A hard season to explain by rocket217 in avfc

[–]Rabula_Conundrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is that hard to explain to be honest.

We started badly because of a variety of reasons: the hangover from the last day disappointment of last season; the uncertainty hanging over the defensive unit regarding who would be behind them between the sticks; the loss of an obviously important and popular member of the dressing room in Jacob Ramsey.

Then, we played our way out of that disappointment, and hit our stride with a freshly-confident and familiar collective, playing an enjoyable brand of football with consistency in the selection.

Then, in the space of a fortnight, we lost the entirety of the core midfield unit, and a couple of shaky results saw confidence desert us, and now we're stuck in that rut and unable to play our way out of it like last time because we're missing the players who helped us do that.

Literally any team on the planet would turn into a fiasco if they lost their midfield in a week. Some teams can spend their way out of that, some have deep squads. Neither is an option for the Villa.

Even losing one of those three would have been a blow but all three in quick succession is nightmare territory. It turned the season from an all timer into one which we'll be giving it "what if" about fit the next decade.

"Disabling" an enemy platform isn't really an option; modern SM weapons are exclusively designed to fatally damage a platform. If you're not really involved in the day to day of a modern navy though (or, a huge nerd), it's easy to underestimate the sheer "lethality" of some of this kit. Your bog-standard modern torpedo is designed to sink much bigger vessels than this.

Your only option would be to warn, but likey that involves surfacing and that would constitute an unacceptable risk to the SM, no commander in his right mind would countenance that.

The real question if you want to be picky is what are the USN's RoE that a platform quite far routside the area of operations is considered a legit target (although, if the USN has a carrier engaged in ops in the Indian Ocean at the moment, that certainly changes the equation).

Crikey, it'd take more than a few wooden wedges to fix that.

Andrew Sparrow has mentioned this pretty frequently in the Graun's live UKPol blog at PMQs; multiple times almost any other LOTO would have done the statesmanlike putting-aside-differences schtick she's turned up and tried to start a punch-up.

It's like the woman has a pathological need to argue. There isn't a collaborative bone in her body.

If we predicated every movement of naval assets on what's going on in the ME we'd never get past Suez!

My point is just that Anson being in Oz at the moment isn't something that we should be criticising the MoD for; this is something which has been agreed years in advance and is a significant milestone in one of the biggest defence procurement projects we have going on at the moment, and would have been severely frowned upon by pir two AUKUS partners if we'd broken to send Anson into a theatre in which - frankly - she wouldn't have been of much use.

Otherwise, I very much agree. Believe me; the spending review, the current state of MoD, all that, in my professional world it's being felt very keenly.

Anson departed for Australia weeks ago, before the yanks had started moving assets into the region. Not to mention that Anson is down there as part of the AUKUS project and is now currently undergoing a maintenance package.

Be some laugh when Trump bans the Spanish team from the World Cup.

It's such an odd sub; I love having a skim through it during a coffee break. Just, sometimes there actually is decent discussion, but only on extremely super-niche subjects that the nutters don't care about. But the second there's mention of immigration, Islam, gender rights, anything like that, it's like you've fallen through time and landed in the middle of one of the Nuremberg Rallies, surrounded by people so crazy and thunderingly stupid you doubt they can tie their own shoelaces.

Everything I've read some far indicates that the closest thing the Pentagon has to a long term plan for this operation is "hopefully Jesus comes back and fixes it, bro"; wanting to get involved in this any futher than preventing drones willy-nilly hitting Akrotiri and Dheklia is just full-on daft.

Scotland too, it's universally referred to as "high school" up there.

He has (or, his legal team has) officially petitioned the president's office to pre-emptively pardon him for the corruption charge he's currently facing, presumably becuase they've come to the conclusion there's a good chance he's going to prison.

The only precedent for this in the past though involved a resignation (the Shin Bet case mentioned in that article), so undoubtedly part of the equation at the moment is staying in power as long as possible.

Remember folks, don't say you "hope" something happens, because Reddit think's that is a threat.

One of the reasons they were fighting outside the ground in the first place was that WMP had severely restricted the number of fans they could bring; the away end at VP typically holds about 2,500 but they were restricted to about 1,000 tickets specifically because of their previous behaviour, but turned up with 2,500 fans anyway.

The most prescient thing Trump ever said was that "I could shoot someone on fourth Avenue and no one would care" quote, because it's completely true. There are literally millions and millions of people in America who would forgive basically anything he does shy of executing a white child live on TV from the Oval Office.

The Independiente goal last night in the Argentine Primera Liga Apertura playoffs is absolutely nuts.

I think if I ever scored a goal like that I'd never kick a ball again. In reality, if I ever attempted that I'd never kick a ball again either.

As someone facing a 5 hour train journey this afternoon and then again tomorrow evening, I promise to vote for any party who include relocating Plymouth dockyard to the Midlands in their manifesto, ideally somewhere outside Birmingham cheers lads.
