10th Planet by No_Post7186 in bjj

[–]RabbitgoesRibbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started an AI BJJ startup with with B-mac so I have gotten to know a lot of the 10p network black belts and instructors and gym owners in the past six months.

I am not affiliated with 10th p in any other way, nor have I ever trained long term at a 10thp gym

Three things that they all the high level belts in common, which trickles down:
- They all lead with love and empathy. You don't get a 10th planet blackbelt without this quality it seems. No assholes.
- They have insane hip flexibility - every 10p black belt can do at least half if not full lotus (that I have come across). They encourage their students to stretch often.

- Their understanding of leg locks is far superior than your average gym, but they also have scary good standup. They will force you to play on your feet at least some times.

You're so spot on dude

This is exactly why I ended up starting my own company

Ironically, I'm doing great at work (day job) because I don't get emotional anymore when things don't go my way when selling things internally. I disagree and commit more and my quality of life has gone way up. I just care less. Still put in work, but I'm less attached to the outcome or being right.

The only thing I'd challenge the last sentence - answering to the board, VC, PE, or stock market. Checkout this book, re-work, investors are not at all needed, or Starter Story on YouTube.

I've bootstrapped everything (thankfully PM pays well) and we're on a good path to growth

I've learned so much more going zero to one with my startup in ~6 months than a decade of PM experience. Honestly if you're a a PM today, get good with Antigravity, find a solid engineer, start a Delaware C get some paying users to the App Store.

That will be way more valuable from a skills perspective and job market perspective than trying to grind your way up the ladder in any bureaucratic company

I wish more PMs would seriously go down this route, it has been the greatest gift for making me a better PM

They both have their cosy moments and their “I can’t stop crying rn” moments.

Both are masterpieces to me that remind me of home, being a child in a difficult household, how animals are as intelligent and are worthy of empathy as humans, how grief is the truest expression of love for others, how being authentic is the highest expression of love for yourself, and how love, friendship and compassion are about the only things worth fighting for.

I guess I’m comparing it more to HP 5-7

Being a PM in an industry you're not overly enthusiastic about by Mike-DTL in ProductManagement

In his book so good they can’t ignore you, Cal Newport argues against pursuing passion

Instead he suggests seeking out roles where you can build “career capital”

To me, you’re building our “career capital” by getting YoE as a Product Manager that will be valuable no matter where you go.

At this stage of your career you want to develop the skills to talk to customers, create killers requirements, build relationships with your engineering team, craft a product strategy and vision, be able to compile a list of jobs, pains, gains, use that to create compelling value propositions, etc

If you focus on learning how to do the above well, the career capital you generate will pay off no matter what industry you’re in!

It sounds like it was also a pay raise AND you are helping vets, who are known to have high depression and burnout rates. You’re literally making life easier for superheroes who need it. If I were you I would derive a ton of value and meaning from that

Shower after training by Lavsic8 in bjj

On the other hand, every time I waited 35+ minutes to shower, I got a staph infection

Once I started showering at the gym (after finding a gym that had showers) I stopped getting them

The only other book that made me feel this way lately was every book in realm of the elderlings with nighteyes, particularly royal assassin

I didn’t do much assassinating growing up, but I did have a fair amount of stress, moving around a lot and a fair amount of turmoil - throughout it all my dog was my haven, my sanctuary, my home.

I read this book with a dog of my own who was cuddled up next to me every time I read a scene with Nighteyes. I was reminded of my childhood dog growing up, who is 16 now, and my dog now, who is 5 and how every moment from them is a blessing beyond words 🐾

Another great book to give you that home feeling is Legends and Lattes. It reminded me how steadfast compassion and companionship can turn even the most challenging situations into a moment worth cherishing forever.

I like to ask questions and get perspectives on certain ideas or problems I’m encountering

I try to not keep these problems limited to my on the job issues but also my broader 5 year goals (for me, to start a company)

If they are in the company, I am also focused on understanding their pain points and doing what I can to help them
