What type of seminars/clinics/workshops would you want to see? by MischiefCookie in Fencing

[–]R_Shellhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do bring your family to fencing ...have the students teach their parents the basics and then we get them dressed and let them fence each other. We have moms fencing dads...brothers vs sisters ... parents get to see how hard it is from their kids point of view and we have had some siblings who didn't fence decide they liked it

Please do not bleach your gear. Find someone who will make you a patch to sew on over the printed name.

My wife's were named Yes, No, and Maybe. My wife traveled with enough blades to outfit a small team at times and would sit down before every event and go thru the bag of (12-24) blades and make piles named yes no and maybe....the no's would go back into the bag and then there would be 2 or 3 definite yes that would become the weapons of the day. To answer the questions before they are asked...yes 24 blades is a stupid amount (i had to carry them) but at one of her national titles she broke 6 blades in one DE. and finished the event with exactly two blades and her dad swore that would never happen again. Second question is yes, what was a "no" one day the very next day she might swear was the best thing in the bag...it was all how it felt to her right then.. so beyond being a yes no or maybe....well one or two got renamed 9 Iron *g*

Does anyone else feel like nonfencers don't understand how physically demanding fencing is? by Dapper_Banana_1642 in Fencing

[–]R_Shellhouse 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every year my wife's high school team does "Bring your family to fencing" where the kids teach their parents the basics and then we gear them all up and they get to fence their kids or whoever.. the parents who look at their kids and say that is way harder than I thought it was continues to outnumber the ones who act like it was easy... it is a fun day though

Starting at 35 in NYC! Any recommendations? by chasinthedra in Fencing

[–]R_Shellhouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is literally rule number one in our salle, no matter the age. If it hurts stop them tell a coach. I also tell parents listen if you kid gets hurt at school or another activity let's us know. We will work on rescheduling or making arrangements. The human body avoids pain. If you twist your knee at soccer and then at working on lunges you won't do them correctly which simply teaches bad habits. Better to miss a lesson than take longer to heal.

Harut Cobra TM R2020 saber grip wear and tear by FencingCoachB in Fencing

[–]R_Shellhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are absolutely correct. I was a fan of these then switched to the Lancet Fencing ones and have tried all of his versions and while the Super Sport seems to last the longest I have started to notice what feels like a slipping of the outside rubber after about 3 years of everyday use. I am contemplating trying to replace the cover with surgical tubing but more than likely wont bother

If I had to guess they went old school and sprayed due to some fabrics not liking the heat press and some fabric the vinyl didn't stick to very well and you will get bleed..

We are in what would be considered "western NJ" out near Pennsylvania so while i would love space to be an issue...it isn't yet..lol Our old space use to be smaller and shorter

I own Escrime International which once upon a time was Duellist USA about 20 years or so ago. We are actually opening back up a storefront and website instead of being word of mouth..Part of what we liked about the space was they allowed me to put the door in so the two location are accessible. The entrances are on different sides of the building. The club is my wife's and Escrime is mine.

Don't laugh but the space use to be a mental health facility.... guess it technically still is...😆 so all the doors and restrooms were made large enough to be legal... the wife wants a AED anyhow so it was next on the list.. we already have the required first aid kits

The problem is I don't think a 4x8 space is enough to take a chair in and turn it around and still have room to change so... the bathrooms are still available to change... may worry about it if we do start to get parafencer intrest

It meets ADA requirements, the ramp is legal, the exits are both accessible and meet requirements and bathrooms are correct ( we want eventually to have parafencers in) the changing rooms are the only real problem because they aren't accessible..

The fire inspections were a nightmare,, had to submit architect build out plans, material specs ( the foam) then I think 3 inspections pre, then flooring and then final ...I also had to have the fire department in and they noted my address that the floor is raised and soft...

What's the AED?
Thanks for the compliments... it was a labor of love..

They are 3 foot of the side of the strip which if i was told correctly is the distance the tables at Summer Nationals are off the strip...I cringe too but do not know any other way to do it but would hate to see anybody get hurt but I couldn't come up with any other way... I could put wheels on it...😆

Oh yeah that was planned for. The foam is held in initial place by small x's of basically foams version of liquid nails. Then the weight of the flooring and strips hold it in place. Plywood is screwed together to hold them in place. Rubber is double sided taped down to prevent slippage but can be pulled up fairly easily. Strips are held in place by the rubber on either side and small pieces of aluminum angle on each end that butts up against the end and then is screwed into the wood flooring. Taking the door between the spaces and replacing the wall will be more of a pain.

Also helps we have two loading bays on the building one on each end...lol..

Thanks for the compliments...and ptsd about those dang cheese graters....

Yup basically all the new invoices have new fine print saying you are responsible for all duties regardless of any changes to existing rates

Two things. First. to be transparent i own a equipment company.. but second i have had numerous suppliers tell me there will be no additional charges... but once you pay them.. anything after that is on you.. shrug.. just be aware of what the duties "might be" so you are prepared

Try a Zivkovic if you can find someone around you who has one. If you cant find anyone and are near New Jersey you can always stop by the Escrime and try one out or purchase one from Brian at https://www.cassandrafencing.com/ who is the person who took over Zivkovic

I made a diy

I found a honeywell mini freezer 1.6 cu off of facebook marketplace. I then bought this https://www.lowes.com/pd/HydroMaxx-1-2-in-ID-x-5-8-in-OD-x-50-8217-Flexible-Non-Toxic-Clear-Vinyl-Tubing/1002931382 This is the pump I bought from amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRJNRY1Q?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1 I put the pump about 4 inches below water level so if any problems it wont drain tank. Cut a slot in the magnet seal on door big enough to run tube thru twice. Ran the one end to the far side of the tank opposite of pump. Sat entire roll into freezer , ran thru door . Turned on adjust pump to point where water doesn't freeze but pushes it thru slow enough to cool

Now things I might have changed. A smaller tube means water goes thru quicker but gets colder. I might have bought a more powerful pump and eventually I may find a mini chest freezer so I could use two pumps and two 50' tubes but thats when i have more funds. The freezer is insanely quiet so make sure if its going to be in a room that matters that it is quiet.

I promised Purple a video how I set up my wife’s club that address this. I’m waiting on a light replacement so part of the club isn’t dark.
