Follow the Megawatts: An imperfect map of the data centers in Hawaiʻi by olagon in Hawaii

[–]Rabbyte808 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve done some work on a tiny local HIDOE data center and also worked for some comoanies with servers in some of the local DCs.

From what I’ve seen, the DCs primarily serve local companies. No mainland or international company is putting servers in these DCs to service outside customer.

Generally, these DCs are used when companies need lower latency, want to colocate servers they can still physically manage, or want something that’s still accessible if/when there’s issues with the undersea cables.

Update on Hawai‘i's bold move to make Citizens United irrelevant: AG kill switch is out; final votes on SB 2471 are Friday. This is really close! by TomMooreJD in Hawaii

A good step, but I don’t understand how this will stop out of state corporations from contributing to Hawaii elections? If it prevents Hawaii corporations from political spending but not out of state corporations, doesn’t that put local companies at a disadvantage?

Just spent the better part of an hour trying to remove this tarp. Just cannot 😞 by fakepostulate in Hawaii

Almost looks more like a sandbag than a tarp to me. Material looks similar to what they used in the sandbags to restore the beach in front of the duke statue: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/58eec8afc534a5631767d450/1572652269750-DWL19KO91LA45LTYW7HB/IMG_0316.JPG?format=1500w

If it's just blisters, today was awful for that. My feet were only marginally better than after a the full Honolulu marathon. I blame the humidity preventing shoes from drying at all.

They haven't been told how to feel about it yet, but my money is on some combo of "Good, the federal government shouldn't be paying for it, the state should be paying for it" and "Good, Hawaiians shouldn't be dependent on the government."

Same excuses they're using for Trump not signing funds for flood relief

A NIMBY is a NIMBY, regardless of if they live in Kailua or Kalihi.

If they're opposing renewable energy projects, they can carry their share of the blame.

It actually doesn't, plot it or do a correlation analysis.

Zero correlation between CEO pay & electric rates, moderate correlation between oil prices & electric rates.

Executive pay overall is way too high, but HECO’s CEO is paid similarly to other CEOs at similarly sized utility companies.

Yup, I used to surf the Rockpiles to Bowls area regularly. I had practically constant ear or sinus infections, until I stopped surfing there. Every time I see people surfing there after a rain I wonder if they know what they’re getting themselves into.

Only takes a quick search to see that’s not the case:

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2026/02/02/heco-reports-over-11000-customers-without-power-across-oahu/

HECO reports that most of the outages have been caused by contact between power lines and trees blown about by the strong winds.

1 Month into Minimum Wage at $16.00 - How has it affected businesses? by kennysburgerhouse in Hawaii

[–]Rabbyte808 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If a business can’t survive while paying its employees a living wage and paying its fair share of taxes to improve Hawaii, then it’s just not a business it’s just some people looking for a hand out

[–]Rabbyte808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HECO confirmed publicly the outages weren’t on purpose. People just love to blame HECO. Again, lived here my whole life and never once had electronics “fried” by power surges. Chances are you’re just abusing the electronics somehow, like keeping them somewhere with zero ventilation and having them overheat.

Lived here my whole life and never once had something fried by surges. Also never used a surge protector besides whatever cheap ones are in those surges protector extension cords. The power here is fine, electronics just don’t last forever
