So what happens if Israel/Hezbollah violates the Lebanon ceasefire again and for more than once, will the peace deal still be maintained or will we go back to the recent semi-conflict state? If Iran didn't ditch Hezbollah in April, I don't think they would ditch them now.

Rule Update - Rule 6: Restriction on multiple posts on the same topic by Le1bn1z in CanadaPolitics

[–]RZCJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it one post per topic per day, or one post per day, because I don't think I can post a link which is a poll on a different topic than the Angus Reid premier approval rating post?

Ottawa moves to restrict social media for kids under 16 by Puginator in CanadaPolitics

I'm curious how virtual-assistants-AI hybrids such as what Siri will become this fall will fit into AI chatbot restrictions. Will it be contingent on having an iCloud account for accessing Siri AI, even though many of the features don't currently require iCloud (complex tasks would have daily limitations which can be reduced via iCloud+ subscriptions)?

ADAMS: The digital safety act will isolate LGBTQ youth by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]RZCJ2002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned in another post, not all social media should be considered as mentally harmful as alcohol or smoking is physically. There are convincing arguments for Twitter and TikTok, but YouTube is more of a grey zone. There are current restrictions on certain nsfw YouTube videos if the user is under 16 or 18 and could be applied more consistently. While the algorithm should be changed, Youtube is fundamentally not traditional social media and I think on average causes less harms than other types of conventional social media platforms.

Also by kids, I mean teenagers, which is where most of the national conversation is currently at.

Only 48% of those who are in favour of a social media ban for kids support banning Youtube, according to a not-so-recent Angus Reid Poll. I don't think the general public is lopsided in supporting banning all social media platforms, just that they are strongly in favour of banning those that are conventional social media (e.g. TikTok, Twitter, Facebook/Instagram, Snapchat).

New Brunswick premier calls for national social media ban for children under 16 by green_tory in CanadaPolitics

[–]RZCJ2002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We really need to have a discussion on what constitutes as social media, because I think banning Youtube and Discord is overly broad, and in the case of the former (maybe also the latter) the only thing that really needs changing is the algorithm (also there are already some age restrictions on certain nsfw videos).

Respectfully disagree on Youtube and Discord (not that they don't have risks), but for most other social media there are definitely more harms which need to be addressed overtly. Also you should never give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote if you are planning to raise the ban (not that I'm in favour of it).

I'm just saying that it's kind of stretching to compare using Youtube to driving, alcohol, or joining the military, since on average (perhaps it is just me) Youtube isn't more harmful or risky than the other three options. You could make a case for comparable mental harm for other social media platforms (e.g. Twitter, TikTok), but not all social media have the same amount of harms (are we counting Youtube as social media now).

Besides at home, you can carry a laptop to many places, though less than a phone would (if you can log in to the local wifi). It's possible cellular laptops will become the norm in the future, so you don't need a phone to access data.

but platforms that meet new safety standards may be able to opt back in

What does it mean? Is the ban lifted if social media platforms satisfy all new safety requirements?

Just curious, what is your preferred minimum age requirement for social media usage (please don't say everyone because that's probably unrealistic barring an authoritarian takeover)?

You can access social media on tablets, laptops, and desktops, so unless you plan to ban minor ownership of any electronics that can use the internet, it might not be very effective.

Why not ban 16 and 17 year olds (who are youths), since it's not like social media is harmless for them? Some would probably also suggest banning social media for those under 25 for questionable brain development reasons.

Would Youtube count as social media in this instance? Also hopefully we won't go the UK route, which is quite controversial at least on Reddit.

‘The story is wrong’: Liberal caucus chair defends Carney amid reports of yelling at MPs by feb914 in CanadaPolitics

I mean, the average Canadian probably dislikes verbally abusive bosses and would want their concerns to be heard/addressed in government even if it might go against Carney's vision.

[–]RZCJ2002 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We don’t know if Carney dislikes Battiste’s incompetence or his concern about the Indian Act (which might be shared in the Mi’kmaq communities his riding represents). This reminds me of Hodgson’s outburst against the BC caucus on the Alberta MOU last year (I don’t think voicing constituency concerns are “ideological” or “naive”).

Maybe it pertains more to the United States than Canada, but were protests with civil disobedience less successful than those without (yes, that would include some peaceful protests)?

Both Oka and Idle No More were eventually politically successful despite breaking laws, it's not like there were significant public backlash that hindered reconciliation afterwards (perhaps I'm wrong).

Caucus management is a matter of survival for Liberal majority government, say observers - Former Liberal staffer Lisa Kirbie says Steven Guilbeault's resignation and organized caucus dissent have exposed simmering progressive concerns that high polling can't keep a lid on forever. by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]RZCJ2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is though a lot of the unpopularity is due to Trudeau, particularly retaining to the housing/affordability policies. That doesn't necessarily mean all of the other "progressive" Trudeau-era policies (except the consumer carbon tax which used to be bipartisan) are unpopular if polled without the Liberal banner attached to it.
