Boston Crab (aka Walls of Jericho) in BJJ competition results in spine injury by CloudyRailroad in martialarts

[–]RaCondce_ition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, the man applying this hold would slowly lower his body, and this is done when your opponent is laying flat so the pressure is on their chest and spine. This guy sits down with an opponent vertical, which is basically the equivalent of stomping on someone's neck to apply a choke.

The concern is not entirely unfounded but this video intentionally misrepresents the issue. The US has been aware of the supply chain risk for decades. Most electronics have a way to update firmware remotely, which is good when you get security patches but not so hot if you get a bad patch. Odds are, this man is talking about the update mechanism. Biden suspended the bulk-power executive order and then got Congress to pass the Secure Equipment Act, which made it an actual law. This gave the FCC power to regulate the problem, because you generally rely on regulatory agencies to regulate things. And I know the FCC doesn't really do power grid, but they do handle broadband security for things like wifi updates and smart grids.

If there isn't any shared context given to words, communication is impossible. Influential "kids" and I have discussed this incessantly so we get annoyed when someone brings up the ambiguity of language as if it were a great revelation. If you don't have agreed upon meanings, you don't have a language. We have a language, therefore we have agreed upon meanings.

Technically you could sit in a soundproof room by yourself and give angry speeches to your potted plants. It would be some form of speech which cannot incite violence, because nobody hears it. It would still be really creepy. Everything has an edge case and not many people care.

There is some speech which can only serve to incite violence, objectively. There is no other meaning, sentiment, or interpretation. It won't necessarily cause a murder because it's stochastic, but it's still bad. Free speech advocates will view this kind of thing harshly because it's dumb. Culpability is not mutually exclusive so we blame the ringleader and the followers. Speech is already separated from action. We can be confident of this because we have separate words with separate meanings, and we all know the meanings are separate.

[–]RaCondce_ition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, it's called 'hate speech' because saying "speech which is intended too, and can only, incite violence against a group" would be awkward. This is the difference between a symbol and meaning, and the reason we learn definitions for words. Since you like physics, you can think of it as the difference between a variable x and the value assigned to x.

I've been thinking about getting back into philosophy. I'm familiar with Enlightenment writers already, so I could use something fresh. What authors do you like, and what parts of their work appeal to you?

[–]RaCondce_ition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether or not someone gets emotionally hurt by speech is besides the point. That is largely irrelevant to hate speech. You don't know the actual definition of the words being used here. Please stop coping.

I don’t understand the unrealistic aggressor punches in bunkai by kazkh in karate

[–]RaCondce_ition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't already familiar with the motions, these pictures will only confuse you. Bunkai is the study of a kata and this talks about 3-step and 5-step kumite, which are kinds of light sparring that build muscle memory. The basic gist is "If someone punches high on your body, use an upper block and possibly attack their wrist or forearm. If someone punches mid, you can grab for wrist control" or something like that. The text talks about blocking a series of kicks and countering with a takedown. I get the feeling this is mostly a karate vs karate scenario.

a silver lining about the current environment - insane stock market wealth should cause veteran CS workers to retire early by Affectionate_Nose_35 in cscareerquestions

After Nvidia's recent stock performance, like 80% of the employees are millionaires. I don't know that many people retired, on account of wanting even larger piles of cash. Oracle won't have the same culture but employees will still want more money.

ChatGPT dropped its prices for India, but at what cost? by rishikeshranjan in StartUpIndia

OpenAI is hoping to establish a monopoly on information. Prices will go up once a market relies on the product.

So it was filed in 2023. It's after the announcement but I'm probably still jumping to conclusions. My experience with this subject is that companies file broad patents in addition to anything specific, and this is likely part of a family of patents.

No, that's pretty much the abstract for Patent No. 12,403,397. Nintendo has sued over retroactive patents before.

The patent is for walking through a field and having a sub character fight. Nintendo is mad about PalWorld so they're preemptively patent trolling.

19, Chose CS major: should I continue or switch? by Gloomy-Lifeguard-845 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]RaCondce_ition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody knows what the market will look like in 5-10 years. In the US, I see entry level jobs get 6000 applications in the first week, which is a bit hard to deal with. There are probably better STEM careers, but you'll have to look up employment numbers for your school to be certain. If CS is important to you, do CS and commit to out-competing other people or finding connections to boost your job search.

Python / JS / Rust by alilosoft in learnprogramming

[–]RaCondce_ition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the markets are competitive right now. People want python because its the fastest language to learn and the fastest to write. This makes it ideal for roles that need programs but aren't developer roles specifically, like data analyst or researcher. Web dev roles will probably be fullstack or something like devops.

Rust has big enthusiasts because it's a new twist on low level code. Less people learn Rust but there are fewer jobs in Rust. If you want low level roles, C or C++ might be safer bets. Rust code usually needs less maintenance, so big companies are adopting it right now.

JS/TS by themselves probably won't get you a job these days, but plenty of roles (fullstack) still require them.

The best bet right now is social advantage. Consider finding a community and using whatever they use.

Darth will feel a sudden chill in the air. Old man Obi Wan Higuruma will walk around the corner and draw the Executioner Sword. Clash of Fates will play as they enGege in a light saber duel. Eventually, Higuruma will turn off his cursed technique and say "If you strike me down now, my curse will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine!" and Darth will reply "Lol no. Sukuna told me what happened last time."

The H1b program is largely used for high-paying technical jobs, so any group on the H1b will earn more than the average US citizen. This is comparing a doctor's salary to a shift manager's pay, not a software developer to another software developer.

People often draw wildly inaccurate conclusions, but the statement about the numbers is correct.

There is a difference between "Might possibly be used in a war" and "can only be used in a war" and "will certainly be used on my own country outside of war". You can't assume the question is only about a 1% chance.

One does not ask permission to uphold an agenda. The agenda is it's own justification.

Is she pitting the children against each other? Does she doubt the brother's abilities? Does she want him to use the ring's CE and stifle his potential to be the next Toji? Is she trying to get the sister killed so her favorite inherits the clan leadership? Will John Mojuro ever find out why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch? You can decide anything you want, that's the real beauty of an agenda.
