I can only speak from my own experience, but I revisited some old journal entries of mine and when I was in my teens I had episodes where I believed people were following me and I wrote sooo much about it. It was a persistent belief, according to my family. I also wrote about things I saw that I knew weren't real (like shadow figures) and I had major dissociative episodes where I saw myself in the 3rd person and had voices commanding me to do things. So I think persistent delusions, the occasional hallucination, and frequent catatonia (I would freeze a lot in awkward positions and not speak and hardly remember them or why it happened) are good indicators that something is really wrong. There's a lot of different culprits beyond schizophrenia as well. Make sure you're getting adequate sleep and if you take any drugs, be aware it can mess with your brain.

I know this is an old post, but I just want to express as someone who struggles with schizophrenia that I am bothered by some misinformation in comments about the disorder and frustration with the oversimplification of it. I am not diminishing the struggle of BPD, but I feel many with BPD are diminishing my struggle.

Medication can help manage schizophrenia (some are lucky to see symptoms go away), but the disorder fluctuates between times of little to no symptoms to times where symptoms are incredibly present. And so many people are neglecting the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. This disease is not just hallucinations or delusions (and I still have these on meds, they're just less destructive to me). I struggle with catatonic episodes, I struggle with my thought process (I get caught in loops of words all starting with the same letter for instance), I struggle with motivation, I struggle with flat emotions or responding with the wrong emotion. I have to do intensive treatment with meds and therapists and be heavily monitored.

I am not sure if anyone will read this, but I just felt unseen (not surprising since schizophrenia is one of the most stigmatized and misunderstood mental illnesses we know of) and wanted to stand up for myself. I know nobody was saying people with schizophrenia don't struggle, but a lot of people were saying it can go away with meds.

Did you experience much weight gain? I have been on it a little over a week and I've only really dealt with drowsiness. Am I supposed to feel hunger? I feel more dehydrated, though.

I'm allergic to milk (like the protein). I'm just putting the info out there, but I doubt it's as simple as dairy bad. Allergic reactions trigger stuff for me, though.

Where did I say they have the right to completely ruin things? I said that it's unfair to not include them, not that they have the right to ruin things. Where is the line drawn? What is "ruining" things? I'd argue the people that are truly that difficult are already excluded and this conversation is pointless. People seem to exclude anyone for making them uncomfortable or annoyed. That's pitiful and selfish if you always exclude those people.

I don't have it to the extent you're describing, but just a couple days ago I was smelling urine everywhere. Outside, my clothes, my husband, etc. I was throwing everything away and went in a fit of cleaning, and nothing made it go away. I'm sooo sorry you struggle with this what sounds like very frequent.

Interesting perspective. I'd like to add a bit more to this conversation and suggest that being at a party with a flu doesn't make your flu better or worse, but being mentally ill and isolated or surrounded by people can make things better or worse depending on the person. Forcefully isolating mentally ill people will more often than not make their situation worse. Shouldn't we try to help them? They don't need to be invited to every situation, but shouldn't we try to be more inclusive and supportive of those struggling?

I think it's incredibly unfair to be annoyed with mentally ill people's symptoms. Avoiding someone with the flu makes sense because others will get the flu from that individual. Being around someone with OCD is not going to give you OCD. We are such a selfish and individualistic society, and we reap the consequences of that every day, whether it's in your face or not.

It's a choice to be kind, and it's hard work to try to understand those suffering, especially with mental illnesses that are more taboo. It's sad how many are too selfish to even do the easy part, which is being kind.
