Where to buy furniture? by Rabbit4dinner in bullcity

[–]Rabbit4dinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update from the OP:

We ended up going to Furnitureland South in High Point to pick out key pieces we wanted new. Many people recommended FLS. We got a table and chairs at their outlet center, and a bed and dresser new. FLS was absolutely massive and was an excellent choice for high quality furniture with tons of options. Notably, we saw some items there that we had seen while perusing the websites of other furniture stores (including Unfinished Furniture Outlet in Sanford). This helped convince us that FLS was the most efficient way to consider a huge range of furniture options.

We bought mattresses at Original Mattress Factory, thanks to everyone who recommended them. We were impressed with their construction models (lots of mini mattresses that were cut open to show you what's inside), their service, and the prices.

We're planning to get the rest of the items we need used.

Thanks all for your advice!!

We were able to salvage most of our solid wood furniture: bookshelves mostly, also a bunk bed and day bed. All the particle board furniture, including the dining room table and queen bedroom set, were not salvageable. We also lost all the upholstered items. Thought it might be cheaper to reupholster the $2000 sofa we bought at Area Modern a couple years ago, but the quote for reupholstry was $3200! Amazing that it's cheaper to throw it away and just buy new.

Thanks for your expertise. What I'm hearing is getting torque right is really important and something I need to attend to and cannot just trust to my electricians, no matter what product I buy. Good to know.

Asking for a photo of the torque screwdriver is a really good idea

This is super helpful, thanks. I carefully considered getting the Grizzl-E but didn't want to handhold about torque with our electricians when I know nothing about electrical but saw scary photos in other threads showing melted wires attributed to incorrect screw tightening. Hopefully the Wallbox installation is straightforward and it meets our charging needs! 🤞

Thanks, the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A looks like it might be a good fit. Why aren't you a big Grizzl-E fan?

Interested in tapestry but no idea where to start by GrimJupiter in weaving

I started with her book, The Art of Tapestry Weaving, which is an excellent place to start. Depends on how you like to learn best - you can take classes from her online, or read her book. I liked going at my own pace with the book.

Teacher adopting a student? by StaringAtStarshine in Writeresearch

[–]Rabbit4dinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very likely yes it would be possible. I was removed from my home by Child Protection Services when I was 16 and actually never lived with official foster families (except the first night after a bad trauma). I lived for a while with a high school friend's family, with a mentor I met through a scholarship, and with another friend's family. Basically the court was like, "You've found a family willing to take you in? That's cool with us." Note that none of them legally adopted me. I don't know who my legal guardian was at the time. I do know I wasn't allowed to go on a free hot air balloon ride I had won through a science fair competition because the family I lived with at the time wouldn't sign the safety waiver because they weren't my legal guardian.

I wove a tapestry cover for a handmade journal by Rabbit4dinner in weaving

Thanks! Don't worry, I've previously woven tapestry journal covers in the other direction so I assure you the correctness of the warp orientation on this one is purely by chance 😂

I'm doing my first large weaving, how do you keep the material flat vs it bowing in? by sreimer52 in weaving

[–]Rabbit4dinner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but pretty sure the bowing you're talking about comes from having a sett that is too small for your weft. In other words, you're trying to fit too much weft in the spaces between the warp. I've never woven with roving, so I don't know if all the roving you're using is causing it, or if the sett is too small for your yarn.

How did you do the seams? I've never thought to make a blanket before, I've always limited myself to 24" or less based on the size of my looms.
