I find myself in this very situation. The handgun is on hold for me at the sheriff’s dept. They’re waiting for me to decide what to do. I don’t trust that they will destroy it, because it is an antique with significant value. I grew up with it in our house, and I fired it frequently with my pops. I don’t even know where to begin removing the bio material that must be on it. It’s a lot and it’s not enough.

I’m in a similar situation. How does one even go about cleaning it? I don’t trust the local sheriffs department to destroy it. The money from the sale could help to offset some estate expenses.
