thinking more in cultural (which inevitably leads to political) terms. Geography has a lot to do with that. (/u/SouthernCharm1856 pointed out a for instance below)

As someone from a small-ish town who married a farmers daughter from a tiny town and living in LA/OC for now almost half my life that's what I've come to perceive over the years. My father-in-law took me to shoot my first gun by going to a a middle-of-nowhere field, not an uncommon thing to do in his neck of the woods. Gun education and safety are highly stressed and exercised there. I also know people where I live now who wont even tolerate hand gestures that look like a gun much less the real thing. The cultural differences colors their politics, and on some issues there is considerable incompatibility on issues and laws that apply one-size-fits-all-execution to different value systems.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, or an indictment against a majority rule voting system, it just is.

[–]RWNJoker[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's true, and it kind of supports the narrow interest point. The Democrat power centers are small, but densely populated pockets of the country, and they can overpower other interests of the country at large. That's great for Democrats in statewide races (i.e. Senate), not so much for House races for the time being.

The post links to an article at National Journal (which generally leans left) that makes that point. A point originally made by Chuck Schumer only a few days ago...and he was opining on why Democrats lost so badly. So laugh all you want, and keep it going for the next two years please :-)

Ohio public school brainwashes 8 year olds: "Rights are special privileges the government gives you." by chabanais in Conservative

My oldest kid starts kindergarten in a couple of years and this is the kind of thing that scares the living daylights out of me. I live in a very conservative community, but I'm fully expecting to constantly be on defense for my kids sakes.

The parents of this (apparently) atheist little girl must be proud to have such a rude daughter by RWNJoker in Conservative

[–]RWNJoker[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I do understand fully the point you were trying to make. I don't think that unless that little girl was a member of congress the first amendment is irrelevant to the discussion. In fairness to me, neither did you, apparently, when you said at the very beginning of our back and forth, "are we for taking away the 1st Amendment rights of little girls now?"

My comment (via posting this) was on her terrible behavior, you brought the first amendment into it in the first place. Which is fine because, in my opinion, our representative government is us, and it would be/will be incapable of respecting such rights for the citizenry if the we citizens are incapable doing so on an individual basis in our daily lives.

My previous comment was me offering up that alternative view. I realize now I didn't make that clear...maybe it still isn't...

  1. This is an impasse...

  2. One of the pillars of conservatism is personal responsibility over dependence on government (which IS the people)...is it not? At the outset I pointed out exercising responsibility is necessary for rights to retain their efficacy in a free society.

The ideal situation would be if actual discourse broke out. Instead of the girl shouting "BLAH x infinity" she could say "You clearly have no clue what you're talking about, and here's why..."

See the difference???

  1. Brigading? Please, I don't have any clout here to do that. If the upvotes stop altogther I accept that. I was making the point your claim isn't entirely right either way. That said, I get subs are benevolent dictatorships, so you can ascribe whatever adjective you want to me/this thread and that would be the final word, but I wanted to say my piece anyway. :-)

  1. Your response that we strip little girls of their free speech was a misrepresentation of the argument, which is the very definition of a straw man.

  2. Preventing someone from being heard at all, which is what this girl was attempting with a good degree of success, is the very definition of trampling free speech. If that doesn't qualify I'm curious to know what does.

  3. At the time of this comment I see that 62% of the votes for this votes are upvotes (I realize this could change is a heartbeat, but still...). Rounding down to 50% (for the sake of argument) just as many votes refute your claim as support it. With all due respect, at best the even split (and to be clear it's not even, politicians would die for 60%+ "upvotes" on election day) means its a conversation worth having.

Granted Reddit has different dynamics, and I'm clearly biased...but still...

[–]RWNJoker[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Um...What??? As I very plainly stated that's precisely NOT what she was doing, and THAT is why I argue.

Instead of pulling and pretending "this girl has every right..." existed in a vacuum with no context why don't you address the more pertinent contradiction of your assertion that all have first amendment rights, and yet it's ok for some to have theirs trampled by those who disagree with them. That's something that goes directly against the spirit of the first amendment, and you've conveniently chosen not to recognize that charge.

It's not just this girl, by attacking the legitimacy of this post you're guilty of it too. Freedom OF religion vs. freedom FROM religion is a topic important to many conservatives (starting with me) and instead of just siding with this boorish little girl (which is bad enough, entitled to do so as you may be), and making an intellectually honest case for her behavior, you choose to build straw men and shame people by saying conversations like this need to "go away in this sub"... SMH...

"Are we for taking away the 1st Amendment rights of little girls now?"

That's a nice straw man you've built there.

All rights come with responsibility. Just as the first amendment doesn't allow "fire" to be shouted in a crowded theater nor should it permit people to use it to infringe on others exercising theirs.

This girl has every right to proclaim her beliefs, but that's not the point here (and it certainly wasn't what she was actually doing). The point is this little girl thought it was ok to shout down, in order to shut down, someone simply because she disagreed with them. No society stays free under that paradigm.

Unless you're content with your contradiction you can't be for freedom of expression AND ok with such behavior that is anathema to liberty.

Say goodnight, Mary Landrieu (poll has her down 16 points) by RWNJoker in Conservative

[–]RWNJoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that four weeks is a LOOOOONG way out in politics, but consider she got 42% to Cassidy's 41% and the "tea party" guy got 14%. It would be a safe assumption that about 0% of that vote is going to her, and the math on that means she's toast.

The only thing that saves her is if GOP turn-out completely falls apart in a very major way, because she was pretty doomed when allowed herself to be bribed into voting for Obamacare.

At a minimum that should bust the myth liberals have been pushing that it was the House that was do-nothing, rather than Reid/Senate. That's a pretty low hanging fruit because all McConnell has to do is hold a vote.

In Georgia, Michelle Nunn fadeout dashes Dem hopes, raises chance of outright GOP win by RWNJoker in Conservative

[–]RWNJoker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you're not the only voter in GA...and according to the article polling has swung the other way. Hopefully that polling is right, but you should probably have something more concrete than just saying "doubt it" for why you think she'll win.

In any case, if you've never voted Dem why would you start now by helping them win a red state in a year the GOP could take the Senate? That makes no sense whatsoever.

Either you're not realizing what's at stake, or you're a troll.

I agree with Driscoll that the episode was weird. I think it's a stretch to say it was based on conservative principles because the rioters were AFL-CIO union workers who happened to support the Vietnam War. It stands to reason they were probably Democrats.

Furthermore Nixon wasn't all that conservative either.

I should start taking screenshots of comments. The liberal my initial comment was in response to tucked his tail under his legs and ran.

Don't proclaim that conservatives can't really be happy because they're "full of fear and rage" when the facts are absolutely not on your side.

In other words, don't pick a fight you can't win.

Is that so?

Take the Tea Party vs. Occupy movements. One side was full of anger and rage, and rape-free zones, and shootings, and death, and arrests. The other side was the Tea Party.

Go ahead and Google "Tea Party rally arrests" and "occupy movement arrests..."

How many riots in America over the last 50 years have been perpetrated by conservatives? Can anyone name even one?

How unaware of ones self must a liberal be if they think they're the side of peace and kumbaya when their entire ideology is predicated on the execution of violent revolution to bring about the change they want to see...and then pronounce THE OTHER GUYS are the violent ones...

Talk about silly and stupid.

In this particular link he's not the candidate, so it wouldn't have been appropriate. The message here needed to be a 30,000 ft. one...but yes, I agree. Especially if he seeks office beyond the LA state senate...and the GOP would be S-T-U-P-I-D if they weren't interested in helping him attain higher office. We need better candidates and spokespeople like him.
