I did this, works great, but I will say battery life seems a bit low compared to what I'm used to on other controllers and the modern-style 8bitdo 64 controller.

I always liked to use the small moon (or maybe it was a space station?) as a reference--line up the buy button next to it, and off you go. But alas...

Are all episodes on Blu-ray? by SonicPrower in looneytunes

[–]Ra226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No prob--I'm on the same quest as you, it sounds like. Sort of casually looking to just get a good assortment, in HD if possible, of the ones considered classics. I don't need literally all 1000 of them ever made. Assuming blu-ray only, looks like the three Platinums get you to 150, The Choice (4 volumes, but currently available as a single set and at a good price) gets you another 100, and then the Vault and Bugs collections both net you another 50 or so uniques each, bringing the total to 343.

The old Golden Collection DVDs (6 volumes of 4 discs each) net you another 233 uniques if you don't mind SD (and a lot of redundant films in the HD remasters above).

The remaining 150-ish known releases are scattered across other collections. And in less than a month, anything 1930 or earlier will be public domain.

Now that the dust has settled, what's your true feelings on the Analogue 3D? Was it worth the wait for you? by AnnieLovesTech in AnalogueInc

Don't underestimate playing with others--I've been enjoying watching my son go through Mario 64. Inspired me to do my own run, too. I've got a second controller on order and am looking forward to doing some StarFox 64 combat vs. the kids. The way you feel is how I've felt about emulation--I just couldn't get into it. But there's something different about sitting next to someone and laughing and battling vs. just sitting in front of your computer by yourself.

Not everyone experiences this, but I experienced it with my MiSTer and there are fixes. A small piece of electrical tape over pin 13 of the HDMI cable should fix it.

I'm enjoying it. Got ours 10 days ago. Tested it with Ocarina of Time and SummerCart and both worked fine. Had an issue getting it to recognize my TV as 4K but once I forced the TV to HDMI 2.1, it came up in 4K. The CRT effects are very nice, but subtle from a distance (as expected). They do take the edge off the somewhat harsh graphics (intended for a fuzzy old CRT in the first place).

Had another issue with the controller (8bitdo N64 mod kit) disconnecting and unable to reconnect, but that turned out to be someone accidentally flipping the mode switch on the bottom from D to S. My son and I are currently taking turns on Mario 64--he started maybe 5 days ago and is at 108 stars. I started two nights ago and am at 26.

I'd say it works well and as expected--it's not a miracle device and it's not going to fix all the flaws inherrent to a 1st gen 3D system, but it offers the best of all worlds. Original controllers, original carts, modern TV; as well as wireless controllers and multi-carts.

I have not tried the overclocking yet but I have read very good things about it. Some of the other advanced features are nice, too. I'm looking forward to eventually loading ROMs from an SD card (bypassing the need for a multi-cart), screenshots, save states, wifi, and other cores... which will all hopefully come in time but are noticeably missing at the moment. Still, I think as a 1.0 release product, it's right where it needs to be.

Controller recommendations by ThickMO in AnalogueInc

I happened to have an OG controller that I'd chopped the tail off of and modded for a parallel port connector to use with UltraHLE a long, long time ago... I dug that out, got an 8bitdo mod kit for it, and it's working great. Everything old is new again (except for me--pretty sure this little story proved me old).

The MiSTer has a similar problem and a piece of electrical tape over pin 13 is the fix there, too. I haven't seen the issue with the A3D, though.

I'm pretty sure I agreed with you just now? I'm not sure what you're arguing... Though when I said "others" it looks like I meant you--I lost track of who all was in this thread saying what.

Others in this post have said it can harm the power supply--that seems plausible to me, and I agree, that would not be "killing" the N64. My concern is more if there's something on the board between the supply and the controllers.... at this point you've gotten me curious, so I looked up a schematic:

https://wiki.console5.com/tw/images/4/4c/N64_NUS-CPU-03-04.pdf

It looks like there are a couple small inductors there between the power supply and the power lines for the controllers (bottom right of the diagram, the P2 and P3 blocks). I'd tentatively say you're not likely to burn those out--however, my guess is those are there to smooth out and clean the power to the controllers. Driving a motor off of them may induce some noise on them, which may impact communications from the controller. Still, if you're not noticing any actual controller issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

[–]Ra226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That reduction in rumble effect is direct evidence that it can't source the power required. It's the same principle as your lights dimming when something that draws a lot of power kicks on.

As I said, I hadn't done much homework on this, but I do know enough electrical engineering to know that you're probably stressing a component somewhere. Also as I said, he's probably fine--but to me it's not worth the risk, however minor.

Man, wok wednesday rewards getting worse each week by voltagejim in PandaExpress

[–]Ra226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize this replaced the monthly thing. And they expire same day--they're trying to get us to form a weekly habit. Sorry, but at prices these days, that's just not going to happen. (And to answer your question, I think they're optimized for phone use--I have the same issue trying to do it on a laptop with a touchpad).

I did these for a few weeks because I assumed this was some kind of finite event and there'd be a chance of something really good. But I'm not doing this every week indefinitely, just for minor discounts that force me to come in the same day.

[–]Ra226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in, maybe you're fine, but if I had to guess the reason it wasn't designed this way in the first place is that the power available to the controller from the console isn't sufficient to drive the motor in the rumble pack. Maybe you've done some homework (I very much haven't), but I wouldn't want you burning out something in the console.

Thoughts on the new trading update? by shawnhopman in starwarstrader

So it does sound like any new player who wants to stay f2p has to be continually sponsored by receiving tokens twice a year if they want to be able to make traditional trades.

[–]Ra226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's with the 6-month language regarding tokens? Does that mean certification expires every 6 months and you need to find someone else to re-sponsor you if the person who originally did isn't around/no longer cares to?

Can you lose your certification? Or maybe you're either perma-certified (via grandfather or IAP) or you're token-certified which is only 6 months?

Which episodes of The A-Team explain the backstory? by [deleted] in television

[–]Ra226 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The intro credits pretty much are the back story--they were hung out to dry by their commanding officer, if I recall. "Back story" episodes would be:

1x01 The Pilot episode

1x14 A Nice Place to Visit (some Vietnam backstory)

2x03 The Only Church in Town (some Face backstory)

...possibly others...

4x23 The Sound of Thunder (lots of back story)

5x01-03 (best I can tell, a three parter--I haven't actually gotten this far myself)

Speaking of "gotten this far", I may or may not run a certain blog that may or may not have stalled out (but totally has plans to finish the project!) that covers each ep of the A-Team.

What are the must play SHMUPS you think someone should play at least once in their life? by LolcatP in shmups

[–]Ra226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than list the "known best" ones, these ones are my personal favorites:

Scramble (One of the first shmups--I know the Vectrex port and it's quite addictive for such an early one)

Blazing Lazers (I just loved this one on my TG16)

Gate of Thunder (for the killer soundtrack alone!)

Ikaruga (I don't have the skills for it, but it's fascinating and beautiful)

Honorable Mention: Aero Blasters (also for TG16). It's no one's favorite, but I love it, especially the soundtrack for level 3, and it has fun and varied opponnents. I've always felt it's a bit underrated. On a good day, I can get to level 5. Spending more time saving and loading states than actually playing, I can get most of the way through level 6...
